They are things which have made our lives richer and more abundant by their very being, and we are compelled by rightful duty to pass them on, enriched if possible, to others that they too might enjoy them and realize from them all the benefits that we have been fortunate enough to have known. They are things which we accept with a challenge and a near-sacred trust. They challenge us to add to their meaning, and trust us to guard their past. They accept nothing but the best from us, and in return they promise us a wealth of heritage requiring many years in its formation. We have, at Duncan High School, a single tradition which serves as a symbol of all our traditions-it is passing down the peace pipe from seniors to juniors. It is more than one person merely handing a stick of wood to another. It entails the relinquishing of rights and privileges of one group to another, but with the rights and privileges it also places that same honored obligation to use them well that we accepted only one short year ago. We have endeavored in the 1947 Smokerings to picture all of the traditions of Duncan High School which have made our years here the most cherished of our lives. C9 . We believe that a spirit of fair play should be manifested in all our transactions with one another. We believe that Duncan' High School offers us an opportunity to train for worthy Christian citizenship and a life of usefulness. We, therefore, pledge ourselves to be loyal to Duncan High School and to the ideals for which it stands. HuJfforiLam Nw K fm, -.VN 1, LIVICQRVI Uymnasium Choo! S. Mwwwmw DEDICATION MAM IE LEE I-IALLETT The achievements of a school are many times the results of the traditions which surround it. Duncan High School has many traditions, but the most important and influential are the teach- eds who have remained through the years to in- struct our students. Mrs. Mamie Lee Hallett is one of these teachers. Her twenty-three years of loyalty and devotion to the school anl her genuine interest in the boys and girls have won her a place in the memory of each student. We can also look forward to the important part she is destined to play in the lives of the future stu- dents of Duncan High School. In choosing to dedicate the 1947 Smokering: to Mrs. Hallett, we honor not only her but all teachers who have given their lives to the guid- ance of youth. W,,N,,,.. WOODS Superintendent of Schools flmrrun fgihg Srlynxxls Buxu'm.Glz1u.lymtox Students and Alumni: As students of Duncan High School enter into the atomic era, we of the faculty and the administration hope that they will find them- selves well-founded in the fundamentals of an education uhich will enable them to live happier and more useful lives. To obtain these fundamentals it is necessary that all students put forth a large measure of directed effort. Most of us teachers have dedicated our lives and our ambitions to bettering the opportunities of boys and girls. If we have succeeded in providing that inspiration which enables students of Duncan High School to live better lives devoted to the service of God and fellow-man, we are happy to have had a small part in their education. lay the memories of this school be pleasant! - Dion C. Wood, Supt. - I. GORDON STEPHENS Principal The traditional hub-buh in the principal's office speaks for itself if one but listens. The center of our learning habitat resides therein as the admin- istrators with their forward outlook and constant dynamic efforts to further the progress of education are consistently planning and organizing for a still more effective educational system. The Council was organized not to assist in solving disciplinary problems, but to aid in en couraging and sponsoring school activities. The per sonnel of the Student Council for 1946-47 is corn- posed of the president, vice-president, and secre tary-treasurer elected by the student body and six teen representatives elected by their respective home rooms to serve for one school year. Under the able guidance of Miss Mary Black and Bolles, Iimmic McDonald, Larry Hubbard Robbie Lou , Betty Lou Lowry, Eva Lou Green leadership of Bill Hall, the Duncan High School Student Council of 1946-47 has had one of the most successful years in its history. Besides sponsoring many projects and student activities during the year, the Duncan delegates secured the vice-presidency of the Federation of Oklahoma High School Stu- dent Councils for D. H. The most popular mothers of fourteen seniors have been chosen to supervise and counsel the various Senior activitiesg they also act as representa- tives of all senior mothers at the Mothers' Day Assembly. This tradition promotes a better understanding among students, teachers, and parents by bringing them into closer contact with each other. It adds the final touch to a year which is the climax of our school years. The Seniors sincerely appreciate the cooperation of the Senior Mothers in making this last high school year a memorable one. Bill was elected to the National Honor Society in his junior year, he is a member of the Number One high school debate team and has been a member of the high school band and the football squad. For three years he has been a mem- ber of the Student Council, serving as vice- president in his junior year, and president in his senior year. Many other things make Bill outstanding. 'His friendly, courteous attitude toward teach- ers and students, and his willing support of and participation in all school activities were important factors in the choice of Outstand- ing Senior Boy. Our congratulations, Bill, on being an out- standing example of what a senior boy should be. VIRGINIA EARNHART OUTSTANDING SENIOR GIRL Virginia Earnhart has been selected as the outstanding Senior Girl by the junior class. Virginia was elected to the National Honor Society in her junior year, has participated in debate for two years, has served on the Smoiqcrings staff for two years-in 1946 as assistant business manager, and in 1947 as business manager. She is now president of the senior class. She has been a member of the Future Homemakers of America Club for three years, serving as vice-president in her junior year and as president in her senior year. While making this award, the juniors con- sidered Virginia's ability to cooperate with others in the achievement of a goal, her cheer- ful, helpful attitude in school activities, and her pleasant, alert personality.
