CRWA I V ,. .i,. Deployment, 'It's a word that means-many things to many people - challenges unknown, exciting foreign ports, strange cultures, long hours, seperation from family and slow mail. Wihatever it meant to the men of Duluth, May 4th, 1983 found us on our way to do the job, wherever arid whenever needed. ' l E p g . , . ,D And needed we were. After completing six major Amphibious exercises from Hawaii to Somalia, Duluth was called to support the Multi-National Peace Keeping Forces in Beirut, Lebanon. For thirty days Duluth did the job, providing logistic support, acting as a search and rescue platform, serving as helicopter refueling station and being ready for whatever came next. There was no better ship for the job. e - r y , The coveted Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Award and Squadrdn Battle Efficiency are a testament to the men of Duluth, recognizing their professionalism and dedication. l , w In short, Duluth proved itself as the finest ship in the United States Navy. It was a good cruise. ' l s l

' a A From December, 1960, to February, 1963, Captain Hedley was assigned as Damage Control Assistant and Second Division Officer aboard the USS Tanner CAGS-151. He was thenassigned-as Damage Control Assistant on the USS Hammerberg until june of 1963. Captain Hedley then attended Naval Destroyer school until December, 1963. In January of 1964 Captain Hedley 1: ' was assigned as Operations Officer on the USS Massey CDD-7781 untiljune, 1965, when he assumed command of the USS - Limpkin CMSC-1955. A I . Q , 1 ' I H , A . Captain Hedley served as Assignment Officer at the Bureau of NavalfPersonnel- fromjanuary, 1967, tojuly, 1969. In August of 1969 he attended the Naval War College, and oe year later assumed duties as Executive Officer aboard the USS Brooke CFFG-lj. From February, 1972, to April, 1974, Captain Hedley served as Aide to Chief of Naval Education and Training. In june of 1974 he assumed command of the USS Alberr'David CFF-10501, and was transferred in April, 1976, to Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, where he served as Combat Systems Officer until September of 1978. Captain Hedley was assigned to Surface Operations, Commander Cruiser Destroyer Group Five, until he assumed command of the USS Duluth CLPD-61 on December 21, 1981. Captains Hedleys' awards include the Meritorious Service Medal Ctwo starsl, the Navy Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal Ctwo starsj, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Battle Efficiency , Ribbon, -and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. . , I V Captain Hedley and his wife, Pat, and two children, Paul David and Patricia Marie, reside in San Diego. ll F V , 7 , .
