Mrs. Juarez came to work at Duncan High in 1968 and has en- joyed being our custodian for the past sixteen years. Maria is mar- ried to Robert Juarez, who also works for Duncan Schools as a bus driver and guard. Mrs. Juarez has three children, who all graduated from Duncan High. Her twin girls Kathy and Debbie graduated in 1978, and son Bennie graduated in 1981. Mrs. Juarez has helped make Duncan High more enjoyable and healthier for all of us. The Wildkat Staff would also like to recognize Mr. H.T. Clothier’s contribution to the school and community. He retired complete- ly from teaching in 1984, having taught full-time for 43 years and part-time the past 9 years. 3 The Roving Camera Strikes 4 School board members and administrators attend graduation: Ned Merrell. The team began the season in the Safford Invitational. In the first round the Kats faced Miami and lost 8-15, 11-15. The Kats then faced Willcox and Ft. Thomas, winning both games by scores of 14-16, 15-12, 15-9, and 9-15, 15-9, 17-15, to come home with the consolation trophy. The Kats hosted the Tatcher Eagles and defeated them for the first time in four years by scores of 15-8, 15- 9. The Lady Kats finished with a sev- en-win seven-loss record over all, and a three-win three-loss confer- ence record. Dolores Burrola was leading scorer for the season. She served 143 good serves and only 8 had, to total 80 points. She was followed by Jana Lunt with 108 good, and 7 bad, totaling 61 points. In the B-East tournament the team faced the Tombstone Yellowjack- ets. The Kats came home with broken hearts, suffering a loss by scores of 7-15, 15-2, and 13-15. In regular season the Lady'Kats had beaten the Jackets soundly. Dolores Burrola was named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention Team and Kathy Segraves to the All-Conference First Team. 36 Sack row: Manager; Brenda Plank. Gerlene lones, Kathy Segraves. Becky Ratliff, Julie Crum, Coach: Rhonda Sears 38 The J.V. Volleyball team had a five- win and five-loss record. The team was composed primarily of sopho- mores and freshmen with few upper classmen. The girls had quite an ex- citing season, capping a lot of hard work at practices and during the games. The team worked on basic volleyball skills and toward the end of the season they were developing well, which gives the outlook for next season outstanding. The freshmen team had a seven- loss and two-win record for the sea- son. Even though the team did not have a very long season they got out on the floor and really worked at it. As the girls progressed on their basic skills they became a strong team with a good outlook for next year. Varsity Football Front row: Jason Howard, Robert Bejarano. Jeff Heath. Head Coach Teo Rodriguez The Wildkats boasted thirteen re- turning lettermen on this year’s squad, which ended the season 5-4. The Kats jumped off to a fast start with wins over Lordsburg and Tombstone, against one loss to New Mexico powerhouse Animas. This set the stage for a home game with perennial contender and fierce rival. Thatcher, whom the Kats had not beaten for several years. A fine defensive effort aided the Kats to a well-deserved 14-0 win. The Kats were now ready for the defending State Champion Willcox Cowboys. The experts favored the Duncan squad, but the soggy field and a couple of tough breaks (aka. lucky plays by Willcox) sent the Kats home on the short end of a 14- 0 score. Major motion from the Kat defense Joe Sotelo displays good sportsmanship against Thatcher Even with a forfeit victory over Clif- ton, the demoralized Kats were not playing their best ball against a tough Morenci squad, and they suf- fered a heartbreaking defeat. They bounced back the following week against a scrappy team from Co- Ionia Juarez, Mexico, in an offensive slugfest. 39 With hopes of a playoff berth dashed, the Kats had some lapses, and struggled to a season-ending loss at the hands of the Benson Bobcats. All-Conference selections for the Kats were: First Team — Kevin Bil- lingsley, Brett Brown, Eldon Merrell, Joe Sotelo; Second Team — Art Rodriguez, Jeff Heath, Pat Sexton, Lynn Ratliff; Honorable Mention — Chris Garcia, Jason Howard, Gary Perez. Kats jumped to a strong start with shut-out victories over Benson and Pima. The Kats suf- fered their first and only loss of the season to Morenci, 12-0. The young Kats defeated Thatcher and Cobre, N.M., rounding out their season with a 6-6 tie with Willcox. They outscored their opponents 69- 32, and their 4-1-1 record hopefully signals a strong performance when the team matures to varsity compe- tition. Carlos Garcia goes for the catch. 42 Bottom l_e . The Lady Kats defeated Benson, and lost some close games against strong teams, such as losing by four to Morenci. The girls showed promis- ing streaks, but could not play con- sistently for four quarters. The squad was led by the Segraves sisters, Kathy and Paulette, who were selected to post-season All- Conference teams. The team was led by three juniors, Liz Bejarano, Kellie Gojkovich, and Yvonne Martin. The remainder of the team consisted of four sophomores and three fresh- men. The girls ended the season 0- 10 overall. They came very close to beating Lordsburg, Tombstone, and Willcox, but foul trouble kept them from winning. The girls enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to participating in basketball next year. Front: Cindy Rapier (manager). Kellie Gojko- vich. Evonne Martin. Lacy Nutt. Lori Phelps. The Kats had a rough pre-season start, but got on track once confer- ence play began. The Kats defeated every conference opponent except Thatcher and Morenci, who proved to be the thorn in the side through- out the season. The Wildkats played with pride and teamwork, achieving a third-place District finish behind State Champi- on Thatcher, and new arch-rival Morenci. The Kats’ heartbreaking loss to Morenci in the District Tour- nament ended the season and kept them out of post-season play. Pat Sexton was selected to the Conference First Team, and Honor- able Mention went to Don Crockett and Kenny Barlow. With only three players graduating, the Kats will be the team to beat in '85. Coach Teo Rodriguez. The 1984 varsity baseball team had its share of ups and downs. Coached by Teo Rodriquez and Martin Sagnimeni, the young Kats consisted of only three seniors, a few juniors and mainly sophomores. Inexperience took its toll, as the Kats had one win against 13 losses. Jason Howard’s performance on the diamond was sufficient to gain him a spot on the All-conference second team. Joe Sotelo and Rich- ard Herrera were selected for honor- able mention. The young Kats are regrouping and plan for more success next season. Coaches Sagnimeni and Rodriguez plot strategy. 49 The Kats anxiously watch the progress of their teammates. Richard and Joe wait to bat in the Mor- enci Tournament. Junior strokes one. Tennis Eldon and Donald display their winning form. The Boys Tennis Team, under the coaching of Sam Gardner, boasted an undefeated season record. They dominated all of their opponents and even upended Class A Safford. The Kats continued to show their strength by qualifying five of the six players competing at Districts to go to State. Don Crockett was District Singles Champion, Jeff Rhodes and Travis Merrell placed third in dou- bles by defeating John Merrell and Eldon Merrell, who placed fourth. Next year the Kats will be back strong as ever with Don Crockett, who placed second at State, and Jeff Rhodes and Travis Merrell, who placed fourth in the state meet. The 1984 track team for DHS start- ed with fourteen athletes and fin- ished with eleven. The team showed enormous poten- tial and several of the athletes were consistent in scoring points. To qualify for state, they had to be in the top four places in the given event at district. Although none of the team members met the qualifi- cations, two came close: Delyce Santee in the 800 meters, placing fifth with a time of 2:40.4; and Joe Munoz in the shot put, placing fifth with a throw of 39 feet 10 inches. There are high hopes for next year's track team, as all of these athletes will be returning. Delyce and Susan visit with the competition Front: Joe Munoz. Dale Quinones, Ricardo Gonzales.
