16 Looking back and making tracks; 1987-88 is a year of change for DHS and the world DHS' school year began with a new principal, Mr. Bo Whitelock, in the office, and five new teachers on the staff: Cecil O'dell, Don Smith, Rebecca Word, Sandy Baca, and Dan Kennedy. The high school underwent major renovation over the summer, with new carpet and lockers in the upstairs hallway, and remodeled and refurbished business and home-ec. classrooms. The biggest news in Greenlee County was the opening of a new solvent extraction- electrowinning plant by copper giant Phelps-Dodge Corporation in Morenci. Retailers Wal-Mart and K-Mart opened new stores in the Gila Valley during the year, as debate on the Mount Graham telescope project continued to rage. Dominating Arizona news was Governor Evan Mecham, who was impeached by the state Senate over financial irregularities relating to his campaign. Secretary of State Rose Mofford ascended to the office of governor, the first woman in Arizona history to hold that office. In national politics, candidates announced for the 1988 Presidential election, including former Arizona governor Bruce Babbitt, who was also one of the first to retire from the race. The Middle East continued to be a focal point for violence and turmoil in the world, but some progress was made in Soviet-U.S. relations leading to a summit in Moscow. Sports fans realized a dream when the NFL St. Louis Cardinals moved to Phoenix and became the Phoenix Cardinals. The University of Arizona Wildcat basketball team made it to the NCAA Final Four, and the Arizona State Sun Devils returned once again to the College World Series. In entertainment news, The Cosby Show was the top- rated TV program, and Crocodile Dundee and Rambo II were two of the box-office smashes for the year. The best music group was U-2 and the best single cut was Club Nouveau's Lean on Me . Bon Jovi produced the best album, Slippery When Wet . Bon Jovi's video of the same name was also rated best rock video.
