FOREWORD THIS SMALL VOLUME IS NOT EXACTLY AN ANNUAL, NOR YET A HANDBOOK. IT HAS TWO PURPOSES: TO RECORD VALUABLE INFORMATION AND TO AFFORD PLEASURE TO THE GROUP OF MEN AND WOMEN WHO MAKE UP THE CLASS OF 1950 OF DUKE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE. REGRETTABLY, SOME OF THE PICTURES QFUR- NISHED BY VARIOUS CLASS MEMBERS, ALASU ARE SO POOR THAT ANY RESEMBLANCES TO THE LIV- ING COUNTERPARTS ARE PURELY COINCIDENTAL. AND SO WE PRESENT IT. WE HOPE YOU LIKE IT. STAFF Ea'11or-ln-Chzff ..,... .,.........,.. I B Ezliforizzl ,-Ixxixlufitf. Bright Covington, M y Douglas Rucker, M g t R lx flrlist and Art Editor .,,,............ GREETINGS TO THE CLASS OE 1950 NE of the greatest pleasures of teaching in a medical school is in seeing your progress from the bewilderment of the Hrst year to the sophistication of seniors. Never in your careers will you be as conscious of knowing as much medicine as you will be immediately after you have passed Part II of the National Board of Medical Examiners. From that time forward your knowledge will decrease, probably because you will find, to paraphrase Iosh Billings, that so many of the things which you thought you knew ain't so. This deflation of knowledge is particularly rapid in your generation with its numerous diagnostic, and especially therapeutic, discoveries. All that our faculty has contributed to your development was: Hrst, to select you with the greatest care, because it is impossible either to convert a weak student into a sound physician or to spoil a good student, regardless of the type of teaching, and second, to try to make you think. Most of you came to medical school expect- ing to be taught. An occasional student never gets over it. How- ever, I am sure that all of you who are portrayed in this book realize that you had to learn instead of being taught, and that it was not a four-year but a life-time program. All of us enjoyed your being here. We hope that you will often return, and trust and expect that you will continue your careers as successfully in the future as you have started them in your course at Duke University School of Medicine. WILBURT C. DAVISON.
