State law changes Affect school board elections, district financing Changes in state laws were a feature to remember about 1973- l974, according to Supt. Archie Stephens. Because of one new law, there was no school board election in 1973. Now members would be chosen at general elec- tion time every four years. State finance laws were dif- ferent also, one purpose being to reduce district taxes. For the high school, a bond election approved purchase of 28 acres of land running south of High Street approximately from the water tower above the school to the American Legion building. Two new tennis courts were laid near the site ofthe old elementary school, and the auto mechanics department moved out of the vocational trades building into one of the former sixth grade classrooms. With the flood-damaged ele- mentary building now only a memory, the administration be- gan plans for an eight-classroom school across the Gila River from Duncan on land donated by Car- roll, William, and Edwin Dean in honor of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Dean. Like most other school boards, Duncan's worried about the gasoline shortage, and the school installed an extra 1,000 gallon tank for storage ofthe monthly gas allotment. Because of increasing elemen- tary school enrollment, two new portable .classrooms came: and an elementary principal, four new teachers, and six aidesjoined the teaching staff. High school enrollment and teaching staff remained about the same as in 1972-1973. ARCHIE L. STEPHENS FLOYD D. CHAPMAN Superintendent Principal xi -T Supt. Stephens enthusiastically explains blueprint for new building as teaching aide Mrs Jane Monahan, girls' P.E. instructor Mrs. Barbara Stauffer ask questions.
