New ideas and new trends of thought and action are being developed. This is the spirit of Pro- gress that the 1970 PROSPECTUS has tried to capture. The purpose of this book is to emphasize in words and pictures, the spirit which has become a part of Dunbar. Let us say from the beginning, that to capture, to preserve and to recapitulate every movement which has special meaning is impossible-yet we dared. We are now presenting the happen- ings of 69-70 in this essay. W, x. fy It ,Hwy f ,ir f -.,.,N,.Wh Administration 37 Sports 85 Organizations 63 Seniors IO9 Mighty Dunbar Marching Band Our Mighty Dunbar Marching Band has been proclaimed by Dunbar - and sports field opponents alike as one, if not the best marching band in the city. Our band has been known to strike a tune and drive its' audience to near frenzy. Their dynamic uniforms are as striking as their ability to play. Led by bandmaster, Mr. Burgess Gardner, this inspirational ensemble of percussion and Wind instruments has han- dled the stands as the team has handled our opponents. A Dedication To Aaron Allen Had he Lived Aaron Allen I A senior in Mrs. Joseph's division, Aaron Chauncy Allen, would have been eighteenyears of age May 4, 1970. An outstanding student, Aaron participated in many special academic programs as well as winning many high awards in the sports field. An ardent football player, he probably would have played defensive and offensive tackle during the 1969 season. Though football was Aaron's most active sport, he was far from mediocre in track, having wonhonors in June of 1968 in city competition. Aaron also threw shot-put for the track team. Kind words should not just be given after fate befalls one but also during a person'slifetime. Aaron deserved and received kind words during both such periods of time. More students should be shaped in the mold of Aaron Allen, for he proved that success can be an all-around thing, in the classroom and on the sports field. It is befitting that the sports section of the 1970 PROSPECTUS be dedicated to Aaron Allen for he provided an inspiration to many students. In closing, the words of Coach Thompson, Aaron's mentor, will remain vivid for as long as the memory of Aaron Allen is carried ong He would have been a most commendable man through all walks of life - had he lived. He had a Dream Rev . Martin .-1 i Denise Bowman, Gerald Randall, Linda Jones, Joseph Carter, speak in mem- ory of Dr, M,L, King On January 15, 1970, We presented OPERATION BREADBASKET with a check of 500 dollars which was donated from the student shop fees. These are some of the familiar terms heard during Dunbar's ex- , citing football season. These are the sounds that led us to the playoff. We began the season slowly, but we later began to march in step losing only to Fenger in the regular season games and to Englewood in the playoff game. Our team was most outstanding. They proved this by ex- hibiting their ability to overpower most of our opponents, and we thank them for carrying us to victory. Next year we look forward to seeing our banner fly at Soldier's Field as it did in 1967. Auditorium Dedicated Mr. Norris speaks about the honoree, Mr. Campbell. A clasped hand for a pose. BY TOMMY KOUZMANOFF LAWRENCE TER-0 did just about everything but coachyesterday as Dunbar's Mighty Men upset wbndeu Phillips, last year's City ieaguefunner-up, 27-6, in a morning game before 3,000 in Gately stadium. Tero, the 1eague's- 165- pound, wrestling champion last winter who since has built himself up to 190 pounds for football, had a hand in all four Dunbar touchdowns-as he and his' inspired team- mates threw the South sec- tion Red' division race into a three-way tie. , It was ,Wendell ' Phillips' first league loss in four starts and the Wildcats, whose' ailing coach, Carl Bomier, left the hospital long enough to .perform his duties, now find themselves in a-deadlock at 3-1 with Dunbar and Fenger. FENGER MOVED into the title pict1n'e with a 270 romp cover Bggan ,in the Gately stadium afternoon games ' 1Fenger and Wendell Phil- lips will 'clash next Saturday,- with Dunbar meeting Morgan Park, as all 47 public school teams bringi their iregular schedules tor a close. The following week, they'll start their playoffs. ' ....Q4.fhla.4 Tero scored three times, on runs of 23 and 29 yards,-and on a scintillating 55-yard punt return. And, he booted an extra point for a total of 19. THE SWIFT. You could say that Tero also helped coach because he does carry out our- strategy on the field as a captain, 1 said Lou Tortorelli of Dun-. barg who has come' out of coaching retirement to help Ernie Thompson with' the coaching duties. BY LARRY CASEY IF THERE IS a Cinderella team in the City league football playoffs it has to be Dunbar High school which finished in a- two-way tie with Fenger in the tough South section of the Red division. Wendell Phillips and defending champion Chicago Vocational were erlpected, to battle for sectional honors in regular play with Fenger not far behind. Dunbar was relegated to wind up among the also-rans. - So, what happens? Dunbar and Fenger turn the tables and finish withgidentical 4-1 records to share the title while Phillips 'and Vocational'amass 3-2 marks. DUNBAR WILL battle Englewood in Gately stadium, 103d street and Cottage Grove avenue, at 2:30 p. m. tomorrow in one of seven City league playoff tilts. Englewood finished' with a +1 record and tied with Lindblom and' Tilden for sectional honors in the South-White division. V We didn't figure we had me experience or depth to compete in our division this season, said Lou Tortorelli, Dunbar's athletic director and former grid coach who is helping Head Coach Ernie Thompson. We only had 13 letter winners back from a team that had a 213 ,record in-league, play lastf year, Tortorelli added.. Also, one of our outstanding, players ljTackle Aaron died in a freak accident and We had injuries to several key players. i TORTORELLI CREDITED the rise of the Mighty Men to rapid development. of several players and the team's devotion to winning. The kids worked hard and deserve all the credit. That 4-1 finish was no fluke. '-The maainspring in Dunbar's 'offense is Lawrence Tero, a swift, glue-fingered halfback-flanker. What can I say about Toro? Tortorelli asked. He can do it all. He's a team player, a good leader, outstanding runner and pass-catcher. He's one of the best. A 6-1, 195-POUND SENIOR, Tero led the Red-South section in scoring with 8 touchdowns and 3 extra point kicks for 53' points. V Dunbar has several-players besides Tero who go both ways, including Rickie Fisher, a 5-11, 220-pound senior fullback and defensive guard. FISHER'S MAIN FORTE on offense. is his blocking for Tero's end sweeps or protecting Quarterback Curtis Walker I5-10, 170-pound, seniorl when he passes. , The Might Men last appeared in the City league title game when they defeated Lindblom, 27-6, before losing to Mount Carmel, 37-0, in the Prep bowl. . f 11liis-,team is not 'quiteasi fast as theN1967 outfit, said Tortorelli,,f'but it's much more azgressivef' Lively Crowd Don't Let Him Through Follow That Man 1 Bring Him Down That's Our Coach I 7 W I , . 4 fr-' r7,l ?g Varsity Jim Foreman, Lee Smith, Joette Hutton, Samuel Hall, Larry Lewis, Leighton McQuary, Herbert Hacthett, Edward Kite, Jeffrey Hatcher.
