DULUTH is also unique in having a helicopter flight deck built above her well deck, providing a tactical advantage by adding the capability of lifting troops, supplies and equipment for movement to the forward objective area. Her versatile design allows her to contribute to all phases of the Expeditionary Maneuver Warfare. DULUTH's most distinctive feature is her well deck, a large floodable docking area inside the hull of the ship. The ship ballasts down which in turn floods the well deck with enough water to enable landing craft to depart or enter the ship through the stern gate for loading or unloading. Located forward of the well deck is the upper X lower vehicle storage area which holds most of the embarked troops' heavy equipment such as tanks, tracked amphibious assault vehicles QAAVJ, jeeps and trucks. At the same time troops and equipment can be loaded via helicopter from the flight deck. 2 USS DULUTH LPD 6 1 1 1 1 ' FACTS Length Beam Full Displacement Full Draft Speed Fuel Capacity Diesel Aviation Ship's Power Ship's Company Officers Chief Petty Officers Enlisted U.S. Marine Corps Officers Staff NCOS Enlisted 569 feet 105 feet 16 912 tons 21 8 feet 20+ knots 750 000 gal 217,000 gal 4,800 amps 40 24 360 71 21 833 FUN FACTS Phone Cards Sold Sodas Sold Red Bulls Sold Crew Laundry Washed Incoming Mail Outgoing Mail 1,800 216,00 16,800 96,000 lbs 41,469 lbs 13,351 lbs USS DULUTH CL-87 The first DULUTH was a 10,000 ton Cleveland class light cruiser, commissioned in September of 1944.
