FGRWARID WESTPAC! There is no other cruise like it. It has many different meanings for people who are in the Navy and their dependants. For the young at heart, it means adventures to come in faraway places. For those with loved ones, it means seperation for a long period of time. In any event, we all departed on our voyage with the knowledge that the mission we were to carry out was a necessary one. WESTPAC 84-85, afforded us the opportunity to visit such ports as Hawaii, Yokosuka,japang Hong Kong, Pataya Beach, Thailand, The Republic of The Philippines, and Korea. Many of the crewmembers and embarked personnel took advantage of the discounted tours in these ports which were made available through the ship's Chaplain. - Some memorable events during the deployment included the ship's 19th birthday, the doing away with beards in the Navy as of january first, and the Christmas Familygram video that almost never came. Captain Kenneth R. Barry was born in Washington, D.C. Upon graduation from Yale University in 1960, he was commissioned in the Navy. After commissioning he served as Damage Control Assistant on USS Marshall CDD-676j. He then served successive tours as Engineering Officer on USS Hanson CDD-832D and USS jenkins CDD-4475. In 1967, after Defense Intelligence School, Captain Barry was assigned to Headquarters North American Air Defense Command. In 1969, he returned to sea on the Staff of Commander Cruiser Destroyer Flotila Seven as Flag Secretary. He then became Executive Officer USS Forrest Sherman CDD-931j. In 1973, after a year of language study, he served as Assistant Naval Attache, American Embassy, Helsinki Finland. From 1975 to 1977 he served as Executive Officer on USS England CCG-22j. From 1978 to 1981 he served successive tours as Commanding Officer, USS Agerhlom QDD-826D and USS Fort Fisher QLSD-409. In 1981, he was assigned as Chief Staff Officer, Commander Amphibious Squadron Three. He reported from duty as Chief of Staff, Commander Amphibious Group One. Captain Barry's awards and decorations include the joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal and the Battle Efficiency Ribbon. His two children, Kenneth and Stephanie, attend the University of Southern California.
