Traditions have long been a part of any organized society in which there have been cultural contributions worthy of being passed on to future generations. They are things which have made our lives richer and more abundant by their very being, and we are compelled by rightful duty to pass them on, enriched if possible, to others that they too might enjoy them and realize from them all the benefits that we have been fortunate enough to have known. They are things which we accept with a challenge and a near-sacred trust. They challenge us to add to their meaning, and trust us to guard their past. They accept nothing but the best from us, and in return they promise us a wealth of heritage requiring many years in its formation. We have, at Duncan High School, a single tradition which serves as a symbol of all our traditions-it is passing down the peace pipe from seniors to juniors. It is more than one person merely handing a stick of wood to another. It entails the relinquishing of rights and privileges of one group to another, but with the rights and privileges it also places that same honored obligation to use them well that we accepted only one short year ago. We have endeavored in the 1947 Smokerings to picture all of the traditions of Duncan High School which have made our years here the most cherished of our lives. C9 .
