SUPPLY DIVISIGN ln WESTPAC 1970, the Supply Department was charged with providing the supply support and essential services to maintain combat readiness, health, and morale. The disbursing personnel produced those eagerly awaited pay days, lining DUNCAN pockets with over S350,000 in cash during the deployment. In addition, travel claims advancements, and the 8M pay raise were translated into dollars. The ship's servicemen provided the laundry and barber services free of charge to the crew. The service- men's ship store gained over 335,000 in sales and produced 32,500 in profits for services and the ship's recreation fund, both record highs. The gally gang of commissarymen served over 135,000 meals to the crew, including several fantail barbecues, with a total dollar value of over S200,000. A special service was fresh pastry and bread daily to liven the daily fare. The highlight of the cruise was the surprise birthday cake for the Captain, consisting of a model DUNCAN on the high seas. The stewards pro- vided the meals and services to the wardroom. The storekeepers were responsible for the supply support to keep the ship combat ready. With operating funds of 345,000 over the six months, judicious ex- penditures kept the ship well supplied with everything from magnetrons to carbon paper, a demanding task in the sometimes lonely stretches of the Western Pacific.
