He served as Electrical Officer, Main Propulsion Assistant, and Assistant Operations Officer, attaining his Surface Warfare Officer, Engineering Officer of the Watch, and Tactical Action Officer qualifications. During this tour he completed two deployments to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operations DESERT STORM and SOUTHERN WATCH. In April 1999, he transferred to Destroyer Squadron TWENTY-SIX in Norfolk, Virginia, serving as Combat Systems Officer.
