THE 1! PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF DUNBAR HIGH SCHOOL East Spencer, North Carolina Volume XIII CONTENTS Dedication Administration Faculty PTA Council Advertisement Office Staff Classes School Activities Patrons FOREWORD Oh, high school days are happy days, and though the years may pass, still the memories of those days will linger on. And they become to you — The Gtolden Days of yesteryears. Between the pages of this book are captured some of the memories of those by-gone-days, teachers, classmates, and activities. Once more you will be present at the basketball or football games cheering the team on. The time is at hand; we must seek new lands; with mixed emotion we say farewell to high school days and to the home of the tigers, Dear Ole Dunbar High School. 2 DEDICATION This 1963 edition of the Dunbar is dedicated to Miss Betty McKee. As a graduate of Bar, she has rendered outstand¬ ing service to her Alma Mater as instructor of Commercial Education and as coach of the Girl’s basketball team. With pride and affection we the senior class dedicate the BAR to you, Miss McKee. 3 PRINCIPAL PRINCIPAL EZRA C. GILLIAM PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I wish to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to the sponsors of the Bar and the seniors of 1963 for the outstanding task you have done to make this annual a successful and worthwhile project. This book will serve as a reminder of past accomplishments and memories. Congratulations for the accomplishments you have made thus far. I am sure you will strive to be a credit to your school and yourself by using the training you have received wisely, and as you go out into the world, remember that no person was ever honored for what he received; honor was the reward for what he gave. May your future be planned and managed so that the important experiences of your life will bring you success, honor and happiness. Sincerely, Ezra C. Gilliam, Principal 4 GUIDANCE COUNSELOR CONGRATULATIONS SENIORS: You have received your high school diploma. This diploma is society’s way of recognizing the completion of a specific course of study. It is also an expression of faith and confidence in you to use what you have learned in such a way as to reflect honor upon yourselves and your country. You, your parents and friends have looked forward to this day ! As we rejoice over your achievement may we be mindful that this is the beginning. The beginning, we hope, of creative living. Do not become complacent. Be satisfied only in the pleasure of producing, no matter how small or large, something of value for your fellowmen. This is creative living. It is our hope that your high school education has been a challenge to you, that you are leaving Dunbar with a feeling of some degree of success, and that no matter whether you are desirous of furthering your education by attending schools of trade or college, pursuing homemaking or other endeavors, that you will find your schooling has provided a sound foundation for success and happiness. The first step made by our administration was to divide us into three sections. Our advisors were Mr. Harry Koontz, Mr. Jesse Corry and Mr. James Pem¬ berton. We were, by all means, inspired and all of us were determined to adapt to the ways and conditions of high school. We worked like eager beavers and played twice as hard. Glowing with the golden rays of pride and beaming with joy we elected our class officers. Fortunately, George Brannon, Roosevelt Ingram and Calvin Cockerl became our Presidents for the Fresh¬ man Homeroom Classes. The greatest honor of all was bestowed upon the Freshman Class that year. We were the first Fresh¬ man Class to have a student achieve the title of Miss Dunbar, in five years or more. Elaine Heath was crowned Miss Dunbar for the years 1960-61. Each member of the class worked deligently along with Mrs. Lois Heath- the mother of Elaine-towin such an honor for our contestant and for our class. Another achieve¬ ment was the winning of the intramural championship. Our class participated in a number of extra-curricular activities: Basketball, N.H.A., N.F.A., Band, Glee Club and the Cheering Squad. In fact, we were enthusiastic¬ ally a part of Dunbar's activities; however, we did not lose sight of our objectives-Scholarship-for many of us made the honor roll. August 1961. As Sophomores we were more accus¬ tomed to being high school students and became a more integral part of the school, its activities, and objectives. The second big step of the administration was to divide us into two sections instead of three. Our advisors were Mr. William Smith and Miss Cyphese Redfern. The Presidents of our classes for that year were Bertha Sullivan and Carl Simpson. During that year, many of us were trying to raise our scholastic averages. Betty Greenard, George Brannon, Calvin Cockerl, Elaine Heath, Jewell McKee, Roosevelt Ingram, Roderick Fitzgerald and Carolyn Dixon, were selected according to their scholastic averages as waiters and waitresses for the Junior-Senior Prom. Step number three was in order. We were Juniors, the year was 1962. Our advisors were Mrs. Winifred Poe and Mrs. Lavolia W. Vails. We had only two more wonderful years of High School to go ! We had an en¬ rollment of approximately fifty- seven students. Calvin Cockerel and Lonnie Kluttz were elected as Presidents of our classes. Our aim as Juniors was to maintain our scholastic average and to develop more in leader¬ ship. Again we were quite active in extra-curricular activities. The task of conditioning ourselves for our Senior year was a difficult one, but we realized that we were climbing the ladder of our educational goal and there was no need to fear. We had the honor of entertaining the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Prom. Our theme was April Showers . It was a night that will be long remembered by many and forgotten by few! As leaders, George Brannon was the Vice-President of the Student Council, Betty Green¬ ard, Roderick Fitzgerald, Elaine Heath and Carolyn Dixon were our representatives. The Marshals for the Commencement were George Brannon, Betty Green¬ ard, Calvin Cockerel and Carolyn Dixon, who were chosen on the basis of scholarship. The Ushers were Ruby Barton, Elaine Heath, Roderick Fitzgerald and Roosevelt Ingram. We realized during the summer vacation that our foot-prints would soon be on the sands of time and that we would soon complete the last step toward a hard- earned graduation. We are now Seniors under the guidance of Mrs. Julia B. Kelly and Mr. Jesse Corry. We are proud and are positively armed in dignity. We are facing our last year of high school. Yes! as we pause to lookback let us remind ourselves to look for¬ ward to new and great horizons and appreciations. Some of our activities so far have been Senior Day at Fayetteville State Teachers College, Fayetteville, North Carolina and Senior Day at Livingstone College, Salisbury, North Carolina. Since this is our last year of high school we are trying to excel in everything. George Brannon is the President of the Student Council, our representatives are Evelyn Abel, Lovette Gaither and our officer is James Massey. Our outstanding players on the Basketball teams are: Elaine Heath, Nellie Dav idson, Lonnie Kluttz, Richard Faulkner, and George Brannon. Other Seniors on the teams are Calvin Cockerl, Jewell McKee, Har- mond McClinton, Elizabeth Webb, and Lovett Gaither. During football season our football players were: Lonnie Kluttz, Calvin Cockerel, Charles Robinson, Ronald Roberson, Roderick Fitzgerald, Joe Jackson, Frazier Beatty, James Evans and William Atkins. The Seniors who are on the cheering squad are Patricia Mallet, Bertha Sullivan, George Brannon, James Massey, Robert Scotton, Roosevelt Ingram, Dorothy Hammonds, Betty Barnes, Foster and Ruby Barton. Together the girls and boys make a very good representation of the Senior Class. In the Miss Homecoming event each member of the Senior Class worked again with delight and our class contestant won second place. Our contestant was Bertha Sullivan. Our class President and editor-in-chief of the Bar is Betty Greenard, our co-editor-in-chief is Evelyn Abel. We have representatives in every extra-curric¬ ular activity in the school. In December we received our class rings. Our ring finger just would not stay in place! We selected our Bar staff and began to work on our annual. The years seemed to have flown by, yet the class of 1963 has terminated twelve years of schooling, how¬ ever, the journey is yet before us and time stands still for no one. To our principal, advisors and parents we leave our sincere appreciation for the patience, time and effort in helping us to a successful completion of our high school careers. May we undertake the responsibilities that await us with maturity and pride, each in his own way, and by his own loyalty uphold the name of Dunbar High School, his community and his race. Class Historian, Nellie Davidson 27 CLASS POEM Dear ole Dunbar is the name We’ll cherish with all our hearts, We’ll miss you, oh we’ll miss you The very day we part.
