Abraham Lincoln Today, people are burdened with a multiplicity of confusing problems. They are sometimes unable to cope with these apparently simple situations because their education is weak. Dunbar has opened up our minds to ways and means of coping with these problems. In our freshman year, we were very young and enthusiastic. We glowed with anticipation and overflowed with a thou- sand promise and plans, and we were eager to do or die. Our activities were few. Although many of us scarcely knew each other, our activities served as a bond which brough us closer. Endowed with the loyal tradition and championship spirit of Dunbar, we en- tered into our sophomore year with zeal and courage. We sensed the largeness of the task before us. Therefore, we began to adjust and develop our personalities to the fullest. Dramatics, music, band, pep assemblies, and trips helped us to ac- complish our purpose. In our junior year, we sought to learn what we needed to know by earnest ap- plication to our studies. This was the most decisive year because it was then that we decided about our future careers. Our senior year found us excited with the fact that now all our social and aca- demic training must be culminated into one fine and strong experience. We be- gan to plan our prom, our luncheon, and all the other activities that go along with high - school graduation. As we reminisce about the past four years, foremost are the happy occasions and varied circumstances that helped to shape our lives. These, we shall always remember. The haziness of the past has given away to a bright alertness and awareness. We have learned that not only is the employment of technical skills and the acquisition of professional knowl- edge necessary, but also that the develop- ment of solid character, self discipline and a pleasing personality are necessary to our economic and social success. Our class would like to express our thanks and gratitude to our director, fa- culty and advisors for their inspirational leadership in giving us a breadth of vi- sion, a philosophy of values and serious- ness of purpose which will be of para- mount importance in our later lives In bidding farewell, we leave with a great ambition-to be worthy represent- atives in the carrying out of the noble ideals and wholesome attitudes that we learned at Dunbar. A little more than four years ago we were permitted, ac- companied by our eighth-grade teachers, to visit the various classes and shops at Dunbar. The tours were conducted by Mrs. Jones, Mr. Harper, Mr. H. Johnson, and Mr. Renfroe. That was the day we grew up. We hoped against hope that our elementary-school records were such that the administrators at Dunbar would ad- mit us. We regretted the weak spots, and for some, there were many. We promised ourselves and our families that once ad- mitted, we would not cease our efforts until we had attained. We were accepted. Tempus fugitg-time flies. Four years have flown-and we have attained. For most of us, formal education will end and we will take our places in the various fields for which we have been trained. As freshmen we were gullible to every whim and fancy of the upper classman. A smile or fleeting glance would suffice. Bow-day, Christmas party, membership in some of the few clubs-these were our big moments. As sophomores we suffered but survived the usual let-down. Novelty had worn off, and the road ahead was long and winding. Then our soph- frosh football squad made the news. 67 Track. basketball, baseball, and wrestling roused us from our lethargy, and-soon we were juniors. Our social lives became more important. Skating parties, school dances, socials, fashion shows, modern dancing were time consuming. We were hosts and hostesses at the Senior-Junior Prom. Recognition continued. Competitive a- wards were claimed by members of our class for art and design, slogan and essay contests, honor-society membership, at- tendance, and participation in school act- ivities. College scholarships seemed pos- sible for a few. As we entered our senior year, the site for the new Dunbar Trade School was de- cided upon and funds were provided. We as seniors rejoiced for the students who would follow us to enjoy the beauties of the new building as we had grown to ac-- cept the hardships and inconveniences of the old. Senior activities seemed infinite in number and variety. The football sea- son found us defeated only after the semi-final play-off. College scholarships were offered to and accepted by fellow classmates, employment prospects were fairly promising, good fortune smiled upon us as the freshman class of Septem- ber, 1950, donned cap and gown to be- come the graduating class of June, 1954. lllN-E- - SENIORS Jack Adams Tailoring Band Hull Guard Willie Adams Automobile Mechanics liuskvtball lfoolbnll Drumutics Ollie Akin: Ari'hil1'vlural Drafting l'ivil Air Paalrol Cross Country I-'IWA Curtis Anderson 'I'aiIoring Fool ball Track Joanna Ammons Drvssmaking FIWA Mildred Anderson Drcssmaking FIWA George Bailey Radio Shop FIWA Robert Bailey Tailoring FIWA IAQ ,Lo , A-,tml Sylvia Bassett Office Practice Modern Dancing Captain Cheerleader Secretary 4B Class Barbara Beach Office Practice Craftsman Phillida Benniefield Dressmaking FIWA Dale Bivens Aviation Civil Air Patrol Harold Blackman Tailoring FIWA Marva L. For example I struck my head while doing so and suddenly found myself in the year 1969. Sylvia Vallier, President of the Inter- national Red Cross was assisting me to my feet.. Standing beside her were Vivian llunter and l.eola Brock, her assistants, wearing almnimim blouses and cast-iron pleated skirts a Mary Washington-Mar- guerite .Iackson creation, now fashion- able on lllars. They had just returned from Saturn by way of the lnt.er-Plane- tary Rocket System, operated bv An- thony Parker, Willie Adams and Daniel Bryant. While we were discussing old times, Alfred Coats and Leon Brown cruised by in their 1969 Command Only car, design- ed by Albert Crosby. This car requires no fuel and runs with only a command from its owner. We were asked by the fellows to attend the Pumpkin Ball Game. the latest sport, introduced by Allen Wat- kins, to replace football. Starring were Raymond Myles, Wilson Stocky, Richard Dixon. Eddie Gilchrist, and George Don- nell. This gaine was held at the Joanna Ammons Stadium, designed by Sherry Conway and built by the Ernest Chance -Melvin Chandler Construction Com- pany. Entering the main gate we saw Luthe- tas Saxon, Barbara J. Brinker. Marya Bonds. and Juanita Burns, MGM. star- lets. We proceeded to our seats. Sitting directly in front of us were Vogue Mag- azine's leading models. Maxine Graham. Odessa Dean, Doris Maddox and Patricia Daugherty. They were wearing fashions created by Nancy Williams and Shirley Manning. Their coiffeurs were originals of Yera Martin. Delores Martion and Earlee llutson, Refereeing the game were Joe Gales and Elisha Tillman. During full time we ate strange fruits imported from the planet Mercury by the Eugene Moore -Daisy Wilson-Charles Riley and Ben Manuel Importing House. Senator Robert Carter from Illinois, Secretary of State, Curtis Anderson, and National CIO President Elaine Taylor joined us. After the game we dined at Minnie P. Jones' Restaurant, on the corner of South .lames Woods Street. Entertain- ment. was provided by .Ioe Merriweather and llenry McDonald's Symphony Swing- ers. Star vocalist was Curtiss Perryman. During dimier, English Professor Frank Wade of Cleatus Royster University walked in accompanied by this Inter- nationally famous secretaries, llenrene Jones and Barbara Beach. During our conversation we learned that Theodore James, lLomer llurtz, Robert Lewis and Robert Lowe were now in the process of discovering a formula that would grow arms for Venus De Milo. There was also to be a dedication of the Ben Lee-Bertha Walker Dam. Guest speakers at the occasion were to be Mild- red Anderson, Albert Welch, and Georg- etta Tolbert. The guests included Sylvia Bassett, George Bailey, Sidney L. Ilill, and Ollie Akins. Later that night we received an invita- tion to attend the Popcorn Ball at the home of Elizabeth Hogan, Ambassador to Pluto. The following day we toured the Robert Bailey 'Iheater where socialites Harold Blackman. Walter Gilliam, Addis Cherry, and Gueterris Brown were spon- soring funds for the Doris Collins- Harry Cox Children's Home. Suddenly everything began to fade. When my vision was restored, I found myself on the couch in the Matron's Of- fice-eyerything had been a dream. 4 Al ,ba 'Z' .r , 2 Wh ,f',, X' V 4 X f 42 Q QQ ix Q, 3 yxr f f ,.s L xg f. 0 ..,. ,,,, f Sv 14 in M3 9 Aa fu X , - f ii if cg , j .4 4,5 sf X ,Q wx 'K W f 'Neff g , X .' C DUNBAR EVEN!NG TRADE SCHOOL After having completed a specified period of training, the student is given a certificate of verification of this training. It is not a diploma but rather a statement of the training given in a particular trade area. The value of this training lies in the student's being able to improve his economic status and to help supply the demand for skilled workers in this indust- rialized community. The Dunbar Evening Trade School program is designed for trade extension training of students who, because of the de- mands of their daily employment, seek to acquire those skills needed to qualify them for upgrading on the job, or the as- sumption of new or added job responsibilities. Through the facilities of Dunbar's shops, these student needs are met. EVENING SCHOOL 4 I.1-filo-1'ighI 1l'l'0lll row! KIIIIICI' mv K1-llvy, Viviun 'l'. Ilukvs, Anniv lmv Pznynv, Iclollv M.
