THE WILDKAT 1959 FOREWORD The 1959 WILDK AT has tried to capture the friendly, west- ern spirit of Duncan High. We hope that in years to come this book will bring to us the fun we've known and the friends we've had as clearly as if it were yesterday. Our illustrations are of the marks men have left on the desert. As the teachers and students of Duncan High have left a great mark on our lives, this book pictures something im- portant to us - our school and friends and way of life. DEDICATION Mr. Bruce E. Miller has been with Duncan High School for six years. Comingto teach science and coach football, he was asked in his second year to fill the post of basketball coach, and he did so with the same skill that he had displayed on the gridiron. In 1957 Mr. Miller became our principal. He has continued to coach basketball, and this yearhe has added the teaching of a class in general business to his already busy schedule of school, church, and community activities. Mr. Miller's ready smile, his quick sense of humor, and his fair dealings have wonour affection and respect. We are proud to say that he is part of our school and to dedicate this, our 1959 WILDKAT, to Mr. Miller, our principal, coach, and teacher. BOARD OF EDUCATION Veteran member of the board of education is Mr. W. M. Clark, who has now completed seventeen years of service to Duncan schools. Mr. Alfred Attaway be- came a board member in January, 1958, and during that year he served as clerk Mr. L. Levier Gardner was a member of the board from 1952 through 1958. In 1952, when Duncan schools consolidated, he became superintendent and now oversees the work of twenty-eight teachers and more than 600 pupils. BRUCE MILLER High School Principal ADMINISTRATION Immediate shepherd of the high school, Mr. Bruce E. Miller has been teacher for six years and principal for three. Though finding an enrollment of about 125 under his care in 1956, Mr. Miller this past year has seen the school population swell to almost 175, and nearly 200 are expected to enroll in the fall of 1959. A high honor for Duncan High School was the awarding to it of the University of Arizona’s President's Scholarship Cup, signifying that among all Arizona high schools represented by no fewer than three freshmen and no more than nine, the Duncan graduates at the University had maintained the highest freshman schol- astic average for 1957-1958. These freshmen were Charles, Pat, Judy, and Candido. In the picture at right, Mr. C. Zaner Lesher, special assistant to the president of the University, presented the cup to Judy, who in turn presented it to Principal Bruce Miller for the school. This cup is now a treasured part of the trophy case. It had been won only once before for Duncan High School. VOLLEYBALL The Duncan girls concluded a most successful varsity volleyball season by winning first place in the district tournament in Benson November 22. The girls played the new rules with six players, one hit, and rotation, the games being decided by sets. Although handicapped by small stature, they amply compensated by skillful mastery of the new technique, by teamwork, and by plenty of action. The first team at the tournament included Gerelene, Evelyn, and Deanna, set-up girls, who did a skillful job; Alice Faye, Carolyn, and Floydean, whose clever spiking was evident throughout the season; and six others who pressed the first six for positions: Nedra Lunt, Shirley Richins, Shirley Edgar. Julie Thygerson, Sandra Hatch, and Margaret McEuen. The first team won nineteen of twenty games for the season, including the tourna- ment, and the second team won eighteen games and lost none. We want to assure every farmer in this area - our members and those who aren't - that we're not polishing home-made halos or celebrating with smug belief that we've gone about as far as we can go in this business of providing dependable, low-cost electric service. We want our members to know that we'll continue doing all we can to give them even better service at cost, without profit ... to enlarge our system to meet their fast-growing demands... And we also want to let those farmers who do not yet have electric service know that we don't consider our job completed. Limited only by available materials and sound business operations, we intend to do everything possible to get them service as soon as possible. As a locally-owned, locally-controlled business, we are proud of what we have done in this community area; but we are much more concerned with all that remains undone.
