I say the future lies waiting To take shape from my mind .... The future! A word that arouses high hopes and deep excitement, the future has always been for every dreamer the someday when his dreams come true. Having a soul, man has always been a creature of visions, and all his aspirations are for the sole purpose of seeing those ideals come true. Selfish, perhaps, and yet, without dreams there would be no reality-only existence. Because reality must first be mere ideas in the minds of dreamers, our dreams will be the reality of tomorrow. Thus, in the 1958 Smokerings is written the future. Step into its pages and enter tomorrow! X r, lg lg N. -is ,.,..,, 5 l Flip E' X l The most precious year in life-the senior year-touched with memories of the past, it holds the indecision of the present and looks with hope to the future. lt is a time of miracles-when a new adult steps into the world, an adult who is a mixture of wonder and awe and faith, when the adult looks back cmd sees what was a time of happiness. lt is a time of satisfaction-one part of life complete and successful when a diploma is laid in a waiting hand. These are the things which make up a senior year and to those who enjoy, remember, ancl cherish these things and feelings, to the ones to whom the senior year belongs - The Seniors of yesterday, today, and tomorrow, wherever and whoever they are, we of the D. ' N IDRS Senior Class Story Not quite ready for the rocking chair and cane, but ready for all the experiences of adulthood, the seniors of 1958 traveled through their last year in DHS. No one is ever too old to enioy queens. Arlene Sims, senior, was football queen and Linda Beth Benson was DHS's basketball queen. Of course, leave us not forget Qif you'll forgive the grammarl the annual king, Gary Richards. Then too, there was the Powder Puff Bowl king, Grady Venable. Ah yes, we did enioy it all. For olde times sake, let's rehash olde times' happenings. Three years ago, excitement in the form of a bomb shook DHS. Remember two years ago the music room took on a new look? Yup, 20th Century Provincial barn style complete with one live horse! Then this year the Den was remodeled, dan-dee dogs were buried, green lights were chucked, and mercy me, the ten-minute break broke! But we seniors still survived. The YMCA opened up right across from high school! The senior class of T958 had leadership from and by many people. Gary Richards was named the most outstanding senior boy and also received the coveted Crossman Award. Linda Benson was named outstanding senior girl. The senior class is also proud of Jeanne Smith, winner of a S1000 National Merit Scholarship. She proved that the senior class did have smart girls. Oh, those rough workouts., moaned senior girls as they drilled for the annual Powder Puff game. Their coaches ffor safety reasons we won't print any namesll really cracked the whip on them. But all their work and bruises were not in vain for the seniors victoriously defeated the iuniors. The senior class will never forget the Junior-Senior Prom and the Sayonara Seniors 58. It was beautiful. Everyone had a wonderful time. 1958 senior class officers were Gary Richards, president, Jo Ann Buckholts, vice president, Fern Allen, secretary-treasurer, and J. W. Lanier, reporter. Every- one take their hats off to these seniors. They did a superb job. All in all, it was a good year for everyone and without further ado, the SENIORS OF 1958 bid you a fond farewell. W , . ' JEVS? 'fhe boys soon learned to peek around corners for the girls hiding to catch them. This was the first time that the boys were ever afraid of the girls, but then this was the first time the girls had such a purpose for living. Four fine representatives of the junior class were the class officers. These were: Janie Leonard, president, Judy Nelson, vice-president, Nancy Murray, secretary, Sharon Shaklee, reporter. With the first signs of autumn came football season. And with football came queens. The junior football queen. candidate was Judy Nelson. Another representing the beauty of the junior class was Georgia Kay Bour- land, the junior basketball queen candidate. The junior girls knew what work was when they began searching for Junior- Senior Weekend dates with those poor hapless victims Calias junior boysj. Then came the Powder Puff football game. Even though the juniors weren't victorious, they still got plenty of valuable training for their next game. The juniors didn't let this defeat bother them. They still had plenty of pep and were led by the three junior cheerleaders, Kay Bennett, Anita Griggs and Judy Nelson. The boys were happy when Sadie Hawkins Day Plus One came around. This is better known as the time when the girls do the asking and the paying. But the juniors had their share of honors. Fifteen juniors were initiated into the National Honor Society. Then six juniors were chosen for Girls' and Boys' State. They were: Marjorie Brooks, Mary Ann Bulla, Anita Griggs, Al Chew, Larry Edwards and Bob Leedy. More honors were heaped upon the juniors when Nancy Romine received the Sir Alexander Fleiming award for outstanding work in the field of science. Then came the prom and it was Sayonara Seniors. But this wasn't really good-bye to the seniors. For the juniors of today are the seniors of tomorrow. ll JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS From left to right: Sharon Shcklee, reporter, Nancy Murray, secretary-treasurer, Judy Nelson, vice-president Jayne Leonard, president. -'PH ww.
