Class History At last, we the senior class of 1959, have reached the peak of our high school days. No longer will we be able to roam the halls of our dear ole Alma Mater as a class united together. As we make our last tribute tc Dunbar let us take an adventure through our past. When the fall of 1955 rolled around, we as freshmen entered the high school department of Dunbar. The class was composed of students from Granite Quarr y and Dunbar. What a group of freshmen we were, seventy- two in fact. Not only were we large in number but we had the ability of leadership in numbers with many new scholastic potentials awaiting us. Under the guidance of Mr. Harry L. Koontz and Mrs. Naomi Mitchell we were divided into two groups with Beverly Tillman and Clarence McKee as class presidents. By the mid-term we had settled down, we were no longer wide-eyed, eager adventurists, but students with a determination to get ahead. The honor roll by no means gave us a scare, rather it gave us a dare. We didn't intend to be lef t out of any activities in the school. But who would have ever dreamed that Demetrius Evans, Jacquelyn White, and Lorene McCuthen would be cheerleaders? ! When the basketball season drew near, many of us attempted to make the team, but we were not successful. Our can¬ didate for the Miss Dunbar Contestwas Beverly Tillman; although she came in third, we were proud of our fresh¬ man class and its determination not to give up but to keep on trying. Margaret Jeter was elected Treasurer of the Student Council of our group. This also gave us a great honor. Realizing that we were now in Senior High School, we, as sophomores began to plan for a more honorable year than our first one. We were again divided into two groups. Mrs. Winifred Poe and Miss Ruth Holmes were our advisors. The safety patrols were re-organized during this year. Margaret Jeter, Marian Poe, and Frances Hackett were very active in helping the students carry out our school policies. This was a great year for us when Robert Wiley, Robert Henderson, Joshua Drafton, Walter Roseboro, and Clarence McKee were very active on the basketball team. What a group of enthusiastic sophomores we were. Another honor was given to us when Marilyn Moser was chosen as Miss N. H. A. She won over three other competitors. A pep squad was organized under one of our advisors Miss Holmes, several students who were active enough to become members were: Ida Davis, Annie Corpening, Marilyn Moser and Beverly Tillman. Margaret Smith was our contestant in the Miss Dunbar Contest, again we came in third. Lillie Mae Burnon from our section was chosen as secretary of the Student Council, and Demetrius Evans and Frances Hackett were chosen as representa¬ tives. Marilyn Moser, Jacquelyn White, Beverly Till¬ man, Margaret Jeter, Robert Wiley, Clarence McKee, and Larry Sturdivant and Ronald Irby, were chosen as waitresses and waiters for the Junior-Senior Prom. Our participating in many new activities did not keep us off the honor roll, however, many times we led it. In the fall of 1957 a year that we had long awaited was now beginning. This was our Junior year. Realizing that many obstacles lay awaiting us, we became united again with Mrs. Flornnie Davidson, Mrs. Lavolia Vails and Mrs. Ester Marianeaux as our advisors. This was the year that was going to prove a trying one for us. No longer were we looked upon as green horn and unsophisticated sophomores, but ambitious Juniors. Be¬ cause of scholastic maintenance Lillie Mae Burnon, Margaret Jeter, Dorothy McGuire, Doris Seigle, Clarence McKee and Robert Wiley were chosen as Junior Mar¬ shals. To every junior the prom is the most important high-light. Our theme was Stairway To The Stars. What a beautiful arrangement it was! Everyone was dancing to the music of Carver High School Jazz Band. Our Junior year was also filled with thinking of music coming from the band, under the direction of Mr. Clyde Dungee. We had four majorettes representing our class, they were: Carolyn Johnson, Margaret Smith, Frances Hackett and Marian Poe. We also had four girls from our class who were chosen as letter girls for the band, they were: Dorothy Hunter, Marilyn Moser, Beverly Tillman and Jacquelyn White. We were represented in the various clubs in our school. Because of the magnifi¬ cent playing of Robert Wiley, Joshua Drafton, Clarence McKee and Jackie Jones, the double A Basketball District Championship Award was captured. Two members were chosen on the all state team, Joshua Drafton and Jackie Jones. Robert Wiley received a trophy for the most valuable player. With the future creeping upon us and high school life almost over, the Senior Class of 1959 was organized and united under Mrs. Julia Kelly. In the fall of 1958 we saw a glimpse of what college life is going to be. We made two trips, one to Livingstone College and the other to A T College at Greensboro, N. C. Senior life began as a big job for we had a new building to begin our senior year in. Clarence McKee was one of the speakers at our dedication of the new building, also Marian Poe. We now realized that leadership was one of our best talents. Clarence McKee was established as president of the Student Council; Beverly Tillman became president of the Safety Patrols; with Margaret Jeter, Robert Wiley, Jacquelyn Wh ite and Clarence McKee taking active parts. Because of the determination to succeed and the ability to play ball our present basketball team is the best in the double A Conference. It is an honor to us because four senior boys are on the team. Two of whom received awards for their spectacular playing. They were named on the All State team both in the district tournament and in the State tournament which was held at A T College in Greensboro, N. C. They were Robert Wiley and Joshua Drafton. Honor is also given to Clarence McKee and Robert Henderson, and to the other boys who were on the team. I am sure that without their help we could not have gone all the way. That is why I say don't give up but keep on trying and perhaps your chance will soon come. Now that you have been taken on an adventure through our past, we bid you farewell. Beverly Tillman 27

0€ l V t p . i i - - - Our Prayer O, God to thee we humbly come With gratitude and thanks in our hearts For this a great day For us has been set apart To count the blessing we have gained During the past Twelve years, Some were gained with joy and laughter Others through pride and tears. Bless each of us dear Father As we onward travel in life, Help us to work, help us to choose All in life that is right Guide us Dear Lord in the upward path, Steer our minds and our thoughts, Some contribution help us to make For the time we long have sought. As we leave this golden institution Let our lives be meaningful Help everyone to take his place In this busy-growing world. Teacher and preacher some of us will make, Maybe a doctor or nurse or two, But however, and whatever we pray For loads of success in all we do. Last but far away from least For our parents and teachers we pray A very special, special blessing In making this our happiest day. Bless all of those who has contributed In some way great or small Our friends, neighbors, and fellowmen Lord bless us all. Amen
