It is an example of what hard work and persistent determination will accomplish. In the year 1916 A. D. 57 Freshmen came to Duncan High School with a desire to be enlightened in some of the mysterious subjects such as Algebra and Latin. Of the original 57 who started out 22 have battled steadily against all odds and have finished the struggle here victorious. Our class has had many additional students from other places and we are graduating with 43 members. Frank Jackson was our president for the first three years and he served us faithfully and ably as did also our senior president, Millage Smith. Our Senior class is the largest class that has ever graduated from Duncan High School, and our works answer themselves for the things we have accomplished. You may expect our future to be as brilliant as the past has been satisfactory. 1,921 F O 0 T P R I N' 'I' V This page dedicated to Miss Marie Love Class Mother. 26 ll I 1921 F O 0 'I' P R 1 N 'I' F 971 EDWARD CARMICHAEL Staff Cartoonist 27 1,921 WMI? The first few days were spent getting our classes arranged and get- ting in the wrong class rooms but after some time we became used to the rules of the school and elected the officers who were as as follows: Thomas Wilkinson, Presidentg Ona Lee Hightower, Vice President, Dud Bonner, Yell Mastery Miss Myer, Class Advisor. The colors were Lavendar and White, and the flower, the Wisteria. A few weeks later we got Mr. Hill's consent to go on a picnic provided we take a teacher and several ladies with us. We went on a weinnie roast to the Park. Our next social was a Hallowe'en party given by May Russell. That year the following Freshmen entered the County Contest: Willie Mae Waller, Frances Armstrong, Thomas Wilkinson and Oscar Smith. Again in September 1919 seventy of the former number entered as Sophomores. The officers of that year were: Thomas Wilkinson, President, Edna Cates, Secretary and Treasurer, Dud Bonner, Yell Mastery Miss Myer, Class Advisor. During the term only two socials were given, the hostesses being Edna Cate and Maye Russell. In 1920 only forty-seven were left of those who were Sophmores in 1919. The Junior officers were: Fred Watkins, Presidentg Edith Furst, Secretary and Treasurer: Grover Kilgore, Yell Master, Fern Pollard, Reporter, Mr. Beck, Class Ad- visor. On Hallowe'en a delightful party was given by Edith Furst, for the Juniors and teachers of D. H. S. During the last month of our school term the Juniors went on a fishing trip to Beaver. It was a real fishing trip although no fish were caught. 35 'I l 7 l L i Y at 1921 it F O O 'I' P R I N 'I' S' N - 36 ll , 51. 1,921 Q .U I .U un' Z ff!! , I f '-f-1 f ff if f f ga IWII fl rm wg in luh I' ' I ' fl 11 0 :' I ll ll fb W Q, Q, l :'. .,11'i5f l': JJ 'qw 'W fl ? Some of us who were Freshmen last year had dropped out it is true, but we still have a large number. We had a meeting about a week after school began and elected Billy Roberts as our presidentg Dorthy Nicholas as vice presidentg Velma Burkelo as secretary, Dorthy Gilbert as treasurer, and Miss Hill as class advisor, well adapted to the place. We have had many jolly times this year. We were given a day to have a pro- gram in Assembly and showed our ability to entertain as well as to study. Our first entertainment was a tack party given at the home of our class advisor. Next we entertained the Kingfisher boys after the ball game and later on we tried our luck as fishermen on Little Beaver. Then on May Thirteenth a farewell party to our Sophomore year was given, where we wished to see all, as Juniors next year. 44 1,921 ' f , X V feQfa5?5?, ?i?3 f K V 2 5 I 1 ,z 14 ' 'Sr I 0 4 X r. f XX 5, V f , .652 2 I QQ J fi 5 . Club, one of the strongest organizations in the High School, met at the home of Anny Ruth Trice, Sept. 23rd and organized for the ylear 1920-1921. Anny Ruth Trice was elected president, Volna Vandagriff, secretary, Venice Furst, re- porterg Miss Marie Love, Sponsor. Other members are Beula Jackson, Edith Furst, Olga Sledge, Carolyne Caldwell, Dorthy Gilbert, Edna Cates, Marie Varney, Maurine Brunsen, Cline Davis, and Clara Hite. The club organized for the purpose of a good time and also to help the school in any way they could. Anny Ruth Trice was ag wonderful president and all the other officers have done their part throughout the year. The next meeting which was also a business meeting was held at the home of Miss Clyne Davis. The club colors which were decided upon at this meeting was Field Mouse Gray and Old Rose which were to be worn at all school occasions. The next meeting was at the home of Miss Maurine Brunsens October 19th. This was our first social meeting and guests were invited, who were Messrs J. W. Root, Jimmy Randol, Ted Gilbert, Charles Schick, Frank Jackson, Jessie Kendrick, ,Elwood Dunbarr, and Guy Doak. Next was a farewell party given by Olga Sledge in honor of Clyne Davis who was leaving here to make her home in Oklahoma City. The evening was enjoyed by everyone. V The club had regular business meetings every two weeks, and many other socials. November 18th, Beula Jackson entertained with a fudge party. The evening was enjoyed by all the guests. The next thing which was a great occasion wap the Thanksgiving Dinner given at the home of Miss Vivian Doak when a number of the boys were home from college. The evening was enjoyed by everyone present. Another big event of the season was the Dinner Dance at the Hoskins Hotel, Friday evening, December 31, 1920. The table was beautifully decorated with the club colors and the evening was enjoyed by everyone present. After the dance we all went to the midnight matinee at the Pastime Theatre. Many other enjoyable things were had during' the year and the F. Hi.'s made a good record for the year in having a good time. . 53 ' g, 1 1 1 ' Q: 1,921 F O 0 'r P R 1 N 'I' S' If fr BOARD OF EDUCATION The Duncan schools have made remarkable progress the last few years and a large measure of that 'success is due the progressive Board of Education. They have always been alert to the best interests of the schools and have been willing to neglect their own work to look after the interest of the schools. They have this year worked under the most trying circumstances that any board has had to meet. We have this year had an oil city population to take care of with a cotton town assessed valuation. Despite the high price of materials and high labor they last yealr built the present high school building. The personel of the Board is as follows: E. H..Bond, lawyer, Presidentg E. J. Leeman, newspaper. Vice Presidentg C. HT. Lawrence, bookkeeper, Secretaryg D. A. Fowler, banker, Treasurerg J. E. Kendrick, lumber, Memberg H. T. Blake, livestock man, Member. 54 1,921 F 0 0 -rr p R 1 N 'I' 97: iv PARENT-TEACHER CLUBS All the ward schools have very efficient Parent-Teacher Clubs that have taken a large part in the improvements of the schools. Whenever the teachers have found that they needed something that the Board of Education could not furnish, they have always found these clubs willing to get it for them. Toward the close of this year the parents and teachers of the entire town met at the high school and organized the Central Parent-Teacher Association. This club has done wonders for the grounds at the high school building. They raised over three hundred dollars and spent the entire amount in beautifying the grounds. We are expecting great things from these clubs in the future. 55 1921 TD O SV-UMZW O T -.nw R I - T 'mx Q DEBATING TEAM SMITH, REINHARDT, ROBERTS In the preliminary tryouts to determine who should represent the Duncan High School in debate for the year 1920-21 Millage Smith, Stella Reinhardt and Billy Roberts made the first team. We were first matched against Chickasha. For some reason Chickasha's High School could not get together a team to go against usg so they forfeited to us. We were next pitted against Lawton High. Lawton agreed to come to Duncan. The Lawton team came and seemed to be very confident, but when the last speech had been delivered it was easy to forecast the decision of the judges-another victory for Duncan. The Duncan team was especially strong in rebuttal. The defenses of the Lawton team were in ruins when the battle was over. Duncan defended the af- firmative and Lawton the negative. Our next contest was with Tuttle High School. The team arrived in Tuttle late in the afternoon with a sandstorm blowing and rain threatening. When the hour came for the debate we were one judge short and we had to go into the debate with only two judges and submit to a decision by them. It took these two judges forty min- utes to reach a decision. The decision went to Tuttle. This ended the career of the debate team for the year. 56 'L -LVN W , l xg 1,921 W F 0 0 'r P R 1 N fr g 1 AMUSEMENT CARNIVAL Last winter alniost the entire Junior and Senior High School staged what was known as a huge and saupenduous carnival. H. S., which was started in the fall term of 1919. The editor and business manager were Jim Reinhardt and Clint Roberts, re- spectively. These boys put out a good snappy newspaper, that won third place in class B at the state contest in Norman. The newspaper was edited this year by Minnie Petersen and its business trans- acted by Millage Smith. On account of increased enrollment in High School this Year, we were placed in class A competing against Tulsa, Muskogee, Oklahoma City and Enid, and failed to place in Norman. However, we have the satisfaction of having had several leading school men of the state, say that the Booster was the best paper that came to their office. The policy of the Booster has been to be a real service to the school rather than to attempt to follow the finely drawn lines of journalistic designs. The staff has worked hard this year and tried to cover the entre field of student activities. Sometimes Mr. Davis got rather hardboiled with the editress and sometimes she would pass it on to her assistants who in turn passed it on to the student body generally. However, this method got results for the Booster was always made up of live, snappy news articles. The staff was splendidly supported by the business men and they are as much responsible for the success of the Booster as any one else. The Booster next year will be in the hands of the Class in Journalism and it is their ambition to make it better than ever before, to make it reach every student in the whole school and finally to win the prize next year at the State University. 65 1, 1 nn.. nun: -11 i 2 1921 avr o o m p R. 1 nz m 9 YOU KIDS 66 II nuniinngnnnn S 1921 - 1' Q Il E ? The year 1919-20 saw our first year of football and strange to say, an all victorious team. This year we lost to Lawton, fstate championsj by a close score, and to El Reno iBig Ten championsj. The team was ably coached by W. L. James, an Virginia letter man. Duncan has always been a great basket ball town but had been forced out of the race the past few years on account of not having any gymnasium. The new high school, however, has a splendid gym and this year we had a splendid beginners team. They were coached by Ray Rider, letter man from Kendall University. The girls got a splendid start in basket ball under the leadership of Miss Ethel Shumate. Baseball had a rather unsatisfactory season due to a cold spring, shortness of material and lack of uniforms. The track team was seriously handicapped by the condition of the park, coupled with a cold spring. 35 .. -Y,W. 81 1,921 not -N Yr-,iQ 1 'N , a .51 X L fv Diff fff' -1 Aj- A-if f -fi W Nj .. ,Af ,,.. n , :Z-'51 'x ,-5 .Z-' 2 -R 1 1 i, .4 I7 ,5I,...,- 1 Q, .,, I .44 1 ', -. -.ff-p' c ff , f'h' ' Aj 55- . , -5 Z . .k I fl, F O O 'I' P R I N 'F S' I' W 70 1,921 F 0 0 T P R. 1 nr T 9 W W FOOTBALL SUMMARY Duncan 13 Marlow -- Duncan 0 Lawton -- Duncan 53 Waurika - Duncan 14 El Reno -- Duncan 16 Marlow -- Duncan 96 Opponents 71 1,921 tv QT.- Y 7-' T' O O 'I' D R J it ii 72 MURRAY FRENSLEY QCowboyJ Quarter Back-Weight 155 lbs.
