X f V if . use Umm 0.90121-874i SHlP'S HISTORY - USS DUNCAN lDDR874l DUNCAN is named aTTer Commander Silas DUNCAN, USN, who was born in Rockaway, New Jersey, in 1788. On 15 November 1809, he was appoinTed a Midshipman in The UniTed STaTes Navy. He served in many of The UniTed STaTes' greaT warships Trom 1814 To 1824, including INDEPENDENCE, HORNET and GUEPRIERE. His mosT famous acTion occurred during The BaTTle of Lake Champlain when he was senT in a gig To order The American gunboaTs To reTire. DespiTe concenTraTed Tire from The enemy, and alThough severely wounded, he succeeded in his mission. As a resulT of This acTion he losT his righT arm. For his gallanT conducT he was sub- sequenTly Thanked by Congress. On 1 March 1829 he aTTained The rank of Commander lMasTer CommandanTl. DUNCAN is The Third warship To carry The name of Silas DUNCAN. The presenT DUNCAN's keel was laid aT ConsolidaTed STeel CorporaTion, Orange, Texas, on 22 May 1944. She was commissioned on 25 February 1945. DUNCAN sailed from Norfolk on 2 June 1945 for The Pacific. ATTer visiTing San Diego and Pearl Harbor, she ioined CABOT lCVL28l for screening and plane guard duTies during The sTrikes on Wake Island on 1 AugusT. ATTer calling aT EniweTok, she conTinued To Okinawa To join The 7Th FleeT Tor paTrol duTy oTT The Chinese and Korean coasTs during which occupaTion Troops landed aT Tsing Tao, Taku, and Jinsen. DUNCAN conTinued her occupaTion duTy unTil 25 March 1946 when she sailed Tor San Diego, arriving on 28 April. For The nexT year DUNCAN Trained along The WesT CoasT. In May 1947 she deparTed Tor a five-monTh Cruise T9 WESTPAC Where She viSiTed Okinawa, Japan and China. On her reTurn To The UniTed STaTes, DUNCAN resumed WesT CoasT operaTions. On 1 March 1948 an explosion in lVlounT 53 killed Two men and iniuring 14, causing DUNCAN To puT 1019 I-OVIQ Beech fer VePeIlVS- UPON ISOIVIHQ Long Beach, she reioined The FleeT Tor Training unTil January 1949, When She SGIIGCI To VVESTPAC fOr an eighT-monThs' cruise.
