THE WILDKAT 1956 Published by the Students of DUNCAN HIGH SCHOOL Duncan, Arizona FOREWORD This year marks an event long to be remembered for the advent into Duncan High of the students of Virden High, a school which for many years was a friendly and worthy rival of the Wildkats. Proud to have our New Mexico friends with us, we of the annual staff take as our symbol the crossed arrows of friendship. It is our hope that friendship and good will may be the enduring cement to make the former Eagles and the-Wildkats a better school than either could have been alone, and we hope that the 1956 WILDKAT will be an accurate and pleasing record of this first year when we no longer say— Duncan vs. Virden.” DEDICATION To Mr. H. T. Clothier we wish to dedicate the 1956 WILDKAT. For 26 years Mr. Clothier has given generously of his time, strength, and wisdom to the guidance of Duncan High students. His friendly concern for the progress of each of his students; his skilled and patient training in commerce, art, tennis, volleyball, and in the fine arts of living and working to the best of one’s ability —these have placed him securely in the hearts of all the Wildkats. We see him playing and singing with the Coronadians, sharing his chickenlore with the 4-H and F. F. A., sitting with the town council—and to a real Wildkat we say thank you, Mr. Clothier. We shall never forget you. BOARD OF EDUCATION MR. DOUGLAS BRUBAKER Superintendent ADMINISTRATION Spanish, English. B.A., M.A., University of Arizona. H. T. CLASS HISTORY If you were to look into that kindergarten room way hack in 19-43, you would recognize only twelve members of our present senior class. You would find they are: Lorna Allred, Janice Claridge, Dorothy Cosper, Myron Hanchett, Alice Howell, Arlene Lehman, Alan Lunt, Dean Lunt, Clarence McGrath, Joana Moffett, Ellen Moore and Patsy Tuey. We have advanced, losing members and finding new ones. We found Denton Barney, Sally Hendricks, and Billy Joe Phelps in the first grade, and Shirley Sprouls in the second. Lon Holliday and Bobby Martin were added in the third grade. Our whole fourth year flew by without a soul joining us for good, but we acquired two more members in the fifth grade—Norma Harrington and Jack Rapier. Sixth grade gains were June Elmer, Robert Tellez, Olivia Herrera, and Robert Rodriguez. In the seventh grade, Kenneth Ely hitched onto what was becoming a long and memorable train. Emma Jo Bailey boarded in the eighth grade. We will always remember our last year in grade school be- cause of our wonderful graduation ceremony. Then we were freshmen, green ones, evidently. The sophomores must have decided we weren’t attractive enough for D.H.S., so we were initiated—you know—gunny sacks, garlic, baby bottles, and the like. That year our number was increased by Corene Bohannon, Dwain Gale, and Kent Ellsworth. When we were sophs, we were joined by Ann Day and Norman Yet- man, and ti e did some initiating too! Barbara Steffan and Joan Bradford hopped on when we were juniors. Of course, the highlight of the year was the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Our theme was Three Coins in the Fountain. Our sponsors, Mrs. Van Gundy, Coach Grant, Mr. Lovett and others, were invaluable in the planning and decorating. The evening was a success and something to be remembered for years to come. And now as seniors, we look forward to graduation, only one of the many goals in our lives. With Lupe Bejarano and Jerry Merrell coming from Virden to make our class complete, we number thirty-five, the largest graduating class of good old Duncan High. We are grateful to our grade school principal, Mr. Brubaker, and to our high school principal, Mr. Lovett, and to all the teachers we have had who have made our education possible. We hope we have set a good example for classes that succeed us. Graduation means that many of us will never see each other again. Each person lives his own life. Today we launch . . . when shall we anchor? Compliments of DUNCAN EQUIPMENT CO. Duncan, Arizona SENIOR It is now the year 2050 A.D. Except for a few seniors, the team was composed of mostly sophomores with one junior and one freshman on the starting eleven. What they lacked in experience they made up for in spirit and deter- mination. Varsity letters went to nineteen men: Yetman, Smith, Nelson, Pills Tellez, Ordonez, in the backfield; Gale, Alan Lunt, McGrath, Bohannon, Lloyd Jackson, Tommy Davis, Charles Davis, Robert Tellez, Ely, Steffan, Johnson, Foote, McEuen, Max Lunt, in the line; and the manager, Terrell Jackson and David Yetman. Although we will miss the graduating seniors next year. Coach Grant believes we will be a stronger team because of the year's experience. The Kats lost many close decisions during the year, and their play was generally better than their record indicates. Coach Bruce Miller, a really great coach, had only one returning letterman to work with, but did a fine job with his material. Duncan, ending the season with five wins and seventeen losses, looks forward to next year as five lettermen will return. In the B” East district tournament at Superior, the Kats were eliminated in the third round by their old enemies, the Clifton Trojans. BASKETBALL RETURNING LETTERMEN STANLEY PUGMIRE WAYNE NELSON Stanley and Johnny, juniors; Wayne and Lloyd, sopho- mores; and Jerry, a freshman, will be next year's return- ing lettermen. Alfred Tellez, a sophomore, and Chester Richardson, a freshman, were members of the varsity squad also, although they did not play in enough games to win var- sity letters. LLOYD JACKSON J- V. They won twice each over Animas, Pima, Clifton, Safford, and Willcox, and once each over Eastern Ari- zona and Thatcher. At the district tournament they defeated Clifton in a rousing game and lost again to Thatcher in the finals. Because of the loss of several strong net players from last season's team. Coach Clothier used a number of players in an effort to find an effective spiking combination. Betty Barney did a good job of spiking and blocking; Pat Kirkpatrick became an efficient player at the left net, and Patsy Tuey proved that she could jump, block, and spike with the taller girls. Shirley Sprouls and Dot Cosper played well in the rotator position, while Ellen Moore, Judy Clothier, Jo Lines, and Norma Harrington also did their share. Sandra Winans, freshman, and Lynette Merrell and Lana Points, sophomores, also did well on the net, while Barbara Sprouls and Mary Castrillo earned their varsity D’s” as substitutes for the regular pickup girls. The girls were undefeated as a team throughout the season, and the boys won seven and lost three. Playing for the first time in the new Class ‘B'' East district tournament, Duncan took home the winners' trophy by taking firsts in girls’ and boys’ doubles, and was runner-up in girls’ doubles. Wanda Baber and Judy Clothier, doubles champions, also won first at the state tournament in T ucson, while Cotton Wilson and Bud Cox, district doubles champs, won second. Pat Kirkpatrick and Betty Lou Francese scored an upset in the district tournament when they downed Clifton’s No. one doubles team and won the right to play in the district finals. The boys have engaged in two practice sessions with Clifton, winning both. The girls have an experienced team of ten former letter winners, including two former Virden High School players. They had won two meets from Clifton as the annual was being prepared for publication. Two meets each with the following schools are planned for the spring season: Benson, Bisbee, Willcox, Clifton, and Morenci. Big business is continually trying to spin its web of confusion about our locally-owned rural electric cooperatives, but the web can be swept away by facts. Those who would destroy cooperatives have found the only way is through spreading confusion— linking half truths and innuendo. But they can’t spin their web around those who know that: • The cooperative way, free enterprise at its best, is as American as apple pie and cornbread. Every co-op member has one share and one vote • Locally-owned and locally-controlled non-profit rural electric cooperatives pay out millions of dollars in local and state taxes annually • Rural electric co-ops are responsible for raising the standard of living for its members—some 4-million farm families • Rural electrification has contributed greatly to the increased business of local merchants— tlu-oughout the nation, rural electric co-op members have spent more than $ 12-billion on elec- tric appliances and equipment alone • Rural electrics create business for utility industry—about 50% of the electricity used by co-op members is purchased from commercial utilities • Without the farmers’ initiative in organizing co-ops to serve their electrical needs, rural America might well be in the dark ages” or paying outrageously high prices for electrical energy • Rural electric oo-ops have made possible higher quality food and fiber for the nation in peace and war DUNCAN VALLEY ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE, INCORPORATED Directors DOUGLAS BRUBAKER President IVAN THYGERSON Vice President J.
