BY LARRY CASEY IF THERE IS a Cinderella team in the City league football playoffs it has to be Dunbar High school which finished in a- two-way tie with Fenger in the tough South section of the Red division. Wendell Phillips and defending champion Chicago Vocational were erlpected, to battle for sectional honors in regular play with Fenger not far behind. Dunbar was relegated to wind up among the also-rans. - So, what happens? Dunbar and Fenger turn the tables and finish withgidentical 4-1 records to share the title while Phillips 'and Vocational'amass 3-2 marks. DUNBAR WILL battle Englewood in Gately stadium, 103d street and Cottage Grove avenue, at 2:30 p. m. tomorrow in one of seven City league playoff tilts. Englewood finished' with a +1 record and tied with Lindblom and' Tilden for sectional honors in the South-White division. V We didn't figure we had me experience or depth to compete in our division this season, said Lou Tortorelli, Dunbar's athletic director and former grid coach who is helping Head Coach Ernie Thompson. We only had 13 letter winners back from a team that had a 213 ,record in-league, play lastf year, Tortorelli added.. Also, one of our outstanding, players ljTackle Aaron died in a freak accident and We had injuries to several key players. i TORTORELLI CREDITED the rise of the Mighty Men to rapid development. of several players and the team's devotion to winning. The kids worked hard and deserve all the credit. That 4-1 finish was no fluke. '-The maainspring in Dunbar's 'offense is Lawrence Tero, a swift, glue-fingered halfback-flanker. What can I say about Toro? Tortorelli asked. He can do it all. He's a team player, a good leader, outstanding runner and pass-catcher. He's one of the best. A 6-1, 195-POUND SENIOR, Tero led the Red-South section in scoring with 8 touchdowns and 3 extra point kicks for 53' points. V Dunbar has several-players besides Tero who go both ways, including Rickie Fisher, a 5-11, 220-pound senior fullback and defensive guard. FISHER'S MAIN FORTE on offense. is his blocking for Tero's end sweeps or protecting Quarterback Curtis Walker I5-10, 170-pound, seniorl when he passes. , The Might Men last appeared in the City league title game when they defeated Lindblom, 27-6, before losing to Mount Carmel, 37-0, in the Prep bowl. . f 11liis-,team is not 'quiteasi fast as theN1967 outfit, said Tortorelli,,f'but it's much more azgressivef'
