Duncan gcsnmcs Foreword To every man there openeth A way, and ways, and a way, And the high soul climbs the high way, And the low soul grapes the low: And in between on the misty flats, The rest drift to and fro. But to every man there openeth A high way and a low, And every man decideth The way his soul shall go. Dreams are the essence of life. What would life be without dreams? Webster says, A dream is an imaginary vision or reverie, usually strange or impractical. But all dreams are not impractical. Dreams are the am- bition, loves, and hopes of the young and old. When a person commences life, he sees bright dreams of wealth, love, security, and dignity. These dreams sustain him in times of hardships and give him hope in hours of despair. When he approaches the end of his life's journey, his dreams are the last thing he leaves behind. A person's dreams determine his life. As a man thinketh, so is he. The 1960 Smokerings points to the future and records fulfillments of the past. Dedication It was the first brisk warm day of spring, and all the Demons were gathered in front of DHS awaiting the bell to call them to their fourth hour classes. Suddenly, to the main entrance of the building, approached ci shiny Oldsmobile. A stately lady stepped from the running board of this pumpkin-turned carriage. A clamor arose around the school. Has Cind- erella discovered a new beau? The story goes that this same lady, at her debut ball, met a knightly warrior who fell in love with her. The clock struck twelve, and the lady rushed from his arms. For months to come, he searched in vain for his lady love. Not finding her, he ioined Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War. While ascending San Juan Hill, the man met his death. This story, to date, has never been denied. In the years to follow, this lady devoted her time to the reading of the classics and contemporary authors. lt was in her later years that she received the call to pass on the treasures of these great works. To the evercoming generation of youth, she dedicated her life. Never was there a more devoted disciple of the task. Through the term papers and Shake- speare's comedies and tragedies, the deep appreciation for this lady is ever present. For nineteen years, she gave of her time, energy, knowledge, and abilities to DHS students. Yes, her years of teaching have been re- warding. To Miss Martha Veal, we dedicate the 1960 edition of Smoke- rings, with gratitude and thanks. T960 finds Duncan High School ready to move to a new school plant. The present staff of 46 teachers and three secretaries carry out a well planned program for modern living. An alert Board of Educa- tion works diligently with Superintendent Dion C. Wood. Principal Glen Waters, assisted by Randall Holladay, lead well trained class- room teachers in a scholastic curriculum rated with the better schools in Oklahoma. There has been sharp progress in Duncan High School during the last twenty years. ln T938 the present auditorium was considered an ultra modern addition. Today it will not seat the student body. In T940 Mr. Wood took the position of superintendent. There was then a student body of 698 and a faculty of thirty. Both have almost doubled. Although every available space has been converted into classrooms, the school is overcrowded. The spacious rooms of the new building will be welcomed by both students and teachers. Duncan has followed the trend of increasing the opportunity to study mathematics, science, and modern languages. The new build- ing will have fine laboratories and one of the best language labora- tories in the southwest. The well-rounded program of DHS is a result of the unselfish ser- vice of teachers who are always willing to work beyond the call of duty inside the classroom and to give of their time in the various clubs of the departments. This was the last senior class that went to school at the build- ing constructed in 1936. Let's go back to 1919, when thirty-nine seniors graduated from DHS. There were twelve boys and twenty-seven girls. ln 1936, there were fifty-one boys and fifty-five girls in a senior class of 106 people. As a class proiect, the senior class of 1941 put linoleum on the floor of the old Student Council room. Other senior classes donated the grand piano in the auditorium and the trophy case. The 1960 seniors have also been outstanding throughout their high school career. In 1957-58, Sue Nell Crutchfield, president, David Holden, vice-president, Karen Johnson, secretary, and Emma Lee Tucker, reporter, led their class. In 1958-'59, the officers were John Ray Green, president, Linda Pat Driver, vice-president, Patti McGuire, secretary-treasurer, and Leigh Smith, reporter. The 1960 officers also served well. The seniors even won the Junior-Senior Weekend this year. Truly this senior class, as those before it, was a good class. The bells ring, and the first students enter the new Duncan High School building. Among them are approximately 144 juniors. The juniors as a class have made outstanding progress in the last twenty- three years. The enrollment has increased by 2302, and the academic record of the juniors has made equally outstanding achievements. One of the first activities sponsored by the juniors was a Jr.-Sr. Banquet. The money was raised by the juniors through various projects and by class dues. This Banquet was an annual affair until it became difficult to accom- modate both classes, due to the growth of D.H.S. The Jr.-Sr. Prom soon took the position once held by the banquet. It, too, is sponsored by the junior class and is financed in much the same way. Prior to 1951, there had been a rivalry between the juniors and the sen- iors. Each year it grew more and more violent , due to the fact that neither class was willing to admit defeat. ln 1951, the junior and senior officers met to try to reach a peaceful agreement. From this meeting emerged Jr.-Sr. Weekend. During this weekend the two classes would be able to let off steam in various types of contests. This is the basis for the field day events and the Powder Puff Bowl. The banquet is a restoration of the original Jr.- Sr. Banquet. The other features have been added throughout the years. The juniors have presented numerous outstanding plays, such as You Can't Take It with You 09521, Time Out for Ginger 119571, and this year's production, Mother Was a Freshman. Each year 5'X: of the junior class is elected to the National Honor Society. They are chosen because of their scholarship, character, service, loyalty, and citizenship. August 31 began the year for the junior class of 1960. Its officers, all candidates of the Beatnik party, were elected in September. They were: Robert Davenport, president, Mike Dixon, vice-president, Janet Cox, secretary, and Johnny Jones, reporter. Miss Tex Ann Aldriedge was selected chairman of sponsors. A council, composed of two representatives from each American History class, transacted the business for the class. The junior float, Rock 'n Roll El Reno, won first place in the homecom- ing parade, honoring Julia Shelton, junior football queen candidate. Repre- senting the juniors in basketball royalty was Darla Gorbet. Janet Cox was annual queen candidate and also Duncan JCL queen. There was a touch of masculinity in the royalty with Mike Dixon carrying the torch as annual king candidate, and Robert Davenport as king of the Duncan JCL. Steve Woody was chosen Powder Puff King candidate by the junior girls. All the juniors were walking around with their hands in the air about the first of December, displaying their cherished class rings. lt took the girls several weeks to persuade the boys to part with theirs. After the junior play, the remainder of the year was filled to the brim with activities, such as the junior assembly Jr.-Sr. weekend, National Merit Scholarship tests and various other organizations' activities. Unless the unexpected happens flet's keep our fingers crossedl the junior class of 1960 will be the first graduating class in the new DHS. V 4 A scene from the iunior play Robert Davenport receiving the trophy for the winning float. We're the best Yes, it's true Senior class of '62 The Sophomore class of 1937 was the first to come to the present DHS, and now, twenty-three years later, the Sophomore class of 1960 will be the last to leave. Looking back, we see a wonderful year. Even when our efforts in the homecoming float were lost, we went on to greater victories. Through the entire class's determination to be the best, David Ben- son was selected Ugly Man on the Campus, and Danny Coleman and Patsy Lewis became this year's Annual King and Queen. Also in the way of royalty, the class was well represented by its other queen candidates - Darlene Goldsmith, Pam Paramore, and Mary Kinnibrugh. In the field of sports the Sophomores came through again. Eight boys earned a letter and became members of the Lettermen's Club. Beverly Wharton and Darlene Goldsmith, Sophomore cheerleader and alternate cheerleader, were always out front to cheer them on. Behind the class through good and bad were the class officers - Bill Pennington, Jim Weber, Beverly Worrell, and Beverly Andrews. Each one worked to make the Sophmore class of 1960 the best ever. There has been much progress from 1937 to 1960, but this is only the beginning of what will be accomplished by the future students of DHS. X X , 3 ,L i Pofricic Youngblood Loretto Youree Donna Kay Zigler Sophomore Counc1l Sophomore Act1v1t1es Webster says an organization is a systematic union of individuals in a body whose officers, agents, and members work together for a common end. This is demonstrated when the Pep Club cheers the foot- ball and basketball boys to victory or when the Spanish Club members or Latin Club members get together to learn about other cultures. Walk- ing by the gymnasium, a person can hear the band and chorus learning new music. Therefore it seems that the organizations of DHS all meet the qualifications of the definition of organization. Beniamin Franklin once said, When the well's dry, we know the worth of water. This saying could also be applied to clubs and or- ganizations such as: Student Council, National Honor Society, Trade and lndustry Club, National Forensic League, Journalism and Annual Staffs. What would DHS do without its organizations? Our school would prob- ably be a very dull place without them. I I MQ Our Sweetheart KAREN SUE LILLY 14 4 The feats accomplished by Duncan High School athletes in the 1959- 60 campaign are certainly something to set down and admire. Being ham- pered by youth, inexperience, and even a coaching change meant very little to the iunior-laden Demons. August 25th kicked off another year of football. Coach Earl Presley had but two weeks to whip a club together which would have to play one of the toughest schedules in the state. The Demons' opponents would be from three states, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. Playing over their heads all year, Duncan went down to the wire in the Boomer Con- ference, being beaten by Norman in the showdown game. Danny Eoff, Demon center, was an all-conference, all-state, Wigwam All-American selection. On November lst came the first work-outs of the Duncan High School roundballers. Laclc of height and little experience were the first thoughts of Coach Dick Dozier as he put his boys through numerous drills, preparing for the Anadarko game. Duncan tied for fourth in the conference with three wins and seven losses. Jim Underwood, Duncan forward, was a unanimous all-conference choice, and was also the leading junior scorer in the state. Johnnie Smith and Richard Stevenson were honorable men- tion selections. Duncan baseballers were also beaten out of the Boomer Conference by Norman. Duncan lost both games of the double header at Norman to finish their conference play with a 4-2 record. The Demons over-all record was even at ll wins and ll losses. Catcher, Jim Underwood, first base- man, Danny Eoff, and second sacker Johnie Jones landed spots on the all conference team. Eoff was also selected to the all-state team. Coach Johnny Lowry will return 5 starters in Underwood, Jones, Bill Pennington, Larry Wood, and Johnnie Smith. The cindermen, under the guidance of Coach Quannah Cox, qualified five men for the state meet. Dixie Jackson took third in the 220 yard dash to garner Duncan's only points. The girl's golf team won the state 2-ball and 4-ball championship. The boy's golf team won the Southern Invitational Tournament. It was started by Mr. Crossman, the first publisher of the Duncan annual. Each year, in the spring, the iunior class elects an outstanding senior boy and girl. The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors two awards each year. The DAR citizenship award winner is chosen by the senior class from a list of girls nominated by the faculty. The history award winner must be an American History student. The winner makes the highest score on a competitive test given by the history teachers. The football team chooses a football queen and two attendants, the basketball queen and attendants are chosen by the varsity basket- ball team. FFA boys nominate four girls, one from each class, for Rodeo queen, the one who sells the most rodeo tickets is crowned queen at the annual rodeo. Spanish queen candidates are nominated by the Spanish classes. ln 1960, the girl who received the highest number of popular votes was crowned queen at the fiesta. This year, for the first time, the annual staff gave a merit award to the senior who left the greatest mark for good on the school. Homecoming was the big event of October. The iunior class captured the first place trophy in the float competition. Bonfires and pep assemblies boosted school spirit during the football months. Memories of the Duncan-Nor- man game will linger with us. We will remember not only our loss of the Boomer conference but also the unbearable cold weather and wind that night. Students wrapped in blankets were common sights. The class plays came next. Lots of time and hard work were put into Mother Was a Freshman and The Form Divine. With March came wind and Junior-Senior Weekend. The seniors trounced the iuniors both in field day events and the Powder Puff Bowl. In the faculty basketball game Bert Lana was injured on the court. The intramural basketball race was thrilling, Scotte Hecht's team copped the trophy. The sportsmanship trophy went to Allan Burlison's homeroom. The Student Council members will long remember the hot dogs and cokes sold at these games. Hola, amiga, was the greeting during the week of the Spanish Fiesta in April. The most unforgettable day in April was that mad, mad, mad April l when DHS seniors became tramps. Freight train rides to nearby cities, sick stomachs and sleepless nights were all part of the event. With May came the FFA rodeo, chorus concerts, band concerts, Latin banquet, Mother's Day assembly and senior activities. One high point in May was the Junior-Senior prom where seniors were taken on a Sentimental Journey. Award assembly found many seniors sitting in the clouds as they received all kinds of awards. Senior picnic, luncheon, baccalaureate, and finally graduation ended high school for the 277 DHS seniors. ACTI If wouldn'f be on fire, would if? -.
