' MtoN USS DULUTH LPD-6 WESTPAC DEPLOYMENT APRIL 10, 1967 — DECEMBER 15, 1967 OUR SHIP DULUTH is the last fightmg ship built by the New York Naval Shipyard, or Brooklyn Navy Yard, builder of many of the Navy ' s most famous ships. Christened on the 14lh of August 1965 by Mrs. Bruce Solomonson, DULUTH was commissioned on the 18th of December 1965, exactly two years after the laying of her keel, and was completed at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on the 2nd of June. She is named for the city of Duluth, Minnesota, and is the second Navy ship to bear the name, the first having been a Cleveland Class Light Cruiser (CL-87) which saw service during the Second World War. fhe white star surmounting the shield on the ship ' s insigne is the North Star, representing Minnesota ' s motto: L ' Etoile du Nord. The shield with diagonal band containing five stars is a duplicate of the center of the Great Seal of the City of Duluth. The choice of blue and red as dominant colors of the insigne symbolizes the Navy-Marine Corps team concept basic to am- phibious operations. Officers and Grew USS Duluth LPD-6 Fleet Post Office San Francisco Dear Captain Price and Men: On behalf of the Duluth Chamber of ComTnerce and our entire coinmunity, I take great pride in presenting your ship vjith this Recognition Plaque, inscribed with our tribute to the USS Duluth — Ambassador for the City of Duluth. As you probably are aware, the plaque was presented by proxy June 5 at a special ceremony in the Duluth Naval Reserve Training Center. Lt. ' Cmdr. Robert Carver, comriander of the Duluth unit, acted on behalf o£ you men in presenting the insigne plaque from you to Duluth Mayor Ben Boo and then receiving this Recognition Plaque . It was regretable we could not present you this small honor in person at the recent ceremony but perhaps at sometime in the future .-erne of our citizens may have the fortune of visiting your ship, and perhaps some of your men might well be visiting D-aluth in future years. There is, to be sure, much we have in cormion— and not in name only. Please convey to all the officers and enlisted men the best wishes from ' all of the 105,000 residents of the ity of Duluth.
