Disrexgarding fas usualj the sage suggestions concerning the nomination for the dedication, we took the matter into our own hands and turned the fig- urative tables. Because of her endless patience, con- stant toil beyond requirements of duty, and the resistance of the urge to throttle approximately forty per cent of the edi- tors, we dedicate the IQ48 Smokerings to our sponsor, Mrs. Olive Stewart. There is no one who deserves this honor, from the standpoint of service and interest in the students, more than Mrs. Stewart ,g gg x 03 ' - v s. J . 7 K s vfi X X4-X R My 1' HX -5 fimveworcl After wrestling long hours with the fickle gods who govern the actions of the student editors, we of the Smoke- ring Staff have decided upon the motif for the 1947-48 edition. As usual from the earliest beckonings of September to the long awaited release of an expiring May, the events of Duncan High School have been concerned with and sym- bolized by a series of holidays, dates, and festive occasions. Some of these special days, such as Labor Day, Thanksgiv- ing, Christmas, and New Years, have universal and quite obvious meanings. Others hold complete significance and appropriateness only if interpreted through the medium of D. H. S. tradition. The first event, of course, in every school year is the en- rollment represented by Labor Dayg the last events are May Day which depicts the final sports events of the year and Mothers' Day represented by our Senior Mothers. In between we find most of the remaining holidays symbolizing the scho- lastic and extra-curricular activities, such as clubs, athletics, honors, and social events. We take our cue from the equinoxes, the calendar, and our trusty almanac in presenting an edition of Smolqering: which we hope will prove to be a thorough representation of the school year 1947-48. --1f--Hama-3 nv -rfu c 'Q-fc' . i 6 V - .Z V 6 I 4' 1-A .- f 'V ' v s ,.., 'I 65532 V 1 , xx 91.4, ,V Q 'VI Wztllifs l Vif A ' 'WXXKXYV 4 1 , K 1 .-Q 4 D - ,L: 'iZAi N - If S i , .I , ,, . if J A 1 ,i i ll l - i , A f' , J. , at P lf . fe-is Z, 4 nl :?? Que? .I Ja WELL The 1947 edition of the Demons fought two of the most bitter rivals of any squad, lack of experience and weight. These two factors, added to an iron-clad schedule, ieduced the band of Demons to a hoard of angels until midseason. After nine weeks of ,inspired work by Coach Davenport and his staff, as well as an equal portion of work by each player, thc boys were molded into a well-oiled machine which was stopped only twice more during the season. From the opening yvhistle of the first contest the plucky band of Demons steadily improved until the sixth game which was with Ardmore. That Friday night an inspired host of footballers descended on the Ardmore Tigers and sent them running for cover with a rumbling last half ground attack which put them into the win column to the tune of rg'-6. The following Friday the Demons' grindng ground attack con- Smelh Noone sou FOOTBALL RECORD , They We Capitol Hill . ' .... 20 0 Pauls Valle ,,,,. Federick .Y ..... 35 Z Altus . . . The game was played at Oklahoma City and proved to be a disastrous home.coming for the Pirates. The next week the Demons were somewhat baffled by the lightning fast attack of El Reno Indians and came out the short end of a 27-19 score. The game with Lawton's Wolverines was played in a sea of mud with the hard-hitting Demon backfield ripping through a tenacious Lawton defense to a sweet x3-o victory. A feature of this game was the cnxshing of a, vaunted Wolverine ground game by the rock-ribbed Demon line, bulwarked by All State Guard, Ray Smith, and All District Tackle, lim Frye. To dose the season the Chickasha Chicks invaded Halliburton Stadium to gain a hard fought district title from the Demons who, none-the.less, maintained the second place in the district 2-A which was also the berth of last year's heavier and more experienced team. IIMMIE FLOYD The National Honor Society Citizenship Award is offered each semester to any senior high school student. In making this award, the Honor Society recognizes the student who is outstanding in the field of citizenship. The recipient of the award is chosen chiefly because of his generally constructive attitude, rather than for his scholastic achievements. The active membership of the Honor Society :hooses the highest two candidatesg and a five- rnember committee composed of the principal, the National Honor Society sponsor, and three faculty members, appointed by the principal, make the fin- al selection. The candidates are judged by the fol- lowing qualifications: constructive school service, :onstructive community service, loyalty, cooperation abiding by rules, promotion of school to outsiders, respecting the rights of others, courtesy, enjoying doing things, working with an objective, accepting responsibility, and accepting criticism. :Nuy- x 'Q , Tl v.. . . ff : ,'.'.'..f. n if . - - o I BIRTH DAY George Washington, the father of his country, was, of course, an important citizen.
