l, COMMANDER SYLAS DUNCAN, USN K Silas DUNCAN was born in Rockaway, New Jersey in 1788. On November 15th, C 1809, he was appointed a Midshipman in the United States Navy. He served in many of the United States' great warships from 1814 to 1824, including Independence, Hornet, and Guerriere. As Lieutenant, he lost his right arm during the battle of Lake Champlain when he was sent in a gig to order the American gunboats to retire. Despite concentrated fire from the enemy and his severe wound, he delivered the message. For his gallant conduct, he was publicly thanked by Congress. OMMANDER ROBERT LAKE TURNAGE Commander TURNAGE, of Grenada, Nlississippi, graduated with the Naval Academy class of 1952. He spent his first sea tour aboard USS IVIEREDITH lDD890l as Gunnery Officer. In October 1954 he reported to the Pre-Commissioning detail, USS FORT SNELLING lLSD-301, and upon its commissioning began a two year tour as Gunnery Officer and later as Assistant Engineering Officer. Commander TURNAGE attended U.S. Naval Post Graduate School in IVlonterey from July 1956 to July 1958, earning a BS in Engineering Electronics upon graduation. He returned to sea that year as IVlain Propulsion Assistant aboard USS PRINCETON lCVA-371 and lLPH-51. ln 1960 he was ordered to Newport, Rhode Island on the staff of COIVIDESDEVGRU 2 in the triple position of Squadron Operations, Engineering and Project Officer. Prior to reporting aboard the USS LEAHY lDLG-16l in December 1962 as Weapons Officer, Commander TURNAGE attended the Navy Guided lVlissile School, Dam Neck, Virginia during the fall of that year. From LEAHY he was ordered to the Pre-commissioning detail USS WORDEN lDLG-181 in February 1963 and became Weapons Officer on that ship until July 1964 when he was selected to attend the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia. Upon graduation from AFSC Commander TURNAGE was ordered to USS HENRY B. WILSON lDDG-7l, homeported in San Diego, for duty as Executive Officer, remaining there through early 1966. From lVlarch 1966 until September 1969 Commander TURNAGE was assigned to U.S. Naval Ordinance Systems Command in Washington, D.C. After his tour in Washington, D.C. Commander TURNAGE assumed command of USS DUNCAN lDD874l on 12 December 1969. From here he will go to USS CHICAGO lCG-111 as Executive Officer. Co Washington University. He is married to th mmander TURNAGE has a lVlaster's Degree in financial management from George I e former Rebecca Johnson of Winona, Nlisslssippi. They have two sons: Edwin, 12, and Jeffrey, 10, and one daughter, Terry, 11. The family will continue to reside in San Diego, California.
