The students came from Dun¬ bar Elementary and Granite Quarry. Our advisors were Mrs. Naomi Mitchell, and Mr. Harry Koontz. We worked like beavers, but played twice as hard. Beaming with pride we elected our class officers. Fortunately, Joyce White and Ella Miller became our Presidents for the Freshmen Home Room classes. Our class was exposed to an array of extra-cur¬ ricular activities: Basketball, N.F. A., N.H, A., and Cheering Squad Although we came in third in the Miss Dunbar Contest, we en¬ joyed competing with the other classes. This year was our first day of major class events which was a trip to Linville Cavern. We spent the day sight seeing, eating, meeting people and taking pictures; a day we will never forget! August 1958, with Mrs. Elenor Holmes and Mr. William Smith as our advisors, our title was Sophomore. This was a year of trying to succeed . The Presidents of our class this year were Lula Barbour and Larry Poe. This year, many of us were trying to raise our scholastic averages. Shirley Jim- merson and Ronnie Neeley ran for Penny Queen and King. They won second place. Lorene Anderson, Edna Davis, Ella Miller, Joyce Wnite, Larry Poe, Royal Kennedy, Wallace Davis and Willie Davis were select¬ ed according to scholastic averages as wait¬ resses and waiters for the Junior-Senior Prom. In the Miss Dunbar Contest, Edna Davis won second place. Billie Noble was a very active member in the N.H.A.; she was a delegate to the National Convention which was held in Atlanta, Georgia; she was the first member from Dunbar School to ever attend this convention. Thenwe were Juniors, the time was 1959. CXir advisors were Mrs. L. V. Vails and Mrs. W. P. Poe. We had only two more wonderful years of School. We had an en¬ rollment of approximately sixty-six stu¬ dents. Larry Poe and Wallace Davis were elected as Presidents. The task for final refining ourselves for our Senior year was a difficult one. We had the responsibilities of the Junior Senior Prom. Our theme was Hawaiian Cruise . It was a night unforget- able! Lorene Anderson was Vice President of the Student Council. Earlene Faulkner and Larry Poe were class representatives of the Student Council. Marshals for the Commencement exer¬ cise were selected from the Junior Class by their scholastic averages. They were Lorene Anderson, Ella Miller, Edna Davis, Shirley Jimmerson, Larry Poe, and Albert Ruff. At the end of the year, we realized more strongly than ever our need for a good education and the acceptance of responsi¬ bilities. The big moment arrived in 1960! We were now Seniors under the guidance of Mrs. J. B. Kelly. We were proud and posi¬ tively radiating with dignity. We were about to face the last year of High School. As the Graduating Class of 1961, we at¬ tended Senior Day at A T College in Greensboro on October, eighth. The follow¬ ing month, November twenty-fourth, we at¬ tended Senior Day at Livingstone College in Salisbury. On Veterans Day, we were ac¬ companied by Mrs. J. B. Kelly, Mr. David Butler and Mr. Jessie Corry, to the Veterans Hospital to tour the many attractive and ed¬ ucational buildings of the Hospital. Since this is our last year in High School, we are trying to excel in everything. Lorene Anderson became President of the Student Council. Larry Poe and Mildred Ingram are our Representatives. The greatest honor of all have been bestowed upon the Senior Class . Brenda Stout was crowned Miss Homecom¬ ing for 1961. Each member of the senior class worked diligently to win such honors for our contestant and our class. Walter Garrison and Wallace Davis are outstanding players on the basketball team. Other seniors on the team are Larry Poe, Gorden Witt, and Charles Hoover. Two of our Senior Girls are also showing skill on the Basketball team. They are Brenda Stout and Edna Davis. Shirley Jimmerson and Claude are very active on the Cheering Squad. Our class President for this year is Larry Poe. Our Editor-In-Chief, Rubye Jeter and Assistant Editor, Collins, Mc¬ Daniel. We have terminated our twelve long years of High School. The goal that we have longed foi is here; we must leave our dear ole school and classmates. To our Principal and Faculty we leave our gratitude and sin¬ cere appreciation for their patience, time and effort in helping us to a successful com¬ pletion of our Hieh School careers. Class Historian Billie Noble 18 CLASS POEM Now we are Seniors and must depart, But we'll never forget those who gave us our start. Our parents, our teachers, have all labored with care. We'll always be grateful with memories to share. Always work hard to conquer obstacles That may ever block your way. And if ever your burden seems heavy. Steal away from the crowd and pray. Though the road was rough and rugged, We still strived to do our best. Although some were lost by the wayside. The persistent ones stood the test. Our old Alma Mater that we love so true, Du nbar Dunbar dear white and blue. What happy years with so much to gain. So God bless you all until we meet again.
