Published By The Senior Class Of DUNBAR HIGH SCHOOL East Spencer, North Carolina FOREWORD High school days are over before you realize it. One moment, it seems, you are a trembling freshman; the next, you are a grad¬ uate. The Bar of 1962 offers us the opportunity to keep a specific year of our life constantly before us. Time, ’’that subtle thief of youth”, may thin your hair and thicken your girth, but if in the pages of this book, you recapture the emotions which were yours as a student; if in the years to come you live again your high schooldays through the medium of this volume; and you meet old friends again although their pictures are shadows, not substances; and if you find this book a treasure, then, the labors of the edi- toral staff will not have been in vain. We wish to offer our sincere thanks to patrons, businessmen, faculty, and other groups who have supported our project. CONTENTS Appreciation Dedication Memoriam Administration Faculty Seniors Juniors Sophomores Junior High School Elementary School Activities Patrons Advertisements APPRECIATION We extendour deepest gratitude and our sincere appreciation for the patient guidance, the time sacrificed and the kindness she has shown us through the years. With her charming personality, her friendly smile, and her words of encouragement, she has won the respect of all the students with whom she has come in contact. We take great pride in co-dedicating the 1962 Bar to you . . . . . Mrs. Winifred Poe. 4 DEDICATION We, the Senior class, take great pleasure in dedicating our annual to you, Mr. James A. Pemberton. Your warm smile and greetings are familiar to all who know you. Your contributions to athletics in our school, by coaching the first football team our school has had in twenty-three years, reflects great interest and cre dit to you. We the class of nineteen hundred and sixty-two, hereby dedicate this our Bar” to you. 5 MEMORIAM A life lived long is an ambition. A life lived well is an outstand¬ ing accomplishment. Lives filled with precious nuggets of humility, patience, loyalty and devotion often so penetrate the minds and hearts of those who are fortunate enough to commune with them, that an in¬ fluence too potent to wane lingers on after the physical span of such a life expires. As gloom surrounds us, let us revert our patterns of behavior to¬ ward the memory of our beloved departed teacher as a worthy and stimulating model, ever charging us to emulation. 6 ADMINISTRATION PRINCIPAL EZRA C. GILLIAM PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I would like to congratulate you and your sponsor for the outstanding job you have done to make this year's senior activities successful and worthwhile. It is indeed a pleasure for me to have the opportunity to express my greetings to you for having the desire and willingness to reach the goal you have attained. I hope the training that you have received will enable you to go out into the world and be a credit to yourself and your school. We, the members of the faculty of Dunbar High School, feel confident that you will adjust yourselves in this society, to be respectful, successful, and worthwhile citizens. To all of you, I extend my best wishes for a happy and successful future. Sincerely yours, Ezra C. Gilliam 8 Mr. C. C. Erwin Superintendent Mr. J. C. During her high school career she was an honor student, a mem¬ ber of the Student Council, a member of the girls’ basketball team, a member of the Math Club, and a member of the Dramatics Club. Her smile, her vivacious personality and her fighting spirit which she exhibited as a member of the basketball team, kept her going, in spite of the ravages of disease. We wish for her a speedy recovery. M 15 SENIORS Name: FRANK EDWARD ANDERSON Nickname: Geech Ambition: Commercial Artist Activities: Hi-Y, Football team, Driver Educa¬ tion Club. The students came from Dunbar and Granite Quarry Elementary schools. Our class had three sections, of which Mr. Koontz, Mr. Corry, and Mr. Dungee were ad¬ visors. We selected as our presidents, Diane Allison, John Miller and John McCullough. After we had become accustomed to our new environment, we engaged and excelled in both scholarship and athletics. Patricia Davis was elected treasurer for the Student Council; our freshman girls won the class tournament championship and Bonnie Evans scored high in the Miss Dunbar contest. As we entered our sophomore year, it was evident that we had obtained a grip on ourselves and our activities. Our advisors for this year were Mrs. Redfern and Mr. W. Smith. John Miller and John McCullough were again selected as our presidents. Ruby Tillman won 2nd place in the Miss Penny Queen” contest and Sallie Sullivan was crowned Miss May Day”. Dreafus Jeffries proved to be more popular at the polls than Norris Griffin to win the seat of secretary for the Student Council. Those students who were selected to serve as waitresses and waiters for the prom on the basis of their scholastic averages were Willie Jean Boyd, Freddie Irvis, John Miller, Roberta Lyles, Diane Allison, Ruby Tillman, Norris Griffin, and John McCullough. In our junior year, we were still broadening our scope of knowledge and activities. We were under the firm but friendly guidance of Mrs. Poe and Mrs. Vails. The two sections com¬ bined to select Dreafus Jeffries as our class president. Freddie Irvis and Willie Jean Boyd were chosen to run for the Student Council Vice Presidency. Of the two contestants, Freddie was triumphant. Freddie Irvis and Willis Jean Boyd took the intercollegiate examination and received scholarships to Moorhouse and Bennett Colleges, respectively. We put forth our best efforts in our final tribute to the seniors, the prom”. The theme for this gala event was Dancing on Bubbles”. We danced to music furnished by the Elroccos”. Seniors at last! We had reached our crossroads of life. We were receiving our reward for the past years of work. Our advisors for this year was Mrs. Julia Kelly and Mr. Jesse Corry. Robert Cockrel was elected class president. In October, we observed senior day at Livingstone College. This proved to be a very en¬ joyable event. We toured the campus, ate a delicious meal, watched the Bears” prove tri¬ umphant over Paine College, and ended the day with a social. Back again to normal activities, we chose John Miller and Geneva Addison as editors of the Bar. Geneva was also the editor of the school paper. Both of these projects received hard work from both the editors and the other members of the staff. Some of the outstanding senior girls were selected as big sisters”. This club, of which Ruby Tillman was president, was composed of ten girls who stood as examples for the other girls in the student body to follow. Mary Douglass was selected as Dunbar’s New Homemaker of Tomorrow” as a results of the score she obtained when the senior girls were given the Betty Crocker test. By winning this contest, Mary became eligible for the state and possibly the national contest. February 24, we went to A T College in Greensboro for their senior day. We were di¬ vided into groups of our particular interests and were briefed about the fields we were inter¬ ested in. After a delicious lunch, we toured the college campus before returning home. Feb¬ ruary 27, Homecoming, although we did not win, Geneva Addison placed 2nd. Now, we must say good-by to our dear home. We leave our thanks to the advisors and our parents who have helped us thus far. Dear ole Dunbar, Dear ole Dunbar, Dear ole white and blue, no matter where we wander, we'll always think of you. 24 Class Historian, Willie Jean Boyd CLASS POEM We've spent a lot of years in studying Waiting for a certain day, But what the future holds or brings, We must wait 'til the month of May. -2- We’ve been a very close class Like the birds of a feather Moving not too slowly nor too fast But we were always together. -3- Now the days are moving fast We’ll soon say our good-byes; For all good things can not last. Though it brings tears to our eyes. -4- To all our parents and preachers We bid you Godspeed, Especially to you our teachers. For you’ve helped our every need. Sallie Sullivan 25 SENIOR CLASS SONG TUNE: HE I Now the time has come for us to say farewell To our friends and teachers who have been so swell. We have tried our best to work in every way, We’ll no longer fret, for time has come, this is the day. Our past years in school are ones we’ll hold very dear To our Alma Mater we will always cheer. But as we depart with memories now we’ 11 cling To your good deeds and what the future brings. II This chance comes in life-time only once you know Dear Ole Dunbar High it’s time for us to go. To our fellow classmates we are sad to say. We’ll no longer see each other day by day. But if in the future we should meet again. Life will have more meaning and we’ll still be friends. So as we depart the best of luck to you. We’re leaving now, so long, farewell. Adieu.
