CLASS HISTORY In August, 1954, a large group of boys and girls from Dunbar and Granite Quarry Elementary Schools made their first appearance in high school. We were ready to uphold the dignity and honor of Dear Ole Dunbar, to boost for it, and work for it. We were divided into two sections, 9-A and 9-B and our advisors were Mrs. Mitchell and Mr. Koontz, Our class was able to hold the Miss Dunbar title fcr three consecutive years. This was the year we realized that the class possessed two great qualities- leadership and ability. August, 1955, as sophomores, we turned our tnoughts more to high school life, and became a part of the school and its activities. Our class was out¬ standing in extra-curricular activities. Stella Cole¬ man, Barbara Archie, Hazel Stout, Ethel Jones, Mary i Kelly, Calvin McCullough and Louis Wilder were ac¬ tive in sports. Many of us obtained high scholastic averages and were developing more in leadership. Our Junior year was superb. We were thrilled with becoming juniors in the fall of 1 956 . Our sectional teachers were Mrs. Vails and Mr. Murray. As the months rolled by, we felt more secure for we were no longer afraid of reaching the top. As juniors, we maintained our high scholastic averages and leader¬ ship, Ethel Jone s was e 1 e c t e d vice president of the S tudent Council. Clara Addison and John Roseboro were elected to represent both junior classes. During the mid-term, we were busy preparing for our most exclusive social event of the year, The Junior- Senior Prom. Everyone was happy and gay as they danced with their guests to the music of the I. J. Olds Combo, in the setting of Fairyland Romance. Wc had representatives in every club in the school such as the: Big Sisters club,N.H. A., Dramatic club, Basketball teams, Commercial club and the choral group. As Seniors of '57, we were given the Drivilege to attend Senior Day at Livingstone College, Salisbury, N. C. We were accompanied by our advisor, Mrs. Kelly. We also attended Senior Day at Greensboro, N. C. and were accompanied by our advisor, Mrs . Kelly, Miss Matthews, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Dungee and Mrs. Vails. Still forward as we march, we will strive, seek not to yield. We realize as Seniors under the guidance of Mrs. J. B. Kelly, that we have almost accomplished the last goal, toward successful, hard earned, gradua¬ tion. - Yes - we have come over the hill, looking for the light, only to remind ourselves to look forward with new light and appreciation. Still forward as we march, it's up to us. The goal we seek is there. Mary Kelly Clara Addison 29
