P- g 1 fl,-gf Duncan High 1973-W -f-gf Q, ' Q Workbooks, notebooks Add practice to commerce, homemaking study Bookkeeping practice sets, business workbooks, and home- making notebooks filled up dur- ing the year as students worked problems to prove and illustrate book principles. Homemaking students studied career education, child care, and home designing, plus the usual cooking and sewing. They en- joyed planning and furnishing dream houses: they learned to read patterns and sew, in foods, they learned calorie input and nu- tritional values. In typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping, Mr. Clothier's young Janes and bucks fol- lowed rules, developed speed, practiced typing letters, index cards, and themes. Bookkeeping students learned to balance home and business budgets. Accuracy was the aim in shorthand for fu- ture secretaries and student note- takers. Workbooks were important in business law and general business. Practice problems cov-insurance, legal rights, traffic laws. Writing checks correctly, budgeting, and '-- A spending wisely were USCfl1l WOI'k. Rug crocheting: S.Shreve watches Y.Walters's nimble tingers. 'Put this with that, What will be the result'7 is math, science problem Dependable probabilities, or what a person can expect from known facts, were the lessons math students learned as they solved problems, and science studentslearnedastheyperformed experiments. In math, many students worked at their own speed, from those who found even general math hard to advanced students who went to trigonometry. In- dividual help from Mr. Merrell supplemented homework and blackboard lectures, Mr. Davis emphasized earth science: geology, oceanography, meteorology, environmental problems. Three students-Dan Carrell, Jeff Poage, Chris Weis- lingfstudied physics, Dan built a weather station on the high school roof. Jeff studied physical science also. Something new was the study of career opportunities in the fields of chemistry and biology, with library research and written reports.
