Duncan In Memoriam It is to Sarah Crumbley and Delyce Santee that we dedicate the 1985 Wildkat. Both girls died in a tragic car accident in December. Sarah was a junior and Delyce was a senior at Duncan High. Both were extensively involved in school and extracurricular activities. Sarah was at the top of her class scholastically, and participated in basketball, volleyball, and track. She was also a cheerleader, and was active in band, FFA, FBLA, and NHS. Delyce was also an outstanding student and was on the cheerleading, basketball, and track squads with Sarah. Delyce also participated in choir, FBLA, and NHS. Sarah and Delyce were inseperable friends in life, and became inseperable in death. A scholarship fund in their names has been established at Duncan High School, called the Santee-Crumbley Leadership Fund. Each year the fund will aid a college-bound student who best demonstrates the overall excellence these girls exemplified. They touched the lives of so many. May their memory never die! The Kats came in second behind co-conference winners Benson and Morenci. The Kats started the season with two non-conference games against two tough New Mexico teams. The Kats put up a strong fight but fell to both Animas and Lordsburg. The first conference game was with Tombstone. Duncan looked strong in a 30-0 win. The Kats then went up against the rival Thatcher Eagles. It was a tough game with Duncan coming out on top, 12-6. Willcox came around next and the Kats were really fired up, whomping the Rick pushes for yards as Robert watches to help. 38 Kats on a gang tackle. Cowboys 31-0. The Clifton Trojans rolled around next and provided the upset of the year, beating the Kats 12-6. This knocked Duncan into second place in conference. The next game was a battle but the Duncan Wildkats fell to Morenci 12-0. After the two losses the kats had to depend on other teams losing in order to go to state, but this did not happen. After an open date, the Kats entertained an always tough, non- conference opponent. Colonial Juarez, Mexico. The Kats won 6- 0, but were really sore after the hard-hitting game. The last game of the season was against the conference- leading, undefeated Benson Bobcats. The Kats were really ready for this game and handed the Bobcats a 12-8 loss. The Wildkats ended their season with a 4-2 conference record, just missing a play-off berth. Eight players made All- Conference. On the First Team were Pat Sexton, Rick Weathers, Wade Sexton, and Robert Bejarano. Second Team honors went to Gregg Lunt, Mark Moore, Junior Bejarano, and Harvey Sotelo. Justin Nichols, Benny Rodriguez, and Richard Herrera were selected Honorable Mention. Picked for All-State were Rick Weathers, Pat Sexton, and Mark Moore. These three young men also made the Arizona Football Magazine First Team. Pat Sexton was chosen to play in the North- South All-Star Game. Duncan 8 Opponent 10 7 Animas- 14 30 0 12 . . . . Kats had a rough season, struggling to a record of 0-8, but the young Kats played tough every game. They lost to no opponent by more than a touchdown, and with the experience gained, they hope to run those losses into wins for next year. Underclassmen who plan to make their presence knpwn next year: Back, Harvey So- telo, Mark Moore, Justin Nichols, Victor Rodriguez, Randy Norton, Perry C con, Junior Bejarano. The squad's 0-6 conference record did not give them good placement in the B- East divisional tournaments, in which they played Clifton in the first round and lost 9-15, 2-15. The team is losing three players due to graduation, but have strong upperclassmen coming up. They hope to have a winning season next year. Paulette attempts a spike against Benson. In pre-season they were ranked fourth in state Class-B. As the season progressed they moved to a number-one ranking, which they held for seven weeks. They finished the season ranked second in conference and also in state. The Kats took a 3-2 record into the Christmas Tournament. In their first game of the Tourney the Kats beat Class-A Showlow by 14 points, 83-69. They lost their second game to Safford High, the eventual tourney winner and Class-A State Champ, by a score of 70- 60. The third game of the tournament the Kats defeated Thatcher by 27 points, 67-40. Duncan finished third in the tournament. Donald Crockett and Don leans into a fast break. Pat Sexton were selected for All- Tourney Team. The Kats finished the remainder of the season with a 10-1 record. At the District Tournament Duncan beat Willcox in the first round. They lost the second game to Morenci in overtime, which kept them from going to state. Duncan loaded the All-Conference Team with three players on the first team: Pat Sexton, Donald Crockett, and Stuart McClay. Four players were chosen for honorable mention: Curtis Peeler, Kenny Barlow, Ricardo Gonzales, and Andy Elmer. Donald Crockett also made First Team All-State and was selected to play in the North-South All-Star Game. Donald and Gregg Lunt were chosen as the captains or the Courier KFM Scholastic Team, and Coach Sagnimeni was chosen Honorable Mention Coach of the Year by the Courier KFM. The girls basketball team started out with a bang, winning their first non-conference game by one point in over-time against the Lsrdsburg Mavericks. A car accident took two of the starters, Delyce Santee and Sarah Crumbley. But the team didn't give up, they strived to win. Their goal was to make it to state. Although the team didn't make it to state their season was not a disaster. Against their rival the Morenci Wildcats, state champions of 84-85, they lost by six points at home and by three points away. All other games Clayed by the Lady Kats were lost y only ten points or less. Their final over-all season record was 4-13. Kathy gets plenty of arc on this shot. 50 J.V. This one's up for grabs. 51 Baseball The Kat Diamond Crew welcomed new coach Mike Johnson, a ballplayer in college and a former member of the San Diego Padres farm system. Coach Johnson and the team had high hopes for a winning season, but this was not to be. The Kats finished 4-13-1, but they were in almost every game they lost, losing two games by only one run, and four games by two runs. This was an improvement on last year's record, but such things as having to use the grade school field after the high school field was flooded, and lack of J.V. squad, hampered efforts to establish a winning tradition in baseball at Duncan. Bright spots included the pitching of Harvey Sotelo and the hitting of Gregg Lunt, both juniors. Harvey was named to the All Conference Team, and Gregg led Greenlee County with a .478 batting average. Gregg and Junior Bejarano were also selected Honorable Mention All-Conference. The girls ended up with 8 wins and 4 losses. The tennis boys took first in Districts and also in Regionals, with Donald Crockett being first in singles and Bobby Holder and Travis Merrell taking first in doubles. The tennis girls ranked third in Districts, Paulette Segraves and Gerlene Jones pulling it through in doubles. They did not place in the state finals. With the new format of the State tennis final, now including A, B, and C, schools, Duncan did not dominate the tournament as they have in past years. They started off as the marching band, entertaining the crowd with exciting half-time shows. They attended Band-Day competitions at EAC and WNMU and played at the State Fair. At Christmas and again in the Spring they put on concerts and as usual, they were successes. The band sold jewelry this year to raise funds for their annual trip at the end of the year. This was a new fund raising activity and went very well with the students and members of the community. New uniforms are being purchased for the band. Now we'll not only have a great- sounding band, but a great- looking band as well! The Band marches in place in parade formation. Concert Band at Spring Concert performance. Mr. Castleton leads the Choir in reher- sal. In its second year at D.H.S., the Jazz Band had a very successful year. In November they attended the Jazz Band Festival at WNMU. There was a lot of tough competition, but the band came through and ranked high. In February they attended another festival, this time at NAU. There were bands from all over the state, and even some from out-of-state. The band put on a great performance and received a 2 rating. They played at both concerts and in May, sponsored a dance to raise money for their end-of-the- year trip. The Jazz Band has added a lot of class to the D.H.S. music program. It has given pep to our school and offered a great chance for talented students to show off their abilities. April seemed to be their busiest month of all. Their first big event was the EAC field day. The Duncan FHA Clud did very well, with eight members bringing home awards. In microwave cooking, Debbie Gray and Sue Ann Felts received first place. Lori Sexton, Kara Wagley, and Jennie Salazar received second. In the cooking competition, Pam Mahan received second, Donna Lott third, and Vicky Gutierrez fourth. The Duncan Women's Club sponsored a fashion show in which the FHA members and clothing students modeled clothes they had made themselves. This was a great chance for the girls to show off their talent with a sewing machine. Later in April the Club went to the State Convention in Tempe. This is one of the highlights of the year for members around the state. Duncan members agreed it was a neat experience and they had a great time. Special recognition goes to Victoria Gutierrez. The chapter sponsored a booth at the Greenlee County Fair to promote FBLA. In October, members attended the Officer Training and Leadership Conference held at Arizona State University. Among the activities were training sessions and workshops. The Western Regional Conference was held in November. Eleven members traveled to the conference, which was held at the Double Tree Inn in Tucson. While there, the group also visited Old Tucson. Members sold chocolate Statue of Liberty candy in February to help raise money for the Statue of Liberty renovation. The Winter Regional Conference was also held that month; representing Duncan were thirteen members and two advisors. They brought home fourth place in the poster competition and fifth in the name tag competition. The EAC Skills Day was held on April tenth, with several members doing very well. Also in April the group traveled to Tucson for their State Career Leadership Conference, coming home with three trophies. 66 FBLA members: Donald Crockett, Sherri Brown, Shauna Rapier, Dale Quinones, Gerlene Jones, Shauna Jones, Tiffany Melton, Kathy Galvin, Heide Germaine, Samantha Nelson, Barbara McCain, Ricky Johns, Kara Wagley, Lori Phelps, Marcus Ridgway, Kim Tyler, Jaime Richins, and Cindi Rapier. ___________________________ ____________________________________________________________ FFA First row: Travis Merrell, Steven Hatch, Mark Moore, Pat Sexton, Clyde McBride, JoLynn Felkins, Debbie French. Ph o tography Med-S tart Duncan's first ever foreign exchange student was Juan Salinas, a freshman from Valencia, Spain. Juan stayed with the Dean Lunt family, and took classes similar to those taken by many entering freshmen. As expected, he had no trouble with Spanish; he also excelled in math, and at the end of the year, by all accounts, he was much more comfortable speaking English than when he arrived. Juan played on the tennis team, and continued to pursue his interest in photography by taking photo, earning a certificate for outstanding achievement. Varsity Cheerleaders Varsity Squad: Gerlene Jones, Becky Ratliff, Becky Henderson, Hollie Williams, Sherri Brown, Suzanne Bejarano, The Cheerleaders started working hard early last summer to prepare for the 1984-85 sports season. They held bake sales to earn money for camp at EAC and ASU. Camp turned out to be a successful event for the Cheers. They learned a lot of new cheers, chants, stunts and dance routines which helped them back the Kats and entertain the crowd. Both squads received ribbons for their hard work and performance. The Varsity, however, received the highest honors given a squad at camp. They earned a spirit stick for their pep, pride, and enthusiasm. They were given the Award of Excellence plaque for coming in first runner-up in another competition. The highest honor given, the spirit megaphone, was also given to Duncan. This award was voted on by every squad attending camp. The cheerleaders' spirit didn't stop at camp. They carried it through football, volleyball and basketball seasons and had a great time supporting the Wildkats. The squad showed their award-winning form during both football and basketball games. J. V. Cheerleaders ACTIVITIES Horn ecoming Wet weather and a change in policy limited most of this year's Homecoming activities to the end of the week. The only Dress-up Day was Friday, when everyone wore red and gray. Thursday was Hall Decorating and that night was the Powder- Puff Game. Friday afternoon the traditional class competitions were held, such as pyramid-building, pie- eating, tug-of-war, obstacle course, and spirit yell. The Seniors won the competition, with the Juniors coming in second. Sophomores third, and Freshmen a close last. The Wildkats put their unbeaten conference record on the line against a fired-up Clifton team, and lost, which spoiled their chance for a playoff spot. Ricardo Gonzalez and Paulette Segraves were crowned King and Queen during halftime of the game. The Freshmen demonstrate the proper way to do the Dying Cockroach . This is a backwards Prom: the girls ask the guys, provide transportation, and pay the cost of the dance and pictures. For Morp week activities, on Tuesday, the girls sent official invitations to their dates; Wednesday, a carnation; Thursday, they carried the boy's books; Friday bought lunch; and the dance was held on Saturday. Kathy Goyer was voted Morp Queen, and Roger Rodriquez was voted Morp King. They were both presented with a toilet brush and a tin foil crown. Trash cans served as their thrones. The decorations for the dance consisted of pink and white toilet paper, and hearts made out of construction paper. The music was provided by Magic”. Grand March ............Concert Band THE YEAR REVIEW The 1984-85 school year held many changes for Duncan and DHS students. The Greenlee County Fair was on Sept. 27, 28, and 29, bringing with it the first annual Mud Bog Races. The deaths of Delyce Santee and Sarah Crumbley in early December hit the school and community with a hard blow. In memory of the two girls a scholarship fund was set up, called the Santee-Crumbley Leadership Fund . Money for the fund came from many sources, including an exhibition basketball game sponsored by the DHS Student Council, pitting a local team called the M and M's against the Harlem Travelers basketball team. On Arbor Day, trees were planted on the front lawn of the High School, dedicated to the memories of Sarah and Delyce. The Gila River delivered its annual flood in late December. Many homes and farms were affected, as were the football and baseball fields and the tennis courts. In sports, DHS suffered several upsets. The Wildkat football team missed a playoff spot by inches, losing a critical game to Clifton and winding up second in conference. The Kat basketball team missed the playoffs by an even narrower margin, losing to Morenci in overtime in the District Tournament, even though they had beaten the Wildcats twice during regular season. Tennis also proved to be something of a disappointment, as Duncan players performed well in Districts but did not place at State, due to the restructuring of the State Meet to include classes A, B, and C. Graduation went smoothly and the ceremony was fairly typical until Marisa Bencomo recited an original poem she had written about Delyce. It was a moving tribute, and when Sherri Brown dedicated the song Laura to Delyce, class members and many people in the audience were visibly touched. On the national scene, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space, and Ronald Reagan was re-elected to a second term. 4 IN This year the students at D.H.S. voted for their favorite movie, movie actor, actress, musical group, male singer, and female singer. Beverly Hills Cop was voted favorite movie. Eddie Murphy stars with Lisa Eilbacher in tnis somewhat outrageous story about a street-smart member of the Detroit police force who journeys into the high class sections of Beverly Hills to track down the killer of an old friend. Eddie Murphy was voted favorite actor. Eddie started out on Saturday Night Live in 1980, and grew to be quite successful. But since then, he's made an even bigger name for himself in movies such as 48 hours, Trading Places, Best Defense, and his most recent success, Beverly Hills Cop . Although she's away attending school at Princeton and hasn't been seen much lately, Brooke Shields was voted favorite actress. Brooke has gained popularity doing various commercials and acting in such movies as mercials and acting in such movies as Blue Lagoon, Endless Love, Sahara, and her most recent, her first television movie, Wet Gold . Prince And The Revolution got the vote for favorite musical group. Prince had a hit with his album 1999 but was even more successful with his movie Purple Rain and the soundtrack album from that movie. Madonna ended up being the favorite female singer. Although her first album, Madonna, was a hit, featuring songs such as Borderline and Lucky Star, her newest album, Like a Virgin, should be even more so. It contains the title song, plus the songs Material Girl and Angel . Madonna also sings in the movie Vision Quest and acts in the movie Desperately Seeking Susan. 92 Our Time Curtis and Donald help plant memorial trees for Sarah and Delyce.
