ADM. DONALD BRADLEY DUNCAN Admiral Donald B. Duncan Road is named for Admiral Bradley Duncan, who was born on Septem- ber 1, 1896 in Alpena, Michigan. Admiral Duncan, Vice Chief of Naval Operations when he retired in 1957, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1917. Upon graduation he was assigned to the USS OKLAHOMA, operating with the British Grand Fleet in World War I. In 1920 Admiral Duncan reported to the Naval Air Station Pensacola for flight training and was designated a naval aviator in 1921. He subsequently served as a flight instructor at the Naval Air Station Pensacola. During the course of his career. Admiral Duncan served with aviation squadrons aboard the AROOSTOOK, LANGLEY, WEST VIRGINIA, and NEW MEXICO and was an aide on the staff of Commander Battle Force aboard the CALIFORNIA in 1931. During World War II Admiral Duncan was ordered to command the Navy ' s first carrier escort, the LONG ISLAND, and pioneered the development of flight techniques from this new type carrier. While Commanding Officer of the Carrier ESSEX in 1942, he directed the ship in engagements which earned it the Presidential Unit Citation. He was a member of the staff of Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet, as Deputy Commander in Chief when World War II ended and his last post before becoming Vice Chief of Naval Operations was as Commander Second Fleet. Admiral Duncan was appointed Vice Chief of Naval Operations in 1951 and served in this assignment until his retirement. He retired from the Navy and resided in Pen- sacola until his death in September 1975.

THE JOB WAS CLEAR, THE CHALLENGE WAS SET, TO SAIL TO FAR OFF PLACES TO GO IN THE NAME OF FREE- DOM, TO SHOW A PIECE OF OURSELFS, OUR COUNTRY, AND A LIFESTYLE THAT SERVES AS AN EXAMPLE TO MEN EVERYWHERE THIS IS THE STORY OF ONE SUCH VOYAGE: USS DUNCAN WESTPAC 1982
