Want to express yourself? Creativity gains momentum in ek rg i five t ,H ,,. V K What is creativity? What makes little kids like to draw or beat the drums or play with ham- mer and saw? The same thing that makes high school students sign for music, art, or crafts. Some chose the tympani, some the woodwinds, some the brass- and behold, the Duncan Wildkat band. Some signed for singing and that meant the choir. The art room almost over- flowed with those who like to draw and paint. Students dis- played their work at the fairg some won ribbons in the state PTA competition and the Scho- lastic M agazines contest. Arts and crafts students ex- perimented with wood, plastics, leather. Even girls learned to use saws, lathe, router, and sander. Results were bowls, candlesticks, tables, belts, purses, collage, decoupage, gift boxes. That was creativity! Leather belts were popular in arts and crafts. Books and instructions were only the starting point in voca- tional classes, whether students read about grasses and then identified themg studied motor manuals, then tore down the motors and re-assembled themg studied wiring charts, then in- stalled wiring systemsg listened to lectures on woods and tools, then used them. Vocational agriculture gave experience in all departments of farm work: plants, animals, farm mechanics. In vocational building trades, the boys began with drawings and ended with model houses and useful items from boxes to gun racks. Auto mechanics was a pleasure for car nutsg it also prepared students for careers and made them good at do-it-yourself money-saving car repairs.
