HV MEMOQXAM EKXZABETH COOPER 7923 - 7939 HXSTOEV OF THE CLASS OF 7940 AY yellow and red leaves, new friends, strange halls, different teachers, more books and homerooms on the third floor--we were Freshmen- remember? A dance floor, smiling, friendly Sophomores, shy and nervous, we the Frosh of Dumont High, were their guests at the Freshman Reception-re- member? Our first final assembly, Sad Seniors with all of life's unknown trials con- fronting them, jubilant, carefree Freshmen, with three years of happy High School life still to come-for next year we would be Sophomores-remember? Two months later-still the same old leaves, but, oh, much nicer! Now we were the silly Sophomores! As a prelude to our first social triumph, we held dancing classes in the gym, for all those wishing to perfect the hardest steps. And then, came the great night, when we proved to all, that we knew how to sponsor social events. Yes, we gave those little Freshman a wonder- ful time. lWe had fun tooli We were losing our shyness, now, becoming an integral part of dear old Dumont. The steering wheel of our class was placed in the capable hands of John Schultz-under his guidance and his leadership we were dauntless. You surely remember that! The next year we entered with fervent hopes for the success of our Junior Class-they were easily realized. We were blessed with a Midas-like touch, everything we undertook turned to gold, we became the school capitalist, we were successful. Our resources grew until our coffers were bursting with Junior Class money. That year, '39, our star rose to new heights in the star-studded sky of school activity. Our smaller constellations were many, but our greatest comet was the Prom-it flashed through as the grandest in a long series of great dances-remember? Upperclassmen de luxel Mighty superior Seniors! Traffic squad posts, peanut sales, Christmas Ball, Card Party, and our Senior Play-we sponsored them all. They were all big successes--remember? Reveries staff meetings, Class Executive Board meetings, Senior Play rehearsals, Holidays, Visiting Days-The day of the Blizzard of '4O when we all stayed at home-these are just a few of those little intricate pieces that worked themselves into the soon to be completed jig-saw puzzle that was our high school life. , And then, all too soon, the final acts of our drama as Seniors. Com- mencement, and then the next day when we were the sad Seniors, and others the carefree jubilant Freshmen, in our last final assembly in Dumont-re- member? Of course we remember! What comes next for us lies in the lap of the Gods, but we've had our good times, wonderful times, together. Times we'll all always remember. Dear Norma, A new musical has opened on Broadway, and I thought we could get together to see it This Friday night. The play, oddly enough, is called Class Reunion. lt seems almost fitting for us of the Class of i940 because this play was written by Madeline Fagan, and Margaret Occhiena and Jack Coan have the leads. l met Margaret while having dinner at Claudia Badini's swanky supper club, and she told me all about the play. lt is hilariously funny, as you will guess when you hear that Julius Kling is the Gag man. The dance routines will be led by the new dance team of Frank Hanson and Audrey Anderson. incidentally, the manager of the chorus girls is none other than Ray Livingston. She told me also that the scenery and costuming are to be superb, for Lillian Ritzheir-ner, Richard Styverson, and Dot Rich are making elab- orate plans. Alvin Thrun has written six new hits for our play which in itself should make it a success. l simply couldn't wait to read last night's paper to see what the critics had to say. l almost forgot to be enthusiastic over their praise when l read some of the bits about first-nighters. lt seems our ever-famous Connie Rast laughed the loudest and longest over Julius's jokes, and Mayor Jones, acting most undignified for an official, passed remarks at the chorus girls while Bill Albert, the mayor's right-hand man, slept peacefully on. Write as soon as you can and let me know if you can make it for Friday. Sincerely, IRENE. Forty 511455 PQOPHECV January 5, l95O. Dear Irene, l surely will come to see this new production you've written so much about. lt was grand hearing about our old pals again, especially since they've become so well known. However, you city slickers aren't the only ones to reach the top in the Class of '40, for we Dumontites are making head- lines tool Last night l went to the Annual Star-Starlet night in old D. H. S. and I happened to sit in the same place we used to reserve for our gang. Re- member? lt really seemed like old times. Ellie, Margaret, and Lorraine sang the same song they did for our first Starlet night, for as you remember, it was then that they first started as a trio. Dick Carmelich and Herb Schwartje were called in to say a few words, now that they are so famous in pro-football. Our shy little Dick strutted across the stage in a snappy new outfit, while Herb had to be roused from his usual slumber. l observed that Don Broker, his usual jolly self, enjoyed Richard Dew- hurst's soap box oration immensely. By the way have you read about the new reducing diet Don has just perfected? lt's really done wonders. During the performance l noticed that Johnny Schultz, our famous lawyer, and Bill Lawrence, our well-remembered fashion plate, seemed to be enjoying Evelyn Robertson's operatic renditions as much as l. During the intermission, l met Luther Demarest, and believe me, lrene, he's still the same old Lutherl He was proudly parading around handing out cigars for he is running for Congress in the coming election, The remainder of the program was very delightful and on leaving for home, l couldn't help being pleased with our Class of '4O. Thanks a lot for the invitation to see Class Reunion. l'm attempting to round up the gang and we'll meet in the lobby at eight, V Love, NORMA. OF CMSS OF '40 E, the Class of l94O, do humbly bequeath to you these virtues, idiosyn- cracies, eccentricities, and the like, developed from four years of hard work. To The Junior Class: The privilege of occupying the first seats in assembly, even though we sometimes have to strain our necks to see. The joy of getting out of class on the first bell to gab, much to Mr. Seigenfuse's dismay. The high and mighty feeling of teaching the underclassmen on Senior Day. The suspense of waiting one week to see if you got that certain part in the Senior Play. The fun of Chemistry Lab, where we try not to run up a bill for all the things that we broke during the year. The worry of how to make enough money to pay for the Reveries. Our faculty advisers who, though it was sometimes hard, bore with us during the year. To These Individuals: Jeannette Hess and Evelyn Robertson leave their recipe for making notes sound like silver bells, to anyone who would like to try. Dot and Gong leave their harmonic relation to Ellie and Russell. Ray Livingston takes that bow tie with him. Bill Lawrence leaves those snappy color combinations to Ralph Bogert. John Schultz leaves his ability to argue with Mrs. Petersen to whoever would like to try it. And yet I hesitate before I leave my Alma Mater dear. Four years within thy stately walls I have been dwelling here with thee. I learned more than a book can teach, No volumes teach sincerity. The threshold lies beneath my foot, I stand in awe of what I see. The world outside is large and great, And ev'ry road is new to me. One road may take me straight to fame, Another to prosperity, But still I puzzle, for I seek One bringing happiness to me. Contentment never comes from fame. It comes not from prosperity. But in a smile, the wealth that's found Is indispensable to me. At last I take the longed-for step, And on one route my eyes are cast. But neither time nor space can take My memories of four years past. By Barbara Hayne. Forty-five JUNE MAD FLORENCE RYERSON and COLIN CLEMENTS ECAUSE Penny Wood is merely June Mad , situations and plot were evolved and worked out in a clever enough way to prove this comedy a success both nights of its short but successful run . Presented by the Senior Class, April 26 and 27, it was played to appreciative audiences by thirteen members ot the class of l94O and coached by Mrs. Westervelt. Penny and Chuck Harris are happy until a college killer-diller robs Penny of her heart and her contentment, she forgets Chuck and his glider in her efforts to impress Roger Van Vleck in a strapless dress. However, her plans are thwarted when glamorous Juliet Harris comes home, thoroughly a Woman of the World-who knows how to do it . Poor Mervyn's heart is broken, and Milly Lou gains renewed hope when Julie lets him down, but she is destined to go around vainly loving Mervyn 'cause he's so beautiful l Julie's successes hurt Penny, but when Chuck's plane crashes, under the strain of worry tor him, she discovers that he and his glider are worth more than cosmopolites who play the accordianf' Forty-six is ER W W 6,59 f il.
