USS DULUTH LPD-6 WESTPAC DEPLOYMENT APRIL 10, 1967 — DECEMBER 15, 1967

Page 6 text:

OUR SHIP DULUTH is the last fightmg ship built by the New York Naval Shipyard, or Brooklyn Navy Yard, builder of many of the Navy ' s most famous ships. Christened on the 14lh of August 1965 by Mrs. Bruce Solomonson, DULUTH was commissioned on the 18th of December 1965, exactly two years after the laying of her keel, and was completed at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on the 2nd of June. She is named for the city of Duluth, Minnesota, and is the second Navy ship to bear the name, the first having been a Cleveland Class Light Cruiser (CL-87) which saw service during the Second World War. fhe white star surmounting the shield on the ship ' s insigne is the North Star, representing Minnesota ' s motto: L ' Etoile du Nord. The shield with diagonal band containing five stars is a duplicate of the center of the Great Seal of the City of Duluth. The choice of blue and red as dominant colors of the insigne symbolizes the Navy-Marine Corps team concept basic to am- phibious operations.
