KATS party down at Fiesta '87 Fiesta '87 was one of the busier Homecomings in recent memory, with five days filled with activities. The traditional dress-up days included: Punk rock, Inside-out, 50's, Clown Day, and Red and Gray Pride Day. Participation was slow at first but picked up as the week progressed. Other activities included: Monday- sack races, dance contest, potato push, and skittle-bob; Tuesday- tug-o-war, watermelon eating, pie-eating, and extra-point kicking; Wednesday-none; Thursday- gym decoration, bonfire, powder-puff football game; Friday-Homecoming game against the Benson Bobcats, featuring at half-time the crowning of Homecoming Royalty and the parade of class floats. Class spirit points were awarded throughout the week, and competition was heated. The Juniors and Sophomores also proved victorious in the annual Powder-puff game, by the score of 12-0 over the Seniors and Freshmen. The overall results in the Homecoming spirit competition were Seniors first, followed closely by the Sophomores, then Freshmen and Juniors. Businesses in town were invited to participate in Fiesta '87, and the student council officers judged their efforts. Plaques were awarded to: First place— The Hot Dog House; Second— Valley National Bank; and Third— The Crystal Mirror. The Wildkats lost the Homecoming finale, the football game, to the Bobcats in a close, hard-fought contest. The Kats fell behind early, but came back in the second half to give Benson a game, finally losing 23-19. Crowned at halftime were the Homecoming Royalty: King, Eric Dick; Queen, Tammy Ryther; Prince, Thomas Montoya; and Princess, Suzanne Reynolds. Job search ’88 DHS students had the opportunity to meet with representatives of twenty-five different career areas for this year's Career Day, sponsored by Mr. Rodriguez and the Counseling office. Career Day is an annual event designed to give students first-hand exposure to some of the things they are interested in, from college or trade school to the military or business and the professions. These students are anxious to be all they can be. Dr Ron Keith explains some of the programs available at EAC. Sponsored by Mrs. Arnett and Mrs. Lunt, the contest was used to promote students' interest in science, math, and engineering technology. The contestants were required to load a raw egg into a package of their design measuring no more than five inches on each side. Eleven eager DHS students participated in the Egg Drop Contest and one in the Bridge Building Contest. They drew an enthusiastic crowd of Duncan High School students as spectators. With all eyes on Mr. Payne, the honorary egg-smasher and bridge-buster, the eggs were dropped from increasing heights up to 24 feet. Most of the eggs survived the fall on the lawn from the highest point of Mr. Clarigde's fork-lift. So Mr. Payne had to relocate himself to the top of the gym complex. From there he dropped and then threw the packages with great force onto the concrete sidewalk, until all were broken. Henry Ratliff's egg was the last to survive the torture. He had his egg rolled in plastic bubble-wrap and he enclosed the bundle in a five inch box. Jimmy Bell's egg came in second with Aletha Word's coming in third. All contestants did a good job in protecting their egg. They were packed in everything from lamb's wool to sawdust and foam rubber. Vern Brown had fhe only entry in the Bridge Building Contest. His model of ice cream sticks withheld the maximum of 205 pounds before being crushed. Henry Ratliff and his prize-winning egg 8 Mr. Downs piles on the weights to test Vern's bridge. Duncan's Junior class went to great extremes to present the Seniors with a classy dance set. with big city lights and a dazzling, modern motif of couples dancing. The Junior class selected the theme Honestly , which is also a very popular song by Stryper, a Christian rock group. Red, black, and white streamers formed a canopy over the dancers, and confetti littered the dance floor. The Prom King and Queen attentendents were: Thomas Montoya, Roger Rodriguez, Frank Leuenberg, Kevin Chavez, Kathy Goyer, Eileen Bejarano, Teresa Sanchez, and Lyanna Pena. The excitement peaked when Lyanna Pena and Roger Rodriguez were crowned the 1988 Prom Royalty. A short program featured the reading of Junior class wills and Senior class prophecies, and refreshments of cake and punch were served. Of eleven candidates, the top three finishers were from Duncan: Kathy Goyer was crowned Miss Greenlee County for 1988, with Kim Tyler first runner-up and Lyanna Pena second runner-up. In addition, Tammy Ryther was chosen by the other contestants as Miss Congeniality, and Annie Morgan received the non-finalist award in the talent portion of the pageant. Kathy, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Goyer. demonstrated her talent with a vocal presentation. She will represent Greenlee County during 1988 and will be a contestant in the Miss Arizona Pageant held during the summer in Phoenix. DHS welcomes three exchange students Duncan High School welcomed three exchange students for the 1987-88 school year. Begonia Verge from Catalonia. Spain, enrolled in September and attended for the full year. Begonia, a sixteen-year-old junior, stayed with the Tom Goyer family. She became interested in attending school in the United States when her best friend came to California as an exchange student Begonia studied English in school in Spain and spent two summers studying in England. She described Duncan as a big change for her, coming from a large city to a small town, but she said the people are very friendly. Besides her schoolwork. she participated in several extra-curricular activities including volleyball. Flags, and Street Jazz.” Frederique (Vicki) Leflot. a nineteen- year-old senior, came to DHS second semester Her home is in Belgium, and her hosts here were the Joe Pena family. She said teenagers here are warmer and more open than young people in Belgium. She also said that school here is easier, with more opportunity to take elective courses. Vicki enjoys geography and art. and lists reading and drawing as her favorite extra-curricular activities. She plans to pursue a career in fashion design Frank Leuenberg hails from Berlin. West Germany. The seventeen-year-old senior enrolled for the second semester and stayed with the Danny Rapier family. Like most Europeans. Frank is fluent in many languages, speaking French and English in addition to his native German. He adapted well to life in small-town U.S.A , claiming many friends in Duncan His favorite subjects were history and biology, his favorite pasttime: reading, sight-seeing, and sports. Frank proved to be a valuable asset to the tennis team, as he placed fourth in districts and advanced to State. Although he still has courses to take in secondary school back home, Frank marched with the Class of '88 in graduation exercises. Under the direction of Mr. Wally Foote, students performed The Arabian Knight and Why Teachers Go Nuts. Besides providing entertainment, the plays helped Seniors raise money for their Senior trip. A third play, The Imaginary Invalid , was scheduled but could not be performed due to technical problems. is 16 Looking back and making tracks; 1987-88 is a year of change for DHS and the world DHS' school year began with a new principal, Mr. Bo Whitelock, in the office, and five new teachers on the staff: Cecil O'dell, Don Smith, Rebecca Word, Sandy Baca, and Dan Kennedy. The high school underwent major renovation over the summer, with new carpet and lockers in the upstairs hallway, and remodeled and refurbished business and home-ec. classrooms. The biggest news in Greenlee County was the opening of a new solvent extraction- electrowinning plant by copper giant Phelps-Dodge Corporation in Morenci. Retailers Wal-Mart and K-Mart opened new stores in the Gila Valley during the year, as debate on the Mount Graham telescope project continued to rage. Dominating Arizona news was Governor Evan Mecham, who was impeached by the state Senate over financial irregularities relating to his campaign. Secretary of State Rose Mofford ascended to the office of governor, the first woman in Arizona history to hold that office. In national politics, candidates announced for the 1988 Presidential election, including former Arizona governor Bruce Babbitt, who was also one of the first to retire from the race. The Middle East continued to be a focal point for violence and turmoil in the world, but some progress was made in Soviet-U.S. relations leading to a summit in Moscow. Sports fans realized a dream when the NFL St. Louis Cardinals moved to Phoenix and became the Phoenix Cardinals. The University of Arizona Wildcat basketball team made it to the NCAA Final Four, and the Arizona State Sun Devils returned once again to the College World Series. In entertainment news, The Cosby Show was the top- rated TV program, and Crocodile Dundee and Rambo II were two of the box-office smashes for the year. The best music group was U-2 and the best single cut was Club Nouveau's Lean on Me . Bon Jovi produced the best album, Slippery When Wet . Bon Jovi's video of the same name was also rated best rock video. ‘Well. I heard it through the grapevine, says this Arizona aisin. an art project by Michael Webb. Is Diane Gray mopping floors? With Coach Bo Whitelock at the helm, the Lady Killer Kats were edged out of a state play-off berth in the District Tournament. The team was one game from state after defeating Tombstone. The Kats traveled to Willcox for the match and were defeated in two games, 15-9, 15-6. Altogether, the Kats accumulated the best record for Duncan in the last ten years. Small but Mighty Kats claw to a 3-7 season Thomas Montoya lugs the ball for some tough yards against the Thatcher Eagles The 1987-88 Wildkat Varsity football season got underway in August. The team had to practice hard on and off the field, with a new weight-training program put together by new Wildkat mentor. Coach Dan Kennedy. Even though the Kats had twelve lettermen returning to the team, they still had a rough season. The Kats ended with a 3-7 over-all record, to put them in fourth place in the conference. The Kats started the season by losing their first game against Lordsburg, 33-0. Things didn't look up as the Kats also ended up losing their next 3 games. In the fifth game, the Kats opened up conference play wifh a victory over Tombstone. The next two weeks the Kats suffered two more losses, but regained their pride in the following game by stomping on Pima, 12-8, in a conference game. Their celebration was cut short by Willcox the next week. The Kats ended the season with a 12-8 win over Morenci. They ended up with a 7-15 over-all record and were 2-5 in conference play. Though the Kats placed last in the B-East Conference, there were some bright spots during the season. Having only two lettermen returning from last year, the Kats started the season with three loses before they chalked up their first win against Reserve. The Kats also tallied a one-point win over class A powerhouse Safford, in a game that kept the Duncan fans on the edge of their seats. The Kats got on the ball halfway through the season, winning five games with only one loss between. After those wins the team had a difficult time, even with high scorers Joey Bejarano and Kevin Chavez doing their best to lead the Kats to victory. Duncan was defeated in the first round of the District Tournament by Thatcher, who ended up State runner-up. The J.V. Hoop Kats' season never got off the ground, as they wound up with a 0-17 record. Even with Ryan Rapier and Shane McCurdy leading the team, they still weren't able to pull out any victories. But with Coach Chano Talavera pushing them to do their best, the J.V. Kats never gave up. They kept pounding the hardwood, hoping to pull out a victory. The J.V. Kats never found a victory but are preparing for a good season next year. Joey Bejarano pushes the ball downcourt. Returning seniors Kathy Goyer and Eileen Bejarano lead the Kats to a winning season with a record of 15-8 overall. The team averaged 44 points per game with an average of 43 rebounds. Dan Kennedy was the head coach and his assistant was Curtis Brown. The first dual meet of the season was with Morenci, where the Mat Kats recorded the first wrestling win in school history. Duncan hosted their first meet against the Thatcher Eagles, which the Kats also won. Wrestlers also participated in various inviational tournaments, such as the Trojan Victory Classic at Clifton. The only Kat wrestler to advance to the State Meet was Daniel Aguinaga, although Roger Rodriguez and Todd Brown just missed state berths. According to Coach Kennedy, the future of Duncan wrestling looks bright, as many wrestlers will be returning next year. But Coach also admitted that seniors like Roger Rodriguez, Todd Brown, Cecilio Garcia, Cody Baber, and Cully Stearns will be hard to replace. ,r v re Todd Brown and Roger Rodriguez demonstrate as Coach Kennedy explains the posi- tions and basic moves at Duncan's first ever wrestling match. The duo of Annette Madrigal and Kim Stacy represented Duncan at the State Meet, winning third place. Duncan can look forward to continued success in varsity play, as the Boys and Girls J.V. Team compiled records of 9-0 and 7-1, respectively. Overall, Coaches Sam Gardner, Becky Madrigal, and Don Smith rated the season as exceptionally good. Girls Varsity, back: Jenny Romero. This year's team was an experienced one, with eleven varsity players returning and only two new faces on the squad. The J.V. squad had tough season but did manage a victory over Morenci. Under the direction of Mr. Mitchel Lindemann, 38 members worked hard to have a successful and joyful year. The band took part in three fundraisers, many concerts, they marched in parades and performed at several games. The band jammed at home football games and marched at EAC's Homecoming 100th birthday Celebration. The band also demonstrated its playing ability at the Christmas and Spring Concerts. The band played for the Baccalaureate and Graduation ceremonies. The band also gave students an opportunity to travel. This year the students journeyed to Animas, EAC, and Tucson to perform. The DHS Jazz Band consisted of 17 members. This group, also under the direction of Mr. Lindemann, did some traveling of its own. The Jazz Band took part in a competition at Western New Mexico University and played a concert at Clifton High School. The group also participated in the dedication of the new gazebo at the town park and played two concerts at the elementary school, in addition to the Christmas and Spring Concerts. 73 Varsity Cheers, back: Shawna Brown. They began preparing for sports and raising money for new uniforms by washing windows. The girls, under the leadership of Diane Brown, worked hard to perfect their routines for the fall sports season. In February, the squad traveled to Mesa to compete in the Arizona State High School Cheerleading Tournament. The DHS crew won First Place in competitions with other A, B, and C schools. The Cheers sponsored a successful Morp and also conducted a cheerleading clinic at the elementary school, in addition to cheering for all the basketball games. Above. Mrs. Diane Brown. The girls worked hard to raise money by staging car washes and cake raffles in order to purchase new uniforms and flags that matched their shirts. The group performed at half- time shows and received an Excellent'' rating at the EAC Band Day on October 3. Other activities included marching in the Fiesta de los Vaqueros Parade in Tucson and doing a routine with the Cheerleaders. When Kim Lunt became unable to continue as Flag sponsor. Candy Herrera stepped in to assume sponsorship of the group. Many of the group members were also able to participate in a troupe called Street Jazz sponsored by Mrs. Lunt. Advanced members were: Jeanna Gamblin, Tammy Ryther, Lyanna Pena, Jerry Rapier, Rick Johns, and Begonia Verge. Beginning group members included: Alicia Bencomo, Lori Butler, April Bellamy, Aletha Word, Stephanie Willis, Joanna Ratliff, and Lena Baca.
