During our stay in the Gulf ot Tonkin, we were at General Quarters a great deal of the time. Here the Quartermasters assumed the role as the eyes of the ship, taking stations as the Lee Helmsman, Helmsman, and Quartermaster of the watch. A Navigating team was keeping the Captain informed as to the ships position and maintained the ships log, a minute by minute accvunt ot all the shi s act' . Th p ions e signalmen were busy receiving and sending tactical signals both by tlaghoist and by flashing light. They also assisted in manning the titty caliber machine guns.
