THE 1964 TIGER’S BAR VOLUME XIV EDITORS . Otis Evans Betty Goodlett BUSINESS MANAGER Ethel Kelly inmii I iHMUi , -i ' M i M- -’ wiem i- - ' THE ANNUAL STAFF of TRIBUTE This Tribute was written by Homer F. Lucas, Post Staff Writer of the Salisbury Evening Post. It is being reprinted by special permission of the Salisbury Post. JOHN F. KENNEDY, A GREAT MAN John F. Kennedy was truly a great man. He was a just man. He was a man who believed all men were equal in the sight of God. He was a man of peace. He was a man determined, with all his soul and body, the ravages of war would never again befall mortal man. He was a man of love. He was a man born to riches. He was a man who loved the ordinary man, like you and me. He was a man of courage. He was a man who was the butt of ridicule and nasty jokes as he displayed his courage. He was a man of power. He was a man who never wielded, as history will evaluate, this power unjustly. He was more than mere man to the men of the free-world. He was hope, a symbol. He was a man who gave so much of himself to the people of the world. He was a man of principle. He was a kindly man. He was a man of easy formality. He was a man, above all, of magnificent heart. He was a man who has passed into a new world from which no traveler, but one, has returned. Butthe world which he loved and served remains. There are times in life when time stands still. Now is such time. The men of the free-wo rid, the men of love, the men of peace, and the men of courage are groping in darkness for the light. But the light is there in the principles and beliefs of John F. Kennedy, a truly great man. 4 5 CONTENTS Administration Faculty Classes Activities Advertisements Appreciation Life at Dunbar High for the class of 64 is finished, but the staff of the 1964 Bar has endeavored to recapture the tremendous number of important and interesting features of this life in pictures. We sincerely hope that as time marches on, you will be able to find it a pleasure and a joy to recall and to rediscover past experiences. To our patrons, business firms, faculty and all who contributed we take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks. EDICATED TO MRS. NAOMI MITCHELL The class of ' 64 hereby dedicates its annual to Mrs. Naomi Shuford Mitchell. For fifteen years Mrs. Mitchell has exemplified the high scholarship and citizenship that she has instilled into pupils. Her interest in students, her calm evaluation of each personality and her ability to uphold high standards are virtues we shall remember and revere. 7 ? DIRECTING SCHOOL AFFAIRS PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE ’’Look well to this day!” This is my exhortation to you seniors of 1964. As I sincerely con¬ gratulate you, I also earnestly challenge you. Search well this day and salvage from your journey here the good, the true, the real. For, my friends, we live in a very demanding age, an era seeking nothing short of the best. Avail yourselves of the opportunities and possibilities of this day. Carefully seek to bypass those experiences of doubt of squandering time. Begin now.Live to the height, breath, and depth of your being. Live fully! Open wide the windows of your souls and drink deeply from every noble experience and re¬ main active in the school of creating living. Keep sharpened the capacity to love the good, the beautiful, to understand and appreciate your fellow travelers. Cultivate the desire to be the best. There is no real master requirements. You only begin to build muscles of nobility when you strive to do more than that which is required. Create of life a quality and quantity beyond what is expected. Whatever your endeavor in life, do not be afraid of honest toil, of keen competition, for of such stuff the great tests are made. ”Our main business”, our late President, J.F. Kennedy re¬ minds us, ’’istoasknot what our country can do for us, but ask what we can do for our country.” Look well, therefore, to this day! My sincere best wishes to each of you. Ezra C. The Dunbar High School weekly assembly program serves as a period for both religious and moral guidance. It affords the student an opportunity to make public appearances. It is a time devoted to special announcements, pertinent information and observances of holidays and seasons. The assemblies introduce the students to prominent persons both locally and nationally. The pictures on these pages show the present governor of North Carolina as our guest speaker. All assemblies have proved to be stimulating and aimed toward the betterment and enrich¬ ment of the students. 14 - k ' -- _,, MUSIC Through participation in the band and musical organization, the students obtain, music wise, wholesome enjoyment, lasting benefits, broader understandings and keener appreciation. 15 ilA SCIENCES I I In General science we learn about weath¬ er, machines, atoms, types of energy and water. The subject matter is based on the everyday activities of boys and girls. Biology has a special place in the hearts of those who love to dissect animals. The classification of animals, plants and protists gives a headache to quite a few. In chemistry we wonder why the building still stands. New words are learned-valence, sublimation, ionization and precipitation. Physics, with its problems, as well as homework and vector quantity, is quite an experience. Incidentally, a multitude of pro¬ cesses of physics plays an important part in your life and influences you in many ways. 16 MATHEMATICS General Mathematics is planned to help students achieve two objectives: 1. To develop the ability to perform the fundamental operations in mathema¬ tics with a high degree of accuracy. 2. To stimulate interest in the subject matter and uses of mathematics. Algebra One 1. To prepare the students for further study in mathematics and to develop confidence in his ability to pursue such study. In Algebra II we develop new mathematical concepts as reasonable and useful extensions of previous work in arithmetic and elementary Algebra. Geometry enters into practically every¬ thing about us in our daily life - a knowledge of it is of importance to anyone who wishes to progress in a trade or profession and it gives us an opportunity of learning to appreciate and enjoy the nicer things of life. ___ .JIM COMMERCIAL EDUCATION All students, college bound or noncollege bound, can fulfill many of their interests, needs, and career goals throi h education for business. The courses offered in Com¬ mercial Education this year, Typing I, Typing II, Bookkeeping, Office practice, are set up as elective courses for all students from the tenth grade to the twelfth grade. Here you see a group of Bookkeeping stu¬ dents at work in their workbooks. This course places emphasis upon the application of book¬ keeping principles to business problems and decisions. These Typing I students are trying to develop their ability to operate and use the typewriter correctly and efficiently. 18 PHYSICAL EDUCATION The physical fitness of a nation influences greatly that nation’s future. The physical education program is de¬ signed to develop physical fitness, sportsmanship, team participation, leadership, alertness, and a wholesome re¬ spect for the human body. ENGLISH ■ i Information of what is going on in the English Classes can be gleaned from the con¬ versations among the students. The freshmen are heard reciting poems; sophomores are thrilled over the stories of Knighthood and, believe it or not, the boys are more courteous than usual; the juniors are heard reciting: So live, that when thou summons comes, etc; and the seniors are sure that: Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage. And then is heard no more. f I I I t I 1 20 FRENCH The pattern of normal French speech is very different from English, However, with the aid of our audio equipment, we put forth every effort to imitate the native by listening to discs, recording our voices on tape, reciting prov¬ erbs, playing games and singing French folk songs. J etudie Je francais. . Vous regardez le professeur. Mettez la craie dans la boite. 21 SOCIAL STUDIES iim This is our third year in World History by the media of T.V. Each student is keeping separate notebooks. Notes, notes, notes! Memorizing im¬ portant dates and facts, given by Mrs. Leazer and Mr. Moore, have kept us busy all year. Social Studies, in spite of all the dates, names, and facts that we must learn, helps us to appreciate our American heritage, as well as to serve as a guide for better citizens. 22 VOCATIONAL Girls taking home economics obtain preparation for their future role as wives and mothers by practicing domestic activities such as cooking, serving children, studying household economics, and decorating. Ultra¬ modern facilities offer every opportunity for preparation for home life in our increasingly automatic world. Since industry is an element of our basic culture, in¬ dustrial arts assumes the responsibility of enhancing and enriching the experiences of young people in this important phase of our industrial world. Therefore we try to instill within each student the practical value of the course, hoping that this general knowledge will- be helpful in the home, industry, agriculture, business, and the arts. The Agriculture Department at Dunbar provides stu¬ dents with up-to-date classroom instruction on subjects ranging from Asparagus to Watermelons as well as a well rounded Shop and Adult Education Program. Here we see a group of boys in a senior welding class being observed by Gilbert Winborne, Teacher of Agricul¬ ture. Other areas of Shop Instruction Small Motors.including Care and Repairs. Horticulture.emphasis on rooting and hand¬ ling plants. Electricity.program designed to teach adequate wiring and simple re¬ pairs to appliances and equip¬ ment. Plumbing.modern equipment is used as boys are taught to install and repair plumbing fixtures and systems. Woodwork.this includes phases of wood construction with emphasis this year on cabinet work. In addition, each student enrolled in Agriculture is re¬ quired to carry a supervised project. 23 ADULT EDUCATION One never gets too old to learn. Those who, for various reasons, were unable to re¬ ceive a high school diploma, are once more working toward that goal in the Dunbar Adult Class. 24 LIFE OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM Study Lunchroom Assembly Lounge 25 CUSTODIAN STAFF LUNCHROOM PERSONNEL Mrs. Creola Jennings Mrs. Cora Hobson Mrs. Catherine Archie Mrs. Janette Massey Mr. Paul Miller Mr. Franklin Smith Mr. Baxter Lynn Mrs. Mary B. Physically we weighed 103 pounds at birth. By participating in basketball, the student council, the band. Glee Club, NFA and NHA we grew and felt that at the end of the first year Dunbar had con¬ tributed a great deal to our growth. The greatest aid to our intellectual growth, besides our studies, were the honors we received in Math, English, Science and Citizenship. We worked wholeheartedly in preparation for May Day. We were thrilled beyond words when Theola Beatty was crowned May Queen for 1960-61. By the end of the year our weight had decreased by 5. The year 1961 saw us somewhat smaller physically but mentally more developed. Mr. Koontz, Mr. Pemberton and Mr. Smith were our advisors for our Sophomore term. It was during this year that Dunbar emerged on the football scene. What do we have to cheer about? The following boys: Isaiah C lesby, Otis Evans, Parnell Corpening, Gerald Poe and Quentin Parker helped to make this team and oh what a team. Ah, Oui; Les ' eleves we will never forget the French Ball with its beautifully decorated Eiffel Tower. To mark this special year we went on two exciting trips to Winston-Salem and Marrow Mountain. The year 1963 saw quite a few changes. We were developing mentally but our physical appearance was slowly decreasing. Our teachers and counselors saw that we had the complete schedule for mental growth. Our leaders were Mrs. Vails and Mrs. Poe. There were two social events to remember. The first was the Garden Party with the theme An Enchanted Evening. Everyone contributed to the gala affair. The other was when our boys won the in¬ tramural Basketball trophy. What an honor for us! Then came the sudden talk of beautiful gowns and charm school, for our Debs had emerged. As our junior year came to an end it found the jolly, jolly Juniors winning many honors in Scholastic and extracurricular activities. We were mature enough now to be seniors. More mentally developed than physically, because physically we dropped to 65 lbs. With the arrival of August, 1963 we foun d ourselves seniors. Our leaders were Mesdames J. B. Kelly and L. B. Davis. To help us develop culturally we visited Livingstone Col¬ lege for Senior Day and gained much information about our local higher educational facilities. Not only were we benefited culturally but it helped us socially, for we met many new friends. As the year progressed we continued growing mentally, culturally, socially but not too much physically. Even though the year is not over we feel that we are almost mentally, socially and culturally ready to depart. We have made history as a class at Dunbar High School. We feel that we have made a contribution to our school and community, and will pass on so that another class can be born. Ethel Kelly Class Historian Carolyn Perry 40 CLASS POEM Four years we have been together Bound by the chains of care Each year our hearts have grown stronger Now parting time draws near. The memory of Dunbar we will hold close With all the love heaven disposes Never thinking the happy times would last Thank you for those times long past. Among the things we shall hold dear ’’Dunbar” will stand out in our vision And we shall recall each year As life completes its mission. With hope, faith, God bless you we say On this our graduation day Heads up high and feeling so proud Waiting for our names to be read aloud. By Crystal Partlow CLASS SONG Dunbar High School we sing thee a song of praise. Remembering happy days, we pledge thee our loyalty. Dunbar High School may all we have learned to do keep every heart worthy to thee. All hail! All hail [ Our banner is waving above. All hail! All hail! We honor the school that we love. Dunbar High School let us sing this song to thee. For even in future years our love will always be. Dunbar High School has taught us what we know Our actions will always show we’re grateful to thee.
