After twelve years of education, we must suddenly put away childish things and assume the responsibilities of young adults. As we reflect in the quietude of our own minds, we can begin to com- prehend what those twelve years have meant. Our knowledge and experiences have prepared us for the futureg now we must face that future. Seldom is there any looking back. What has gone before has been goodg what will come next should be better. Let us- Looh upward at the hill which rnust he clirnhed Today, forgetting thorns and grief that rnarhed The steeps of yesterday, as drifted snow Is unreniernhered when the feet of Spring Have passed . . . We are the pioneers of this New age and we haue wider trails to hlaze, Which lead to happiness . . . new cities that Must stand upon the hill of faith . . . New hridges to he huilt to span the seas Of hatred surging in the hearts of nzen, And there are songs that we rnust weave . . . new songs That are as runners hearing rnessages Of hope and love and peare . . . -from Progression by Inez Clark T horson DEDICATIO On a brisk September morning a new life was begun. Not a physical being, but rather a mental being within a group of physical beings. This was the birth of Education. At midmorning, Education advanced to a higher plane of learning, high school. Education is now approaching noon-day, with afternoon still to come. For some, formal education will stop here as they find jobs, marry, make homes, the others will continue in school, advancing to higher levels of learn- ing. But for both groups, sunset never approaches. Education is not begun all at once, for we learn as children to distinguish between hot and cold, black and white, Education never ends. Man continues to learn from sunrise to sunset. Reason, experience, failure, are all education. As noontime approaches and the seniors go their separate paths, we earnestly hope that each will con- tinue to learn and remember from Life. It is to the Swingin' Seniors of '61 that the 1961 edition of SMOKERINGS is dedicated with love and respect. .s x W ,MA , 2, f , V , f W f K , 5 k an ,.,.,nu,......-- M V 1 A At .,'f,vI'V' ,fin 1 ' v. k 5 QW' fum, I f. w. Help me to understand my pupils, to listen patiently to what they have to say and to answer all their questions kindly. Keep me from interrupting them, talking back to them and contradict- ing them. Make me as courteous to them as I would have them be to me. Give me the courage to confess my sins against my children and to ask of them forgiveness, when I know that I have done them wrong. May I not vainly hurt the feelings of my children. Forbid that I should laugh at their mistakes or resort to shame and ridicule as punishment. Let me not tempt a child to lie and steal. So guide me hour by hour that I may demon- strate by all I say and do that honesty produces happiness. Reduce, I pray, the meanness in me. May I cease to nag, and when I am out of sorts, help me, oh Lord, to hold my tongue. Blind me to the little errors of my children and help me to see the good things that they do. Give me a ready word for honest praise. Help me to treat my pupils as those of their own age, but let me not exact of them the judgments and conventions of adults. 9Allow me not to rob them of the opportunity to wait upon themselves, to think, to choose, and to make decisions. Forbid that I should ever punish them for my selfish satisfaction. May I grant them all of their wishes that are reasonable and have the courage always to withhold a privilege which I know will do them harm. Make me so fair and just, so considerate and companionable to my children that they will have a genuine esteem for me. Fit me to be loved and imitated by my children. With all Thy gifts, Oh Great Jehovah, give me calm and poise and self control. Amen. GARRY CLEVELAND MYERS GLEN WATERS High School Principal DION C. Instructor I5 SENIOR CLASS STORY As twilight shadows gather and bring to an end our high school days, we Seniors reminisce over the past years, remembering the events that have made immortal our years in D.H.S. These are small, yet they are the things which hold a special place in the heart of each Senior of the glorious class of '61. We treasure the things which can never be forgotten, such as the many long hours spent decorating for the junior-Senior Party, the unexplainable thrill of winning the homecoming parade, the sounds of hundreds of proud voices singing The Star Spangled Banneri' at each football game. These are mem- ories which will remain with us the rest of our lives. But now, as the cool breeze of nightfall brings us abruptly back to the present, we think of what the future holds, and we become rather frightened. Each Senior will go his separate way-some to seek a college education, some to find their place in their chosen occupation, and some to marry and provide for their families. But although we may never all be together again, we will have to remind us of our years at Duncan High School, these precious mem- ories and the most marvelous class motto of all. Fascinating Seniors of '61! ! WE'RE THE BEST, YES IT'S TRUE, SENIOR CLASS OF 'azz One year closer to our goal of becoming the Senior Class of ,62, this yearis junior Class takes its place among the greats of D.H.S. The year of 1960-61 was filled with memorable episodes: the election of our efficient, hard-working staff of class officers and sponsorsg the chagrin of our homecoming float being beaten by only three pointsg the selection of our queen candidates for football, and basketballg the Coronation of our queens at the Spanish Fiesta and the rodeog the athletic achievements of the Junior Class, both varsity and Powder Puffg our dramatic debut in Seventeenth Summer g and the overwhelming excitement of our first Prom, which took us into mystic fantasy beneath the sea. These were the highlights of our junior year. Yes, the past year has been a wonderful year of hard work, fun, and honors for D.H.S. and the junior Class of '61 made a large contribution to its success. 1FF'f 0 55 . K. T-. High, the peons of 60-61 got a terrific break. We felt like Kings and Queens entering the brand new high school building. We not only felt like Kings and Queens, we had our share of Queen Candidates, jeneane jones ffootballj, Karron johnson fbasketballj and Verna Lee Smallwood fRodeoj. We also contributed to the looks of this New Mansion by raising the money fby Workdayj to place the letters that spell Duncan Senior High School on top of the building. Our Sophomore float contributed to the beauty of the Homecoming parade. Also we had our lovely Karron Johnson for Sophomore cheerleader. Along with this we had several of our boys to make the Lettermen's Club. To help make all of this possible we had our Sophomore Class officers. President ...........Y ,........ Individually, the members of each, work together for a successful result. If members fail to work with others, there will be no success. The organizations of DHS Work with each other, through the Student Council, for a successful school year. Working individually, there would be a constant turmoil of projects and activities. But working together, the or- ganizational program runs as smoothly as a well-executed pass play. These words were repeated many times this year in DHS. The excitement and anticipation for the many awards began in autumn with the selection of a football queen and two attendants. There was much competition the week before homecoming as each class strove to win the trophy for the best float. Amidst a winter theme of Wonderland by Night, the varsity basketball queen was crowned and attended by two candidates. Run three laps and don't stop until youire finished! Get busy and do those ten push-ups. These were familiar phrases around DHS as the 1961 Powder Puff season officially opened. On the day of the 'big game' a Powder Puff king and attendant were elected by their respective teams. In May, the three classes voted on and elected the 1961 Annual Favorites. The junior class was given the privilege of electing outstanding senior boy and girl. All DHS voted on the most coveted honor given-the Crossman Award. As the school year comes to a successful conclusion, the Seniors of '61 will be remembered for their friendliness, honesty, and service to DHS. May these graduates always display these attributes so that in later years they may receive life's greatest awards. X Q ' J fuss XA5 b!l n ,5 wif' .l ' Y lLnvAv4vA,x WE U W V Q 2211 ' xi., 1 -5- Q. Throughout the school year these words echoed in the ears of DHS athletes of five major sports. September marked the opening of the 1960-61 season of sports. Coach Woody Cooper guided his team to a season record of 5-5-1. The tie came in a 0-0 deadlock with Hobbs, New Mexico. Duncan had its share of honors as Woody Cooper was named Boomer Conference Coach of the Year and junior Bill Pennington and seniors Harold Edelman, Terry Love, Mike Carnes and Jim Underwood were named to the all conference team. Basketball season started off with a bang with Duncan taking first place in the Southern Invitational Tournament. Disappointment was in store for all when the Demons suffered an overtime defeat at the hands of the Norman Tigers in the final game of the Regional Tournament. Enid Smith, leading DHS scorer, was selected for the all conference dream team. DHS baseballers, 1961 regional champs, slugged their way to the top only to be beaten by Tulsa Webster in the state championship tilt. Bennie Whitely, senior centerfielder, was Duncan's only selection for all conference. The 1961 track team won' recognition this year as regional class A Champs. Don Magruder, senior discus thrower, set a meet record with a heave of 145 feet and 9 3X4 inches. Billy Merrill, Sam Radcliffe, Fred Holdsclaw, and Doug Pruitt were the schoolls top golfers. They placed fourth in the state tournament. The 1961 athletes of DHS are to be commended upon making this year one of the finest ever experienced by Duncan in the field of sports. 501 I 'Inn 50, A 56 af U aff 79, AA 79 FOGTBALL Left to Right FIRST ROW Coach Bob V21r1C6 Steven W0Ody Jerry Cooper SECOND ROW: Rayful Merchant, Bennie Whiteley Coy Hill Patton Ralph Cole Hrlrolcl Edelman Terry LONG 101111 101165 Jffffy Caros Hilburn, Bill Cope, Tully Dunlap, Williaiii Gibbs Gary Farmer Hassebioek Mike Dixon Gary Lqne George Surratt Coach Woody Don Reed Van Pack, Sammy Burnett, THIRD ROW Bobby Davis R ' H ' - P liii Head Football Coach WOODY COOPER Robert Duffy, Harold Greer, Ivory james, Leon Talley, Charles Allen, Jay Sinclair, Eddie Woodall, Fred Holdsclaw, 'Larry Harvill, Mike Carnes, Don Magruder, Bill Pennington. if if I , 1 r A A f if Q Xi g a, , i 1 ASSISTANT COACHES Dean Slayton, Bob Vance, Johnny Lowry, Dick Dozier Duncan Duncan .,,..... From these three parties DHS chose its class officers for 1960-61. When football season got underway school spirit rose steadily as a result of bonfires, car parades, and pep assemblies. Homecoming, the float contest, and the Hobbs trip will long be remembered. Basketball season started with a bang as DHS took first place trophy in the Southern Invitational Tournament. Disappointment was in store for every- one when the Norman Tigers defeated the Demons in the final game of the Regional Tournament. Students were soon laughing, though, as the jr. Class presented Seven- teenfla Summer and the Seniors performed Tloe Many Lover of Doble Gillis. In spite of the weather, jr.-Sr. Weekend was a smashing success. Post- poned because of rain, the Powder Puff Bowl was played two weeks later. BAD! This is what Boy Appreciation Day wasn't, as the girls showed the boys how they would like to be treated. All the boys were entertained at a picnic, dance, and prevue fall expenses paid by the girlsj. As an added attrac- tion a beautiful Impala was given away as a door prize. Climaxing a year of unforgettable events were the Senior activities. These included the Senior Picnic, Baccalaureate, Luau, and a Senior party after grad- uation exercises.
