We wish to express our sincere thanks and deepest appreciation to our parents for the innumerable sacrifices and efforts they have made. In all our treacherous and uncertain years of growing up, they have aided, advised and stimulated us into becoming the young men and women we are. To ever keep this fact in mind, we are using this page in our book of conveying our sincere appreciation. 4 EDICATED TO. . Mrs. Julia B. Kelly Throughout our school years, we have been influenced by many persons. But of all the persons who have had a hand in our destiny, there is one that we shall long remember because of her wise counsel, patient understanding and thoughtfulness. In testi¬ mony of our gratitude and appreciation, we humbly dedicate this sixteenth edition of the Tiger to Mrs. Julia B. Kelly. As the years come and go, I hope your effort in this regard will serve as a cherish source of memory. I praise the parents too, who have faithfully and diligently worked hard to help make the pub¬ lication and editing a successful venture. May you always realize that all worth-while achieve¬ ments come as a result of time and effort well planned and used. Worthy achievements of a ne¬ cessity must be wrought by the combined work, ideals, and aspirations of all concerned. To the members of the graduating class, I extend farewell. I hope that you have attained a full measure of information; I also trust that you have learned how to think and how to live bet¬ ter. One main purpose of education is to teach you to think. By learning how to think, you are better able to make wiser decisions and discover things that are worth thinking about; moreover, you can put yourself in a better position for enjoying a happy life. Finally, to the members of the graduating class, I say in the words of Nicholas Butler: There are five tests of the evidence of education-- correctness and pre¬ cision in the use of the mother tongue; refined and gentle manners, the result of fixed habits of thought and action; sound standards of appreciation of beauty and of worth; a character based on these standards; power and habit of reflec¬ tion; efficiency of the power to do. I challenge you to use the above ingredients in your search for a successful and happy life. May the spirit of the Divine lead you. 8 Mr. Ezra C. Gilliam Principal Mrs. R. R. Redfern Secretary Mr. J. What an occasion that was! On that day, we started to make history, for we had a group of energetic, talented, and intelligent students starting a four year trek through high school. To help us get started off were three able advisors: Mrs. Ida Duncan, Mrs. Sara McLendon, and Mrs. Naomi Mitchell. Our first historic feat was our winning the title of Miss Dunbar,” with Delphia Henderson as our contestant. Our second historic accomplishment was Linda Beatty’s becoming the ’’May Queen”. We certainly made history in sports, for these figures were always in the headlines during the football season: Romus Jefferies, Lonnie Sifford, Andrew Harris, Marion Faulkner, George Heggins, Raymond Lomax, John Wylie, and Tommy Roberts. During the school year ’63 - ’64, we were vigorous Sophomores and continued to make his¬ tory. We were more accustomed to being high school students, but, in case of need, we looked to these advisors: Mrs. Mary Leazer, Mrs. Marion White, and Mr. James Pemberton. Making history for our class academically were Barry Reid, Jerry Wiley, Constance Wood, Ava Smith, Shirley Graeber, Eliza Seigle, Mae Frances Branch, Brenda Abel, Franklin Ingram, and George Parker. They were chosen because of their scholastic averages to be waiters and waitresses for the Junior-Senior Prom. Our class really accomplished a historical feat when we sponsored the first Sophomore Ball. Mrs. Mary Leazer was our inspiration and counselor for this affair. Our theme was The Night Has A Thousand Eyes.” The year was ’64 - ’65 and we were the mighty juniors. Our advisors were Mrs. Naomi Mitchell, Mr. Harry Koontz, and Mr. William Smith. Serving the Student Council were Jerry Wiley as Vice-President and Elaine Patterson as Secretary. Mary Scott, Minervia Patterson, and Barry Reid were representatives. We proudly elected Bary Reid as president of our very powerful junior class; Thomas Witherspoon, vice-president; ElizaSeigle, secretary; Minervia Patterson, treasurer; and Brenda Abel, reporter. We had the honor of entertaining the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Prom, using the theme Tender is the Night.” We were victorious in winning another Miss Dunbar” contest with Sandra Witherspoon as our contestant. Although not successful, but making a good showing for our class in the May Queen” contest was Elaine Patterson. History was still being made when Jerry Wiley, Barry Reid, Constance Wood, Ava Smith, Shirley Graeber, Eliza Seigle, Mae Frances Branch, Thomas Witherspoon, Brenda Abel, Franklin Ingram, and Elaine Patterson were chosen as marshals and ushers for the 196 5 commencement exercises. At last our wonderful year has come! We are now Seniors. We are under the supervision of Mrs. Julia B. Kelly, Mrs. Winifred Poe, and Mrs. Beatrice Davis. Our class won its third Miss Dunbar” title with Brenda Abel as our contestant. We are happy to end our school years by having representatives in every extra-curricular activity in the school. As we end our twelve years of schooling, we look back on these grand experiences with great pride and much appreciation. We feel now that we have gained the stamina that will enable us to meet the responsibilities and encounter the challenges of the future. But thanks faculty it’s time to face reality .... We enjoyed our twelve long years at Dunbar High, We’ll always look back with a sorrowful sigh; Those were the golden years and now we start to shed Our tears for our dear school to you we say adieu.
