During the 1970's and early 1980's, it was ac- cused of being a forum for artistic ex- pression at the expense of an accurate representation of Duke students and their experiences. In 1983, we have at- tempted to present Duke University as it is experienced by the members of the student body. In so doing, we've used all the artistic ability at our disposal to cre- ate a book which, although hardly tra- ditional in the high school sense, as- pires to be truly representative in scope and outlook. Of course, the Chanticleer is, and always will be, an art form. This year, we wanted to produce a book which provided a historical record of the year at Duke, using artistic expression to tell the story. History is certainly an important part of our work. The Chanticleer is un- doubtedly Duke's most permanent pub- lication, and we must therefore produce something which will be meaningful years down the line. The fact that the yearbook sits on the shelves of nearly 6000 alumni isn't enough for us; rather, we envision a book that is really worth dusting off in ten or twenty years. Our staff wants you to be able to remember the soccer team's rise to national pow- er, the first annual Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival, and the April 18th snow- storm that had us all shaking our heads in disbelief. The years we spend at Duke are unique for each of us, and the 1983 Chanticleer is designed to help us re- member the times we treasure most. It is unfortunate that the Chanticleer cannot document every experience of every student. Instead, we've tried to create a book which will stimulate each member of the Duke community in a unique way. Although every student isn't in the yearbook, we believe that, given a little individual imagination, the pages that follow will make you think, feel, laugh, reflect and, most of all, re- member. The 1983 Chanticleer is an ar- tistic, but not overly unorthodox, ex- pression of the personality and quality of University life as a whole, and it is our hope that it will be valued by students — both now and in the future. We hope you enjoy it. —The Editors The 1983 Chanticleer Volume LXXI Lewis A. Borofsky, Editor-in-Chief Copyright 1983 by Lewis A. Borofsky and the 1983 Chanticleer. Students started trickling, then flooding onto campus. That painful, exciting process of unloading got officially underway as over 1500 Dukies moved into “expanded rooms; according to Barbara Buschman, we were more overcrowded than ever before. Speaking of numbers, SAT scores of the new freshmen show them tied with the class of 1983 as “the brightest ever. SEPTEMBER Dukies spent a first week settling in and establishing a routine — a process that for freshmen involved getting photographed for meal cards and learning their way around, for upperclassmen meant figuring out all the housing changes and re-connecting with old friends, and for everyone meant standing in the long lines at the bookstore and sweating through Drop Add. It didn’t take long, though, for activity to start on campus. By the second week, classes, publications, DUFS, sports and most other activities were in full swing. Duke’s soccer team, ranked 11 in preseason polls, opened its season with a victory over NC Wesleyan despite the recent loss of goalie Boris Hide. The team continued the season — losing another player, Marlon Robinson, but winning their next seven games, including a victory over 1-ranked Clemson. By that time, Duke had succeeded in raising their national ranking to sec- ond, behind only San Diego State. As DUAA announced to the Chronicle that sports must be 'excellent” to sur- vive, the football team beat Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia in their first three season games, Duke's men's tennis team swept the Big Four tournament in Durham, and the swim team, which along with the fenc- ing team was threatened with elimination, was support- ed by over 1500 petition-signing students. September saw several minor changes at Duke. The Chronicle published its first issue of Voices, replacing last year's Aelous. The Bryan Center's Boyd-Pishko Cafe announced that the hours from 12-2 were for cash- only customers. Dr. Barbara Morris of Student Health announced her intentions to distribute birth control in- formation to students confidentially, in opposition to Senator Jesse Helms’ stand. In the basement of the Bryan Center, the glass-enclosed craft center opened with facilities for silkscreening, photography, weaving, and other art media. The Coffeehouse held its grand opening in the East Campus Post Office building, the first-ever Duke Video Yearbook was made available to the community and construction began on the Nello L. Teer Engineering Library. Several controversial issues also surfaced. As stu- dents lined up to get their $2 NC-PIRG rebate, funding questions arose and students wondered whether or not they should have to contribute to this organization invol- untarily, through their activity fees. A surge of DUI cases troubled University officials and students, and an Alco- hol Awareness Task Force was created on campus to combat the problem. The PCB protest in Warren County came to Duke with a Warren County resident speaker on HI the quad. Earlier, several Duke alumni and graduate stu- dents were arrested in a PCB protest demonstration. More unrest was created when Freewater Films showed the X-rated In the Realm of the Senses in the Bryan Center film theater. ASDU's major focus this first semester was on the problem of overcrowding in residence halls, while the Board of Trustees saw race relations as the top campus concern. The Black Student Alliance stated its goals for the year as creating better mutual understanding be- tween blacks and whites, and emphasizing cultural ex- change. In addition, a pro-PLO group formed on campus, and the Chronicle reported the setting up of a Duke-lsrael Political Education Committee. Major Speakers pre- sented John Anderson in Page Auditorium, and the Go- Go's and A Flock of Seagulls appeared in Cameron. As the month ended, fraternity rush began, the re- opening of the Hideaway remained uncertain, and stu- dents looked forward to good weather for Oktoberfest. OCTOBER The beginning of the month brought the traditional Oktoberfest celebration, this year named the Fall Folk Festival and held behind the Bryan Center. DUFS claimed a monopoly on all Oktoberfest food, supposedly to prevent botulism caused by improperly prepared or preserved food. The festivities included Phi Kappa Psi’s celebrity auction, the highlight of which was the sale of the 1942 gold-plated Rose Bowl Trophy for $10,000. After their tenth straight victory, the Blue Devil soccer team was named 1 by Soccer America magazine and the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America. The team then won another game and tied Maryland. The Chronicle declared the team out of their slump as they won three more games, ending the month with a 15 -0-1 record. Duke football's first loss of the season was to Navy on Parent's Weekend. They were then defeated in two more games by Virginia Tech and Maryland. The basketball team started practice on Friday the 19th, the opening day of Duke's first-ever fall break. New housing rules threatened to take away fraternity sections that were not 90% filled by frat members. The- ta Chi fraternity made the headlines, charged with sex- ual misconduct as a result of an anonymous letter re- ceived by the Chronicle. Fraternity officials denied the charges and the group was cleared of all allegations by Public Safety and the administration. Performances this month included Gallileo, pre- sented by Duke Players, and a concert by the Duke Symphony Orchestra. Mike Cross appeared in Page, and Major Speakers presented Alan Cranston and Abbie Hoffman. Duke stores removed all Tylenol from their shelves following the Chicago Tylenol deaths, President Terry Sanford initiated student-faculty lunches in Von Canon Hall, and a PCB symposium was held on campus to promote awareness of the Warren County controversy. In addition. ASDU's check-cashing service was okayed and plans made for it to go into operation at the end of the academic year. NOVEMBER In November, female undergrads and NC-PIRG spon- sored rape awareness activities. A week-long slate of Nuclear Awareness activities included a convocation entitled Solutions to the Nuclear Arms Race. The soccer team's 17th game of the season ended in a tie with Virginia, and the team remained 1 for the third consecutive week. The Blue Devils ended the regu- lar season with three more wins, tying Clemson for the ACC title. The NCAA soccer tournament began with a Duke victory over South Florida. Their next win was over Clemson, on Ken Lollas last penalty kick following an overtime. After beating George Mason, the team pre- pared to advance to the final four. Homecoming Weekend brought a victory for the foot- ball team over Wake Forest, amid festivities such as Lip Sync in Edens Quad, the Gong Show on Main Quad, a Chariot Race before the football game, and the black fraternities' Homecoming Step Show in the Jordan Cen- ter. The football team also beat Georgia Tech this month and lost to NC State. Their real victory came in the last game of the season — a 23-17 win over UNC, Duke's first win over Carolina since 1973. Fans rushed onto the field at the final buzzer — tearing down the goal post, passing it through the stands, taking it up to the quad, and then placing it in front of the Chapel. After his sec- ond consecutive winning season, football coach Red Wilson was relieved from his position because, accord- ing to Athletic Director Tom Butters, he’d taken the pro- gram as far as he could. Chris Castor, Philip Ebinger, Ben Bennett and Robert Oxendine were named to the All-ACC team. The Blue-White scrimmage was held in Cameron, after which the basketball team won their first two sea- son games while starting three freshmen. Duke basket- ball announced the signing of 7'2 Martin Nessley from Ohio. Lancaster dorm claimed the Intramural football title, and the swim team opened possibly its last season. Hoof 'N' Horn opened its musical season with “A Fun- ny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Broadway at Duke featured Ben Vereen in Concert in Page Auditorium. Karamu presented A Raisin in the Sun, and the Modern Black Mass Choir performed in Page. Cable 13 added Nightly News at 10:30 and a morning exercise program to its repertoire. Black Solidarity Day was observed this month with the theme Recognizing our Community Interests and Objectives. In the ASDU presidential election, Bill Bru- ton was elected to succeed Shep Moyle after a run-off against Victoria Lehr. In early November, 1982 editions of the Chanticleer were distributed from a van parked in front of the Chapel steps. Noise problems on campus surfaced for the first time, and Dean Cox stated that they were due to the residential changes this semester. Quiet Hours” were set up — excluding 5 P.M.-1 A.M. on Friday, 1-1 on Saturday, and 1-6 PM. on Sunday. Freshman Luis Ferrer died on the 15th of the month after a fall he suffered on campus. Student Health was questioned for possibly misdiagnosing his problem when he visited there after his fall. DECEMBER The traditional Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony started off this month, complete with Santa Claus, hot chocolate, cookies, carols, and a speech by President Sanford. The men s basketball team lost three consecu- tive games in December, but the women’s team won their third, fourth and fifth straight games. The soccer team beat the University of Connecticut in the NCAA semi-finals before thousands of Duke fans who over- filled the stands, lined every fence, and hung from trees around the field. Tom Kain, Mike Jeffries, and Joe Ulrich were named All-ACC; Joe Ulrich won the Hermann Award for outstanding player in college soccer; John Rennie was voted Coach-of-the-Year. The team lost its only game of the year to the University of Indiana in the NCAA finals in Fort Lauderdale after the longest NCAA playoff game ever: 159 minutes, and eight overtime per- iods. Football players Chris Castor and Robert Oxendine were named All-America, and DUAA named Mississip- pi's Steve Sloan to succeed Red Wilson as head football coach. The Board of Trustees proposed a new $6 million residence hall to be located next to Cameron, but ASDU opposed the new dorm, saying the administration should reduce housing problems by lowering enroll- merit. As Duke students expressed dismay over finan- cial aid cuts and their consequences, the Board of Trust- ees increasd next year's tuition by 9.2%. WDUK was granted an FM license this month; Duke Players presented Uncommon Women and Others.” The Pitchforks performed in Reynolds Theater; Anne Tyler and Eudora Welty spoke about their writing, and Joe Jackson performed in Page. At the end of December, the Board of Trustees de- layed decisions concerning the fate of the swimming and fencing programs and the dorm proposal, and the family of Luis Ferrer acquired a Durham attorney to in- vestigate the circumstances surrounding the fresh- man's death. Island meet, and soccer star Joe Ulrich signed a one- year contract with the New York Arrows. The Black Student Alliance commemorated Martin Luther King's birthday with a series of demonstrations and services, while Hoof 'N Horn presented the musical Working,” based on Studs Terkel’s novel, and the Psy- chedelic Furs played in Page Auditorium. Satisfaction,” a new restaurant and bar, opened in Lakewood Shopping Center and quickly became Duke's latest student-run nightspot. DUFS, in order to cover increases in food costs, announced plans to decrease breakfast and increase lunch prices, and later increased prices in the Rathskellar and Snack Bar due to a project- ed deficit caused by decreased usage of board plan operations. In an attempt to avoid abusive” behavior by some Duke fans (that's you, BOG), a buffer zone was set up in Cameron. Sorority rush, complete with the traditional controversy via Chronicle letters for and against sorori- ties and rush, lasted from the second week to the end of the month. In response to a lack of conservative activ- ism on campus, interested individuals formed Campus Young Americans for Freedom. The senior class of 1983 decided on a class gift of a permanent Major Speakers fund with a goal of $20,000, and the Conference on Career Choices was held, featuring Duke alumni in var- ious fields talking to and answering questions from in- terested students. Lastly, Duke's latest controversy came before the Residential Policy Committee: the dispute over housing space in Edens Quad between Mirecourt and Delta Tau Delta fraternity. The Delts wanted to trade places, Mire- court residents opposed. JANUARY Classes began for the Spring Semester on January 10th and students found themselves once again in line for books and Drop Add. January freshmen, numbering 239, were welcomed to Duke, most of them moving into rooms on East Campus. The University announced that the swimming and fencing teams would be retained in- definitely, and Dean Wasiolek headed a newly-formed Office of Student Affairs Task Force to investigate the death of Luis Ferrer. The men's basketball team, having won three games and lost one over break, lost four games this month — three of them to neighbors UNC, NC State, and Wake Forest — but beat Clemson and Maryland despite the loss of junior Doug McNeeley. Women's basketball kept winning, pushing their record to 9-2. The gymnastics team posted a school record 172-point score in a Rhode FEBRUARY MARCH The Residential Policy Committee made its Edens Quad decision on February 1st: thirteen spaces from Mirecourt would be given to the Delts. Mirecourt resi- dents celebrated the decision. Seniors began their all- night vigils outside the Placement Office as Job inter- views began. The basketball team won three games and lost five, ending the month 11-14. Women’s basketball won one and lost one, now 13-6 for the season. Gymnast Rona Riggs set a new Duke meet record of 36.05 points; wres- tler Jake Cecere won the ACC crown, and the women's swim team competed and finished last in the ACC tour- nament. New head football coach Steve Sloan an- nounced signing 19 top recruits, Duke Ice Hockey beat UNC to close their season at 9-5, and the baseball team lost its opening game. Symposium '83, entitled Me and Them: Narcissism in an Age of Disengagement, was held during the first weekend of the month. Jewish Awareness Week was observed; IFC sponsored a black white greek forum to stimulate interaction between black and white greek or- ganizations. The Bryan Center’s first birthday was cele- brated on Valentine's Day with jazz in the Rathskellar and a Mardi Gras festival. Playboy magazine’s recruitment of women for a Girls of the ACC” spread stirred controversy on campus and the debate raged over whether or not the Chronicle should have advertised for Playboy. Delta Kappa Epsi- lon fraternity was given permission to open a chapter on campus, while the Hideaway reopened in the basement of the Old West Union. Andre Watts performed in Page. Spring break started on March 4th, and while many students headed for South Florida to spend the week in the sun, others traveled to Washington to take part in a financial aid protest on Capitol Hill for the third annual National Student Action and Lobby Day. Back at Duke on the 14th, students counted the remaining days and decided that work on those term papers and projects should probably get under way. A Nuclear Awareness Symposium entitled Peace- making in a Nuclear Age” featured Nobel-prize-winning Professor Andrew Wald speaking against nuclear pow- er and for disarmament. Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity hosted singer Ellen Lange as part of the Residence Hall programming campaign to increase education at home.” The Blackburn Literary Festival presented singer-danc- er-historian-producer-actress-author-poet Maya Ange- lou as this year's featured artist. Mary Tyler Moore spoke candidly to a packed audience, and the English Beat performed in Page. Duke's women’s golf team was ranked 2 in the na- tion and Mary Ann Widman was ranked 1. Men’s bas- ketball ended its season with two more losses; one against Virginia in the ACC tournament was the worst recorded loss in Duke's basketball history. The baseball team split a pair of games, lacrosse beat Ohio State and lost to Virginia, and men’s tennis beat Georgia Tech, Maryland and Virginia Tech. The weather in March followed the typical Spring ’83 pattern: lots of rain. Snow fell on the 24th and the 26th Snow fell again on the 18th of April, and similar bad weather pushed this year's Springfest, complete with crafts, food, and music, into the Bryan Center. Class officer elections were held, and ASDU announced new officers for its legislative committees. Hoof 'N' Horn ended its season with the opening of Music Man, and Duke Players presented Bent, a controversial play for mature audiences only. A Humor Extravaganza Comedy Competition was sponsored by Jabberwocky and won by Steve Fogelman. PET Ice Cream filmed a commercial on East Campus and fetured the Duke Choral and Chapel Choir. The Chronicle announced the proposal of a new Peace and World Policy Studies major by senior Walter Christman, who called the major pre-reality. Voices’ last issue this year contained perspectives from seniors, and the last issue of Tobacco Road featured profiles of selected students. DUFS cut back meal plan hours for next year, and all board plan operations were threat- ened with elimination by September, 1984. Keppa Alpha fraternity was questioned about its upcoming Old South parties by individuals concerned with race relations. The end of the year came clearly into view as the Chronicle reminded us of final exams, and advertised storage space. Its last issue included 2Vfe pages of Per- sonals in the Classified section. The sun finally appeared, and the weather was beau- tiful as students hibernated in Perkins, Mudd, East Campus Library and any other quiet place for one last grind before Myrtle Beach. In the confusion of finals and packing up, some goodbyes were left unsaid, but gradu- ation did come at last, and the 1982-83 year at Duke, for many of us not just another year, came to an end. was sunny and 70°. Campus minister Robert Young de- cided to resign after ten years at Duke, While Terry Sanford led lobbyists at the North Carolina General As- sembly to raise annual subsidies to private institutions for in-state students. The Ferrer family filed suit against Duke University for gross negligence and attempting to cover up medi- cal malpractice. National officers of Phi Mu sorority came to Duke and launched a recruiting campaign. Playboy magazine came to campus seeking models and 60 Duke women showed up to be photographed. The Chronicle an- nounced the ressurection of Latent Image. Duke's pho- tography magazine, ASDU s check-cashing service opened in the Bryan Center, and the last week of the month was observed as Alcohol Awareness Week. APRIL The Chronicle's April Fool edition and Easter week- end marked the beginning of the last month of this year. Early risers made it to the gardens at 6:30 A M. for the Easter Sunrise Service on the 3rd. An Energy Sympo- sium was held on campus, beginning with a half-hour black-out attempted for conservation efforts. ASDU cut publications budgets drastically, including banning all honorariums for editors and staffs, with the exception of the Chronicle editor. NC State beat Houston in the NCAA basketball finals and claimed the title from the 82 winner, UNC. The baseball team beat Wake Forest, but was rained out for the 13th time of the season. Men's tennis won their matches against Wake Forest and NC State and were defeated by UNC; women's tennis beat Maryland. Golf- er Mary Ann Widman won the Peggy Kirk Bell Invita- tional Tournament, and freshman basketball player Bill Jackman decided to return home to Nebraska. Gymnas- tics coach Ken Miller and soccer coach John Rennie both announced the signing of top recruits for the '83- 84 year. However, faced with the reality of the ensuing changes, students began the age-old process of adjusting to new situations. After a year of adapting, most of us have accepted the fact that the new look of residential life at Duke is here to stay — but we need to ask, “is acceptance of change enough? In- deed, if we fail to evaluate change cor- rectly, we will never really understand it. During the fall semester of 1980, the administration first developed objec- tives designed to rectify certain inequi- ties it felt existed in the housing system. These objectives included equality of housing for men and women on West and East campuses, equality of non-se- lective and selective housing on both campuses, development of class unity and freshman leadership potential, and reduction of overcrowding. After months of discussing these goals, deci- sions were made which resulted in the changes implemented this year. While this year’s changes have opened up more space for women on West campus and selective men’s hous- ing on East campus, there have been other, unforeseen effects on the nature of residential life at Duke. Noise com- plaints and problems filling sections have been encountered by fraternities moved to East, a shortage of space has sparked controversy in Edens Quad, and sophomores have been placed in triples on West to fill places created by new freshman clusters. This year has not only been a time for solving practical problems, but also for posing philosophical questions. Have these changes done what they were de- signed to do? What do we, as members of the Duke community, see as the ulti- mate effects of these changes on Duke in the future? Certainly, overcrowding has not been alleviated, and few stu- dents would agree that we’ve achieved, as the administration hoped, the high- est potential for first choice of, and flexi- bility in, housing for upperclass stu- dents.” In addition, the debate over the advantages and disadvantages of the freshman cluster system continues. Freshmen lament their slim chances of living on West in their sophomore year, although most do like living together with other freshmen. Upperclass dorms just aren’t the same without fresh- men — the eternally enthusiastic, opti- mistic, naive and wide-eyed newcomers who are often (but not always) able to revel in aspects of life at Duke that up- perclassmen, due to sheer repetition, view as mundane. This lack of fresh- man-upperclassman interaction affects freshmen as well — upperclassmen can serve as big brothers or sisters, older and wiser friends, advise columnists and, occasionally, as well-deserved bad influences on a Saturday night. Admit- tedly, freshmen can possibly do all those things for each other, but without the choice of cross-sectional living they may never find out what they’ve missed — and that may be the key to the entire housing issue. Most students find that, as freshmen, they enjoy their housing experience, whether they live in all-freshman or cross-sectional dorm. This was a landmark year for housing at Duke, and when we evaluate the suc- cesses and failures of the changes, we must be careful to look not only at visi- ble student reaction, but to delve be- neath the surface as well — to find out what people really gained and lost, and to decide whether or not it was worth it. Perhaps freshmen do gain more from living with each other. On the other hand, a quick walk down the hall to find an old Chem 11 test is a hell of a lot shorter than the walk from Trent to Per- kins — especially at 2 A.M. —Lew Borofsky 71 1 73 74 75 The Bryan Center Remember standing in a seemingly endless line at the Wachovia machine while being serenaded by the sweet sounds of Chopsticks” echoing from an unseen piano, or cramming into the TV room in the afternoon to sing Hap- py Birthday” (in unison) to your favorite soap opera star? Both of these scenes are unmistakeably characteristic of only one place on campus — the Bryan Cen- ter. In its first full year of existence, the University Center has quickly found a place in the lives and routines of most members of the Duke community. Most of us have forgotten the frantic buzzing of activity and conversation of the old West Campus dope shop, as we tried to dodge a series of seemingly unavoid- able head-on collisions on the staircase and in the hallway (further complicated by the mile-long line outside of the bank), and few of us still recall the peaceful serenity of a chocolate milk- shake on East. In fact, to most of this year's freshmen dope shop probably means either a place to buy illegal drugs or purchase a person with sub-par intel- ligence! Even the Cl, once bastion of quarters players, drunken celebrations, and burgers made with a personal touch, has had trouble adjusting to the new Center's existence. In all fairness, there’s no doubt that the Bryan Center is the most important addition to this campus since the Chap- el (or at least since the New Dorms). As the new center of activity on campus, it has consolidated activities such as eat- ing, studying, watching TV, going to movies, plays or other cultural perfor- mances, shopping, sleeping or just hanging out, into one place — resulting in increased student interaction. Its re- sources enable many more activities to take place simultaneously than was ever before possible, and the Rathskel- lar has done an admirable job of creat- ing the college atmosphere” neces- sary for Duke's major campus hangout. The Center’s come a long way this year. Thus far familiarity hasn’t breeded contempt, and students are taking ad- vantage of its facilities in greater num- bers. The fact that events such as Okto- berfest and Springfest took place in or around the Center illustrates the shift of attention towards that area of campus, and improvements such as the Ride Rider and Student Activities Boards, new office space for ASDU and other student groups, and the new informa- tion desk in the Center’s lobby support this trend. Last, but certainly not least, the value of the Center as an impressive recruiting tool can’t be ignored. Of course, the Bryan Center is still in its infancy, and therefore many ques- tions remain. Will it monopolize campus happenings at the expense of places like the Cl, DU, Baldwin Auditorium, Branson Theatre and Page Auditorium? Will the Center ultimately bring mem- bers of the Duke community closer to- gether, or will it signal the continuation of an ultra-modern trend contrary to the tranquility reflected in the rest of Duke’s architecture? Only students, faculty, TV sets, pianos, video games and, most im- portantly, time will tell. —Lew Borofsky 78 79 i J 81 i 83 SOCCER With less than a minute left in Duke's 1982 NCAA semi-final soccer match, the University of Connecticut scored a goal, making the score 2-1. Nonethe- less, Duke fans were chanting “It just doesn’t matter! Our top-ranked soccer team had made winning a habit — and they were not about to break that habit yet. As the clock ticked off the final sec- onds, the familiar “We're number one” echoed across the soccer field. The win over Connecticut sent the team, which shared the ACC championship with Clemson, to the NCAA finals in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Duke's best-ever season (22-1-2) ended in Fort Lauderdale with an ex- hausting, four-hour national champion- ship game. In the eighth sudden-death overtime, the Indiana Hoosiers finally scored — breaking the 1 -1 tie and hand- ing the Blue Devils their first loss in over a year. Although stunned by the loss, everyone at Duke realized how truly successful the season was, and re- mained proud of the team's accomplish- ments. The 1982 team set Duke records for most shutouts (12), longest undefeated streak (24 games), and most wins (22) in a season. They were ranked 1 longer than any other soccer team in the na- tion, and made the NCAA playoffs for the third straight year. In addition, se- nior co-captain and defensive leader Joe Ulrich received the Hermann award as collegiate soccer’s player-of-the- year for his outstanding performances. Coach John Rennie was also recog- nized for his excellence, receiving na- tional Coach-of-the-Year honors. In fact, the entire team excelled through- out the season — especially in two wins over arch-rival Clemson, and in come- from-behind victories over UCLA and NC State. In the spring, the Blue Devils even managed to avenge their loss to Indiana, in the McDonald's soccer chal- lenge. As great as 1982 was for Duke soc- cer, the team refuses to rest on its lau- rels. With nine starters returning and more freshman players arriving, there’s every reason to look forward to 1983 as the year the soccer team could bring Duke its first national championship. —Harry Galanty 84 m 1982 Duke Soccer Coach: John Rennie Record: 22-1-2 DUKE 7 North Carolina Wesleyan 0 6 Elon 0 5 Vermont 2 2 UCLA 1 4 Appalachian State 1 2 American 0 5 UNC-Charlotte 0 1 Clemson 0 2 Loyola of Baltimore (OT) 1 1 William and Mary 0 1 Atlantic Christian 0 1 Maryland (OT) 1 4 South Carolina 0 7 Campbell 1 1 Winthrop 0 5 Wake Forest 0 2 Virginia (OT) 2 6 UNC-Wilmington 0 4 North Carolina State 3 5 North Carolina 1 2 South Florida (NCAA) 1 2 Clemson (OT) (NCAA) 1 2 George Mason (NCAA) 0 2 Connecticut (NCAA) 1 1 Indiana (8 OT) (NCAA) 2 86 88 89 i ■ v-. ■ ■+ ■ ; ' '■ • ■ '■ 5f 5 • 90 91 92 93 i .______ 94 FOOTBALL All too often in years past, Duke fans have left Wallace Wade Stadium thinking, Wait 'til bas- ketball season . .In 1982, though, the football team proved more than able to keep fans’ atten- tion riveted to the field. From an opening day, 25-24 victory over Tennessee (before a crowd of 95,000 hostile fans) to an exciting 23-17 win over arch-rival North Carolina. Coach Red Wil- son and his Blue Devils distinguished them- selves as one of the most exciting teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Led by junior quar- terback Ben Bennett and ACC Player-of-the- Year Chris Castor, Duke’s explosive offense averaged nearly 455 yards and 28 points per game. Although the team finished at 6-5 for the sec- ond year in a row, only heartbreaking losses to Navy and Virginia Tech kept Duke from an 8-3 record and a possible post-season bowl bid. For Dukies, the “Rose Bowl” took place in Wallace Wade on November 20. The North Carolina Tar Heels (who were supposedly tuning up” for post season play) proved no match for the in- spired Blue Devils, and at game’s end, we had our first win over Carolina in ten years — and the victory bell to show for it. As time ran out, bedlam broke lose on the field and in the stands, and the North goalpost became the first casual- ty. Meeting other freshmen usually led to the same questions — Where are you from?’’, and What did you make on the SAT? or How did you rank in your class?” In response to the first ques- tion, the same one or two states were repeatedly heard. For the questions pertaining to high school achievement, it seemed that everyone heard at least one claim to numbers higher than his own. These claims alone sufficed to cre- ate hints of fear and self-doubt in our hearts. Yet, once classes began we forgot SATs and other such frivolities. Having to buy fifteen books for four classes (at least five of which were never opened) sparked the first concern over work- loads. This concern was just a flickering one because, after all, we had so much time outside of class to do our studying! It took a while to realize that it was hard to accomplish anything in the short time after “your” soap opera and between study breaks. When we received the lowest grade I’ve ever made,” we dis- covered that things were not going to be as easy as they were in high school. What did we expect from classes like Freshman Composition (nobody really reads those essays, they just scribble on them and write “C + ” — the plus is supposed to give you hope), Bon- kestry” (one cannot expect it to be easy when it is named after the professor) and Calculus 31 (find your limit as the work approaches infinity)? Thinking about how easy high school was caused bouts with homesickness early in the first semester — one symp- tom of which was a rising phone bill. Fall break was the only cure — a glimpse of home before we returned to carrells in Perkins, a look at the real world with children and animals (not just quad dogs and squirrels), typical architecture rather than this pseudo-fantasy land, and real newspapers! Talking to people with whom we grew up, and who there- fore related comfortable to us already, was another enjoyable part of being home. We also found some comfort in getting away from either the Southern drawl or people who say that your ac- cent is cute. Somehow, returning to our old stomping grounds and tempo- rarily escaping the routine pressures of university life had a magically rejuvena- tive power that made the end of the se- mester bearable — despite finals. By the end of the first semester, aided by the accumulation of special memo- ries, we realized the rejuvenative power that exists at Duke as well. Remember 132 “getting psyched for an “awesome time, and what about having picnics, taking quiet walks, climbing trees or playing games in the gardens? All- nighters generated more memories — including both philosophical and silly talks with roommates and friends, fran- tic cramming, finishing (as well as start- ing) an overdue paper, playing cards, watching TV, or partying. Think about it — would you really have stayed up until four in the morning if you didn't have a good reason? Parties seemed to be of especially great importance to freshmen during the first semester. “Everyone went to parties and that was where you met people, upperclassmen in particular. In addition, parties introduced us to a new set of values. For example, drinking was viewed in a more permissive context in college than in most high schools. Of- ten, freshmen suffered through many hangovers before becoming accus- tomed to this change of attitude. Drink- ing was also more popular in college, evolving from primarily a weekend ac- tivity in high school to a somewhat con- stant, casual pastime. Some freshmen became all too familiar with the great- tasting punch — It's not very strong” — which was served at certain parties, and they discovered the effects of grain alcohol or other liquors they never enjoyed before leaving home. Yet, along with the serious party- ing, a great deal of socializing occurred at parties. During fraternity rush, for in- stance, the emphasis was on meeting freshman guys and recruiting members; during cattle drives — oops, cham- pagne mixers — the emphasis was on meeting freshman girls. At the begin- ning of the second semester, those girls who thought cattle drives had finally ended were surprised by sorority rush. Rushees shuffled from building to build- ing, room to room, and smiling sorority girl to smiling sorority girl. Conversation reverted to the monotonous and pre- dictable: What's your name? Where are you from? Where do you live? What a cute nametag! Let me introduce you to the other members! As a result, bid night became not ony a celebration of pledging the best sorority, but also of the end of rush. Fraternity and sorority activities were only a small part of the memories of spring semester. While we were trying to recover from the winter blahs, Dur- ham teased us with warmth and sun- shine only to let us down with an un- timely snowfall — but everyone gradu- ally recognized the true signs of spring. Classes began thinning out and every- where one heard talk of formals and smelled the aroma of suntan oil. After spring break, everyone swore he was going to become a serious student,” yet dorm benches filled with more and more serious sun worshippers and scopers. The buses became less crowded after a while, because stu- dents preferred to enjoy the sunshine, and even the walk from North Campus (for those who actually went there) to Gross Chem became more pleasant. By the end of the second semester, we had gained back a little self-assur- ance and were proud of having survived our first year at Duke since, unfortu- nately, not eveyone does. We were con- fident that we had developed the self- discipline often lacking earlier in the year, and felt that it would help us make it through the next three years (still pre- med? Make that seven). As we finished our last finals, abandoned hope of los- ing the freshman 10 and took off for Myrtle Beach as sophomores, we re- joiced in the knowledge that our tough- est year ever was over. After all, we thought, it can't get any tougher than this. —Bonny Hinners 133 A Sophomore's Point of View As a freshman, wise upperclassmen warned me that I would experience the infamous “sophomore slump” the fol- lowing year. Whether it was the state- ment's power of suggestion or inevita- ble accuracy, my sophomore year has indeed contained many disturbing con- frontations. The year has been a time for re-evaluating myself and my goals and integrating the results into my ideal of an intellectual woman — a phrase which issues a constant challenge to me. As a native North Carolinian, I feel very much at home here. I have always eaten barbecue and grits (although not together!) and it was not until I came to Duke that I realized “hi” was not a three-syllable word. I am still surprised, however, by the number of Duke stu- dents who comment on my accent. I’m in my home state, yet I appear to be the exception to a very Northern rule. This pleases me though, for I have the best of both worlds — a great University with a diverse student body practically in my own backyard. Despite the proximity of my family, I have found that the maturation I seek results from the mental separation rath- er than the physical one. This year has been a time to examine and clarify my values as I doggedly attempt to attain a higher level of awareness and under- standing. As a sophomore, I am expected to know what I want to do. I have declared a major, mostly due to the persistance of the people at the pre-major advising center. As a result, it appears that my life is now taking on a new dimension as I direct myself toward the fulfillment of a seemingly endless number of require- ments and pre-requisites. However, I have found that a large part of my learn- ing comes from personal interactions. Administrators mourn what they see as a lack of intellectual atmosphere, but the intellectual interaction is here if one looks carefully for it. In the past two years, I’ve spent memorable evenings with friends — talking late into the night about religion, literature, philosophy and topics close to home such as black white relations and student apathy. We never quite solve the problems of the world, but I’ve come closer to under- standing them. My feeling for this school is strong and I am still moved by the sight of the Chapel tower rising above West Camp- us. On a misty night the scene reminds me of Hamlet’s encounter with the ghost on the ramparts of Elsinore. On a clear day I imagine learned men in long robes strolling by as they relax after an extensive discussion of Plato's Repub- lic. I sometimes halt in the middle of a step, a sentence or a thought, to fully savor the realization that I AM IN COLLEGE. I am learning, I am growing, and though I am only one of many college co-eds across the nation, I am unique in my experiences and per- ceptions of them. I regard my college development as a gestation period. I am presently secure within the walls of Duke University, but I will soon be thrown into a world unwill- ing to accept my cocky, intellectual ideals. I am continually formulating new answers in response to old questions, as I strive to make the most of my Duke experience.” Whenever I ques- tion the worth of my education at Duke, I remember the words of Benjamin Dis- raeli: The more extensive one’s know- ledge of what has been done, the great- er will be the power of knowing what to do.” —Denise Spellman 134 DUKE ERSITY RANSIT 136 137 138 140 141 143 145 146 147 BASKETBALL Trying to sum up Duke's 1982-83 bas- ketball season, especially in a few sim- ple words, is not an easy task. The cam- paign began with anticipation and hope, as loyal fans looked to a highly-touted group of six freshmen to lead the team back from last year’s disappointing sea- son. Although it was understood that the new team would need time to expe- rience the intensity of college basketball and learn Coach Krzyzewski’s system, most Dukies felt that a reputable sea- son was within reach. Indeed, the first few games produced some immediate and visible results. Johnny Dawkins, easily the most excit- ing player to enroll at Duke since Gene Banks, was averaging 17 points per game, Tom Emma appeared to have re- turned to his old form after an injury- plagued junior year, and freshmen Mark Alarie, Jay Bilas and David Henderson were starting and averaging a total of 31 points per contest. When, in College Park, all the pieces came together in a great victory over Maryland, excited fans got a glimpse of the potential of our young team. Finally, it seemed, the im- provements were showing, and thoughts turned to a tough ACC sched- ule and a possible NIT berth. However, as the year continued, words like inconsistency and inexperi- ence joined those used most frequently to describe the Blue Devils. At 10-12, the team encountered the critical point of its season, but was able to win only one of its last six games. Although Duke was able to provide some excitement with a crushing victory over Georgia Tech, the season ended with a disap- pointing loss to Virginia in the ACC tour- nament. Overall, 1982-83 was a year of re- building and development for the Duke squad, and with two more quality fresh- men arriving in the fall, fans will once again fill Cameron with visions of a re- turn to the greatness of years past. For seniors Chip Engelland, Tom Emma and Mike Tissaw, the roller coaster ride of their careers at Duke is over. For the rest of the team, the message is simple: Wait till next year!” 148 —Harry Galanty 150 151 152 t54 155 156 157 158 159 160 161 162 VOLLEYBALL 165 167 168 A 169 170 171 172 173 174 175 I I 177 A I 179 Working Music Man 162 A 183 ■H 184 A Student Activities 186 187 188 190 . 191 J 193 I I I 194 195 196 197 I I 199 i 200 C y eu si UEACiUE I 201 I 203 I 204 205 206 207 209 - 210 212 -J 214 SENIOR PERSPECTIVES: Time To Get A )ob And Be Somebody . Idly glancing at her watch, she followed the flow of “Eas- ties” to the Post Office. She usually checked her box at least once after each delivery. More often than not, the only thing waiting was the phone bill. She stopped to chat with Mr. Wil- liams, took a letter from Mom from her mailbox, then wandered into the Dope Shop. Summoning a cheery greeting for Ruthie, she asked for a milkshake, and Ruthie, with a grin, plopped in extra ice cream. Snatches of conversation whirled past her as she browsed through the Aeolus, looking for “The Bag. “. . . When I looked her up in the pig book she looked okay, so I thought, go for it! So I asked her to the off-campus and .. “... but his lectures are so boring, and I figure if I just, like, read the book, then I should do okay on the mid-term.’’ “Well, I met him at a cattle drive, but he seemed pretty nice, so he asked me to sit with him at the football game and I said ...” “... And I said, Mother, I’m nineteen, for heaven’s sake, and you're acting like I’m still in High School.’ ”. With a sigh, she picked up her Norton Reader and headed toward the Chinese room to study for a couple of hours be- fore “General Hospital.” There was no Micro lecture on Fridays, so they always met for lunch — sometimes in the Pits, or, if the menu looked particularly unappetizing, down- stairs in the Dope Shop (listed in Diner’s Club with four stars). Most often it was the Pits — surrounded by a group of his friends. “We killed BOG at baseball yesterday — it was great!” . . had on this pair of really short white shorts, and man, what I wouldn't give to . ..” “. . . can’t find a single souce for this stupid paper. I mean, how many people can be writing about elections?” “Did you read this editorial in THE Chronicle? This guy must be nuts! Afterwards, he’d walk her to class. “You look tired.” “We painted the bridge last night. You’ve got to see it! I just hope some- body doesn’t paint over it. “I thought I saw a smudge .. A laugh, a playful dodge, then — Will 234 I see you this weekend?” She slammed the mailbox shut. An- other letter to add to the collection on her wall. In large quantities, rejection letters can develop a certain sick hu- mor, but individually they still suck. Fur- ther down the row a guy, obviously a senior, kicked his empty box. Smiling, she said, “Cheer up — there's always the two o'clock delivery. He laughed. She stopped at the Boyd-Pishko for a Tab, then paused at the TV room to see if she recognized any of the “Love Boat fans. She walked up behind the Chapel and out onto the steps, looking out across the quad. James B. was staring disapprovingly down toward the hackeysack players at his feet. She had just opened her Chronicle to Bloom County” when the shout came from be- hind her. Look at this! I don't believe it! Har- vard, here I come!” Letter waving, hugs, congratulations. Have you heard anything yet?” A couple of offers, but I'm waiting for two more companies before I decide. Another hug. Then Well, good luck — I’m going to call home— and he raced down the quad, barely avoiding the preppy guide leading a group of “prospectives” toward the Chapel. As they passed, she heard a woman’s voice: Oh, look! Isn't it beautiful? And looking, back, she had to agree that it was. The Class of 1983 The 1,360 freshmen who will arrive at Duke today were selected from a record applicant pool of 8,105, according to Kathleen Ciompi, an officer in the under- graduate admissions office. The 8,105 applicants represent a 15 percent increase in the total applicant pool over last year, permitting the ad- missions office to select a more quali- fied group of students. Additionally, the number of exceptionally qualified appli- cants has been increasing. The number of applicants scoring between 700 and 750 on the verbal portion of the Scho- lastic Aptitude Test (SAT) was up 32 percent over last year; the number scor- ing above 750 was up 76 percent. Because of the improvement in both the size and the quality of the applicant pool, Edward C. Lingenheld, director of undergratudate admissions, said that the class of 1983 will prove to be excep- tionally well-qualified. He credited the increase in the size of the applicant pool to the diligent work of his staff in recruit- ing prospective students, and to the greater interest in Duke among high school seniors. Lingenheld said that approximately 10 percent of the entering class will be minority students, including 95 blacks, an increase of 10 percent over last year. Lingenheld added that Duke accepted 30 percent more blacks this year than last. This year’s freshman class will be 57 percent male, 43 percent female. It will include 54 nursing students, 210 engi- neering students, and 1,095 students in Trinity College. Lingenheld said that, based on his recollection, there will be fewer pre-med students in the freshman class this year than in the past. The class of 1983 showed increased interest in the social sciences and humanaities. More freshmen entering today are from North Carolina than any other state. Still, more freshmen this year are from the Northeast or North Central re- gions than from the South. Although most students are still from the Northeast and the South, the Mid- west and Southwest have shown the greatest growth in the number of stu- dents applying to Duke. The number of applicants from Texas increased by 45 percent, and the number from Ohio was up 43 percent. In comparison, applica- tions from North Carolina were up only 11 percent; those from the Middle Atlan- tic states were up 20 percent. — The Chronicle August, 1979 Dana S. Abbott David R. The Chanticleer was published by the Un- dergraduate Publications Board of Duke University in a press run of 5500 copies, using the offset lithog- raphy process. The book was printed by the Delmar Publishing Company of Charlotte, North Carolina. Repre- sentatives to the staff were Greg Whalen and Pam Leadbetter, and the in-house consultant was Becky Alex- ander. The book was printed on War- ren’s Lustro Enamel paper in Dull fin- ish, with front endsheet blind em- bossed. Cover material was Blue record buckram, with additional em- bossing and top flat foil stamping in both silver and white. Cover de- Colophon signed by Claire Bradley (’83 Chanticleer artist-in-residence). Body copy was set in 10 pt. Helvetica Medium type, leaded 2 pts., and Headlines were set in Helvetica Medi- um and Italic, and Optima and Italic. Senior names were set in 9 pt. Opti- ma Italic, and Senior Index was set in 8 pt. Optima and Optima Bold. All col- or was reproduced from transparen- cies. Senior portraits were taken by Varden Studios of Rochester, New York. Representative to the staff was Joel Siegel, and the senior photogra- pher was Tim Daly. Over 10,000 black and white frames and 750 color slides were shot by the 1983 Chanticleer staff, from which the ap- proximately 700 shots published were selected. Black and white films used were Kodak Tri-X and Plus-X, and Ilford HP-5 and FP-4, and color films used were Kodachrome 25 and 64 and Ektachrome 200 and 400. Also used by the staff were rulers, erasers and numerous pencils (of No. 2 and 2.5 variety). Lastly, the editor wishes to thank the manufacturers and distributors of Dr. Pepper (not to mention the good Doctor himself) for helping him through one hell of a year. When I first walked into the Chanticleeroffice in November, 1980. I had never developed a negative be- fore. I had no idea what Polycon- trast” paper was or what magazine layout meant, and I had never even heard of the Undergraduate Publica- tions Board. This edition of the Chanticleer, in one sense, represents two and a half years of learning, ex- perimenting and working towards a single goal — the production of a yearbook which reflects my personal Duke experience,” the experiences of members of the yearbook staff, and the ideas and attitudes contrib- uting to the “Duke experience for our particular community. For me, Duke has almost exclu- sively meant classes and Chanticleer for the past two years. Much of my time has been spent pur- suing the interests of the Duke Uni- versity yearbook, and many of my closest friendships have arisen from these pursuits. While working on the Chanticleer, I've encountered many people who, in one way or another, have helped me to understand Duke as well as those who call it home. One of these talented individuals is Teresa Miller, without whom I never would have gained the technical skills and confidence to edit this book. Teresa's work on the 1982 Chanticleer, and with other Duke publications as well, paved the way for my efforts. In addition, well-de- served thanks go to my three assis- tant editors. An editor is only as good as those he trusts and respects, and these three ladies have helped me to do a job of which I am extremely proud. One would have to look far and wide to find people more respon- sible and perceptive than Claire Bradley, Helene Goldson, Marianne Shivanandan and the rest of the staff of the 1983 Chanticleer. Finally, I’d like to thank my “1983 Chanticleer shrinks. Lawrence McIntyre, while editing the 1982-83 Archive, was a true compatriot of mine as well. How we kept each other sane (and our publications rolling at the same time) I'll never know. Lawrence provided me with a great example of the type of friend we should all strive to be- come, and his knowledge and under- standing of publications at Duke was an asset to me in my efforts on the Chanticleer. Lastly, my sister Rose (Engineering '84) along with the rest of my family, provides the foundation upon which my life rests, and the foundation's a strong one. Their sup- port and encouragement throughout gave me the all-important drive and determination to keep working when I was besieged with photos, layouts, copy and law school applications. After all these thank-yous, the most important one must go to Duke itself — the place, the tradition, the atmosphere and the people. Without Duke, we wouldn’t need a Chanticleer, and without all of you, the task of editorship would be mun- dane as well as inconsequential. In retrospect, the Duke experience may be hard to define, but the Duke atmosphere is clearly recognizable. The Duke atmosphere encourages academic excellence — but not at the expense of personal exploration and development. To me, the 1983 Chanticleer shows that Duke is a place where personal exploration and enhancement may take place in- side of the classroom or out, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-in and year-out. This idea — that a yearbook serves to crystallize in each of us the memories of our indi- vidual searches for ourselves — is the underlying goal to which my staff and I dedicated our efforts. Indeed, if students want to remember what they did, why and when they did it, and what they learned, they will usu- ally reach for the Chanticleer to re- mind them. In other words, the Chanticleer is an institution meant to endure. How long it endures is, in ef- fect, dependent upon student co-op- eration and concern. Duke's year- book is for you — if you are willing to be for it. This year, we put together a book with more color, more faces and more action than ever before — but if the 1983 Chanticleer doesn't encour- age or even force you to interact with it, then we have not been totally suc- cessful. I ask that you think about what you've seen on the preceding pages. Whether Duke means every- thing, nothing, something or anything else to you, it's been a part of your life. For some, all that's left now are memories — for others, graduation still seems oh-so far away. Either way, every day and night each of you has spent here has added something to Duke as a whole. That’s what this yearbook seeks to illustrate — Duke is a beautiful place, but we make it live through our interaction with it. The 1983 Chanticleer itself is only a book — I hope you take the time to let it come alive, just as you breathe life into Duke with your presence. uJ Lew Borofsky August, 1983 303 v- 30.4 jg -• ■. : :,v
