FGRWARID WESTPAC! There is no other cruise like it. It has many different meanings for people who are in the Navy and their dependants. For the young at heart, it means adventures to come in faraway places. For those with loved ones, it means seperation for a long period of time. In any event, we all departed on our voyage with the knowledge that the mission we were to carry out was a necessary one. WESTPAC 84-85, afforded us the opportunity to visit such ports as Hawaii, Yokosuka,japang Hong Kong, Pataya Beach, Thailand, The Republic of The Philippines, and Korea. Many of the crewmembers and embarked personnel took advantage of the discounted tours in these ports which were made available through the ship's Chaplain. - Some memorable events during the deployment included the ship's 19th birthday, the doing away with beards in the Navy as of january first, and the Christmas Familygram video that almost never came. But the crowning achievement of the cruise came with the awarding of the Squadron Battle r ,
