Year's work Brings projects By spring, the ground was swept bare of traces of the old elementary school. The new tennis courts had been in use for many weeks, but track and base- ball teams still were hoping for better facilities. Easter vacation gave a week's break before students began to concentrate on finishing typing budgets, science reports, clothing or reading contracts. The band and choir's year was almost ended after the festival and concerts. Clubs and classes elected new officersg the FHA and FFA installed their officers and recognized outstanding members. State law changes Affect school board elections, district financing Changes in state laws were a feature to remember about 1973- l974, according to Supt. Archie Stephens. Because of one new law, there was no school board election in 1973. Now members would be chosen at general elec- tion time every four years. State finance laws were dif- ferent also, one purpose being to reduce district taxes. For the high school, a bond election approved purchase of 28 acres of land running south of High Street approximately from the water tower above the school to the American Legion building. Two new tennis courts were laid near the site ofthe old elementary school, and the auto mechanics department moved out of the vocational trades building into one of the former sixth grade classrooms. With the flood-damaged ele- mentary building now only a memory, the administration be- gan plans for an eight-classroom school across the Gila River from Duncan on land donated by Car- roll, William, and Edwin Dean in honor of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Dean. Like most other school boards, Duncan's worried about the gasoline shortage, and the school installed an extra 1,000 gallon tank for storage ofthe monthly gas allotment. Because of increasing elemen- tary school enrollment, two new portable .classrooms came: and an elementary principal, four new teachers, and six aidesjoined the teaching staff. High school enrollment and teaching staff remained about the same as in 1972-1973. ARCHIE L. STEPHENS FLOYD D. CHAPMAN Superintendent Principal xi -T Supt. Students study Ideas of great authors, struggle with grammar J.Nelson uses pocket dictionary to study vocabulary list in English Ill. Ideas in literature to help people understand one anotherg grammar and composition to help them express their own ideas in good language and with logical organization: these were the goals in language classes. Seniors in Mr. Pasco's English IV experimented with new con- cepts of grammar and read great classics of English literature. They dabbled in etymology, using BEOWULF to see how Eng- lish used to be, and uncovering Latin word origins. In English III, Mr. Tellez stressed grammar. They have to learn the basics before they can write or speak well, he said. As he considered listening and speaking to be very important, he required oral book reports and current events regularly. i The sophomores in Miss Esry's English II also studied grammar and read literature. Packing grammar into 65 freshman brains was different from senior class discussions, Mr. Pasco learned. Some- times, he declared, all I could say was 'Help! ' but he and his students enjoyed directed reading, as there students could contract for almost any kind of book, easy or hard, if it was on the approved list fsee Sue Ellen Shreve, page 19, studying lists posted in libraryj. What makes little kids like to draw or beat the drums or play with ham- mer and saw? The same thing that makes high school students sign for music, art, or crafts. Some chose the tympani, some the woodwinds, some the brass- and behold, the Duncan Wildkat band. Some signed for singing and that meant the choir. The art room almost over- flowed with those who like to draw and paint. Students dis- played their work at the fairg some won ribbons in the state PTA competition and the Scho- lastic M agazines contest. Arts and crafts students ex- perimented with wood, plastics, leather. Even girls learned to use saws, lathe, router, and sander. Results were bowls, candlesticks, tables, belts, purses, collage, decoupage, gift boxes. That was creativity! Leather belts were popular in arts and crafts. They won the Spirit Week competition, which included hall decoration com- petition, numerous yell-a-thons, color days, and class attendance at games, all of which meant additional points toward the Spirit Trophy, Five people on the Varsity pom-pon squad were juniors, and three of the four var- sity cheerleaders were also jun- iors. To raise funds to finance the Junior-Senior Prom, the juniors held numerous cake raffles, manned concession stands at football and basketball games, sold ribbons, cleared more mon- ey at the Halloween Carnival than any other class, and raffled offa purple elephant. The high point of the year for the juniors was the Junior-Senior Prom. The Prom was held on May 4th, using Just You and Me for their theme. The Prom was open to the entire high school and their dates. Only time will tell if their efforts to make it the best prom everl' succeeded. ,R f ' is ll sgso j. L t',r . ' if? . The Wildkats proved this to be correct in l973. Many times the Kats outplayed their opponents, but when it looked as though they might win, mistakes would begin to take their toll. Among the returning starters were Larry Crotts, at end: Dan Carrell, tackle: and Rod Lunt, guard. On defense, Crotts played tackle: Lunt, guard: Carrell and Sam Martinez, linebackers. Mike Lunt anchored the defensive backfield. Jim Crotts was main running back: Martinez and Hugh Nichols completed the backfield. Up front were Leonard Nelson, tackle: Troy Nichols, receiver: Leslie Mortensen, split end: and Tim Cox, center. The season began with a home contest with Alchesay, whose three TDs were successful be- cause of two interceptions and a pass. .I.Crotts rushed for 105 yards. Nelson blocked the punt, and R.Lunt picked up the ball and ran it. Duncan played a good game, allowing the Falcons little yardage. At Benson, Carrell ran back the kickoff on the first play, but the Kats never could get it past the 10-yard line or start it mov- ing again. Duncan held the op- ponents scoreless in the first half, but did not stand up to Bensonls big Bobcats. In the second home game, the Kats met undefeated Babo- quivari. Martinez scored a TD on a four-yard run. At Sahuarita, whose enroll- ment qualified it for Class A, though the story was tragic, the JVs got valuable playing time and experience. When the Tombstone Yellow- jackets swarmed onto Packer Field, L.Crotts scored on a 28- yard pass from H.Nichols. Tombstone made its winning TD in the game's last 30 seconds. At Thatcher, the Eagles scored on two first-half touchdowns. Duncan's defense held them scorless during the second half, but the Kats' offense remained sluggish. At Hayden, Duncan played fairly well, said Coach Lindsey but not well enough. The season's end was sad, with a scoreless night for Duncan against the Trojans from Clifton. It wrapped up a series that the Kats hoped to improve on in 1974, though they would lose seniors Carrell, Delbert Gardner, M.Lunt, L.Mortensen, L.Nelson, and T.Nichols. The Kats were runners-up in the B East Conference, and placed second in the Christmas tournament at Eastern Arizona College. Said Coach John Valenzuela, It was a year of key injuries. Otherwise, it would have been a spectacular season. It was a team effort to replace injured starters. Continued Coach V: I expect 1974-1975 to be the Year of the Kats. We look for 17 re- turning juniors and seniors, all seasoned and experienced. The following honors went to individual players: DAN CARRELL: Mr. Hustle Award. Then the girls lost their leading spiker, Karin Mortensen. to a knee injury. With Karin out for five weeks. Brenda Gale moved up from JV. Though Karin returned for the district tournament, Brenda came off the bench to help for the state championship. At District, Duncan defeated Baboquivari in two games. ln the championship round, Kittens started badly, losing the first game to Thatcher, but the sec- ond was all Duncan's, The final game seesawed back and forth till Duncan came out on top. Karin and Sharin Mortensen and Marsha Lunt were named for a second year to the All- District team, and Susan York again made the second. At the state tournament in Apache Junction, Duncan de- feated St. Johns easily to start. Then the Kittens mel B Central's champion, Florence, their tough- est opponent yet, three rounds, but won to move up to the cham- pionship match, where for the fourth time in the season, they defeated Thatcher. Three Duncan girls made All- State: Karin and Sharin and Marsha. There was no all-state second team. Jeanie Clouse was high scorer for both state and district, with 26 points at district, and 38 at state. By the end of 1973, the JVs. undefeated for the third year running, had totaled 45 con- secutive wins. The third team's record for the season was 7-2. Clothier began coaching a boys' tennis team at Duncan High, After 38 more seasons, five additional tennis courts fnow a total of sevenj, and many state and district trophies for both boys' and girls' teams, Mr. Clothier retired, and Dun- can's board of education named the school's newest courts for him. The 1974 teams brought honor to their coach too, capturing top honors for B-C schools at the state tournament. The boys' team were cham- pions, with Stan .lones-Brent A. Lunt winning first in doubles and Steve Smith placing third in singles. The girls tied with Thatcher for first place, Karin Mortensen being first in singles and Sharin Mortensen-Marsha Lunt second in doubles. At the district meet, Stan and Brent were doubles champs, Sharin and Marsha defeated Duncan's Jeanie Clouse-Brenda Gale in doubles, giving Duncan's girls first and second places. Karin, after an 80-game winning stampede, lost the district crown to Thatcher's Diane Palmer, but soon regained her top standing when she defeated Diane at state the next week. At the district meet, said Mr. Clothier, Brenda and Jeanie played outstanding tennis as they disposed of No. 1 teams from St. David and Clifton and defeated Thatcher's top team twice before meeting Sharin and Marsha in the finals. When Stan and Brent took the state crown, it was a repeat for Stan, who had been a doubles winner in 1973. The girls' team had 20 wins for the season, making a total of 107 wins, no losses for the past six years. In Coach Clothier's 39 years of coaching, Duncan teams took 46 first places at state high school tournaments, as well as many wins at district meets. In the nine years from 1966 through 1974, the girls' team won eight state championships and the boys' took three. Boys' doubles were champs five times and boys' singles once. Girls' teams took seven doubles crowns and two singles. Bright and early on May ll, district players gather for last minute instructions from Coach H.T.
