COACHES MR. ANDREW MR. HOYE MR. JARRETT MR. BRANT MR. SUTTON FOOTBALL Although they wound up the season with a record of four wins and six losses, this year's edition of the Fletcher Senators played every game to the last whistle and provided some exciting moments for us all. The Fletcher Senators were off to a good start with nineteen seniors on the team and everyone out to win. Most of the team had seen plenty of action. The opening game of the season was against the Gainesville eleven on Cromer-Shuler Field. Trailing 7-0 at the end of the half, the Senators rallied to defeat Gainesville 13-7. Joe Moore and Bill Johnson scored the touchdowns. Fletcher played Robert E. Lee next in the Gator Bowl. Lee scored in the first period to lead 12-0. Roddy Anderson recovered a Lee fumble early in the third quarter which led to Fletcher's only score made by John Patterson on a quarterback sneak. Final score, 19-6. After playing Lee, the Senators went up to play Fernandina at Fernandina. Favored going into the game, Coach Brant's lads completely outplayed Fernandina in almost every category offensively but the Pirates capitalized on one bad move by Fletcher to gain a 6-0 first half lead and then went on to win 12-0. The following game was against Du Pont. The Senators were not 'Aclicking' that night and Du Pont won 20-0. It was quite an upset as Fletcher was expected to win. Bolles was next on the schedule. At the half Fletcher was ahead 20-13 and the final score was Fletcher 33-Bolles 13. Jerry Bowers was the outstanding player scoring four touchdowns. The Live Oak game was played there. The Senators were improved but could not stop Swanne's aeriel attack. Fletcher was defeated 32-18. Ocala managed to beat Fletcher 13-7 on their field. The Senators scored first but failed to follow up. Fletcher's outstanding defensive players were Donald Brown, Mike Scanlan, and Steve Powell. The Palatka game was played here and Fletcher put on a good show. Behind 13-0 going into the second half, the Senators pulled out ahead to win 14-13 by a sensational punt return by Jerry Bowers who ran 94 yards after receiving a hand off from Bobby Taylor. Ed McCormick, Charles Thompson, and Larry Clark were outstanding linemen. The Bishop Kenny game went off well for the Senators as they downed the Crusaders 20312 for the first time in four years. The Senators were behind 12-0 at the half and it looked as though the usual Kenny jinx would hold good for one more year. However, a determined Senator squad returned to action in the second half and completely dominated the remainder of the contest. The Fletcher Homecoming, against Ketterlinus, was the last game of the season and the Senators were up against an undefeated team. It was a hard fought game all the way through, with Fletcher driving right down to the lastg but the Senators could not push over the needed touchdown. SWIMMING Last year's swimming teams posted excellent performances in state, conference, and regular season competition. The boys, coached by Mr. Sutton, won the NEC cham- pionship, were runners up in the state meet, and went undefeated in eleven dual meets. The girls tutored by Mrs. Clay. were edged out in the competition for the state title, and won four out of six dual meets. Many members of the swimming team performed well in the Junior Olympics and prospects are high for the coming aquatic seasons.
