URW RD 28 July 1989 DULUTH. It's not just a job, it's an adventure. The following pages chronicle the exploits of the Amphibious Assault Ship DULUTH and her crew and embarked marines and sailors during a rigorous five and a half month deployment to the Western Pacific. Leaving family and friends DULUTH sailed into an area of the world where the interests of the United States are paramount and our friends and allies in need of reassurance and support. Participation in four major amphibious exercises and eleven port visits to five countries by DULUTH sailors and marines contributed to the high visibility U.S. presence in the region. This book is deceptive in that it cannot accurately portray the long periods of boredom interspersed with brief periods of intense activity that are inherent to sea duty. These active periods provide the best copy and therefore represent the bulk of this cruisebook. DULUTH's activities were exciting, professionally satisfying and just plain fun. For these readers who experienced this cruise first hand this book will serve to keep the memories fresh. For those without first hand experience, this book will enable you to share a small portion of the lives of the men of DULUTH during their deployment, January 12 to June 19, l989.

i DEDIC TIO This cruise book is dedicated to two separate groups. First, to those of you who make up the crew of the Navy's finest fighting ship, to remind you of our successful and adventurous deployment of the Western Pacific. Second, to those of you at home, who displayed unwielding devotion and support to our men under difficult circumstances, to show you why you made the sacrifices, why you spent months at home without your sailor, and what we were able to accomplish during that seemingly endless period of time. The Navy is required to defend the freedoms that many Americans have come to take for granted over the years. Our forefathers fought selfishly to make this country our own, we must maintain that sovereignty. Today though, it is much more. There are many people all over the world who have never experienced freedom. We have taken on the responsibility to show we are willing to help, and that we will be there in time of crisis. All of us must make sacrifices, but in an all-volunteer force it is only those who cherish the greatness of our nation that are willing to take on the burden of protecting it. You of DULUTH are an exceptional group of men, not only willing to serve your country, but to do so with pride, professionalism and an unparalleled degree of perfection. It has been my honor and pleasure to have served with you. Sin , J. . OW ii. .,u, ,..i,,-,,i.,i,cl.,-.mil so V
