Captain Grimes gretqqgaeeg June 3, 1955, receiving a bachelor of science degree and an commission. He then received orders to flight training at Pensacola, after earning his wings in March 1957, was assigned to Patrol S'cfuadrbFi'ft FORTY-NINE lVP-491 for four years. Following this tour he became a flight instructor in ASW aircraft at VP-30 in Jacksonville, Flat In November 1962 he reported to Washington, D.C., where he became the personal aide to Vice Admiral Schoech, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations lAir Dept.j In 1965 Captain Grimes served with Air Anti-Submarine Squadron THIRTY-SIX IVS-361 Air Group 58, aboard USS Randolph ICVS-151 as Administrative Officer. He' also served aboard USS Kearsarge ICVS-331 with VS-29 Air Group 53 as Administrative Officer and Training Officer while taking part in one seven-month Vietnam deployment. In 1967 he entered the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, Graduating in 1968. During the same period he earned a Master of Science degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. He reported aboard the US S Hancock ICVA-191 in August 1968 as Aircraft Handling Officer, participating in two eight month Vietnam deployments. In October 1970 Captain Grimes served with the Operations Plans division on the staff of the Commander Naval Air Force Pacific, NAS North Island, California. He then reported to Training Squadron TWENTY- SEVEN LVT-27j, where he commanded until May 1973. He reported to the US S Midway ICV-411 on July 6, 1973 as the Operations Officer. He served in that billet for twenty months, and then assumed duties as Executive Officer for fifteen months. Captain Grimes assumed command of the USS Duluth on November 13, 1976, and completed a Westpac deployment on April 27, 1978. Captain Grimes wears the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medala National Defense Service Medal, Distinguished Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Medal, Vietnam Service Medal lfour campaign starsl and the ,Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry lUnit Awardj. Captain Grimes is married to the former Dreda Watson, of Pensacola, Florida. They have one daughter, Catherine Grace. V A I. . .-.
