This was going to be a tricky one. Deftly side-stepping my defender, I leapt into the air, spinning 180 degrees, and reaching over my shoulder . . . 'Shit! I spilled my beer!' Ah, yes: Old Milwaukee. That sweet elixir of freedom. With a head of foam like the clouds of Olympus and the effervescence of a mom in spring. Not for me your choicest hops, your purest distilled waters. For you, instead, a tragic end upon the lawn of the Gardens. What a waste. 'I spilled my beer.' 'So it goes.' 'Cood thing I brought a six.' Having had enough excitement for a while, we withdrew to the edge of the field, from whence we might observe the activity and discuss the finer points of Frisbee as a spectator sport. And scope females. Maybe we were just dumb frosh, but we knew that ldoing it' in the Gardens didn't refer to Fnsbee. 'Look at those two over there.' 'Suck face much, buddyi? 'Shh. He'll hear you.' You'd think he'd be content to undress her with his eyes.' 'I'd undress her with any part of my body she requested.' 'She's just a frosh, too. Ever notice how all the tough freshman women go for upperclassmen?' lLife's a bitch.' 'Oh, well.' 'So it goes.' Actually, being a freshman wasn't so bad. I mean, they said this would be the roughest semester at college, but it could've been worse. One of the first things I'd learned was that blow-off time was as important for survival as nerd time. So, more often than not, Friday afternoons were spent at the Gardens, tossin' the 'bee and quaffing brews. It was a great way to relax and forget about the latest Bonk quiz. And scope females. Hey, there go a couple of cute ones.' iYeah, I think the blonde is in my math class.' 'Pardon me, Miss, but how do you feel about recreational sex? 'Shh. She'll hear you.' 'You know what your problem is? You're not willing to take any risks. If you want it, you've gotta go for it.' There's no hurry. I'm just a stupid frosh now, but once I'm a sophomore, I'll be ready. Everybody knows that upperclassmen get all the glory. And all the women. Well, I'll be an upperclassman someday. Until then, I'm content to watch the Frisbees whirl by and worship them from afar. After all, four years is a long time. 'SmiIe.' The best I could manage was a grimace. Then, just a click and the moment was captured forever on Kodak film. My mother would love this shot: me in my Easter Sunday best, squinting into the early afternoon sun, with the flowers and goldfish pond as a backdrop. Hope the top of my head didn't get chopped off. Now I'll do you.' She struck a pose in front of a dogwood tree while I examined her through the viewfinder. My 'hometown'; at least, that was what I told the guys in the dorm when I invited her to Duke for our spring formal. Actually, she was just a friend, and not a very good one. So why had I asked her down? Well, this was the semester I just had to go to the formal. There wasn't any Duke girl I felt safe asking, so here I was with a total stranger, practically. Pretty sad commentary, when you think about it. Two years at Duke and I'd never even gone out with a Duke girl. 'Say cheese.' Things had gone rather smoothly the night before. We had a good meal, then arrived at the dance fashionably Iate. She didn't much care for the Seagram's I'd brought tl'm not too crazy about the stuff eitherI, but seemed content to sip 7-up; I had enough sense not to get drunk myself. The only real crisis of the evening came when we tried to dance. I'd had a couple of lessons with a friend of my sister's, so I wasn't a total kIutz, but for some reason practicing with a girl who was five-foot-eight didn't help much when my date was only five-two. So, after a few Iess-than-successful forays into the field of shagging, we decided to stick with the safer, non-contact stuff tyea, yea, yea. Twist and shoutJ and, of course, slow dancing. Anybody can slow dance. 'Now one in front of the pond.' SIow dancing is dangerous stuff, though. It's real easy to fall in Iove when you're slow dancing, even with a total stranger. Maybe it was just the Seagram's, but as we stood there in the darkness, swaying to the music, my mind was racing. I wondered if she was feeling the same things I did, but I didn't dare ask. The evening passed all too quickly. When we said good night, she didn't even give me a chance to kiss her. But her mind was racing too, and I could sense it. 'Watch the birdie.' We had gotten up early to attend the Easter service in the Chapel, then came for a walk in the Gardens. It was real mob scene, what with the regular Easter crowd and a wedding in the gazebo. But the flowers were singing, the birds were in bloom, I was in love, and my best girl was at my side. After the photo session, we stretched out in the grass. 'Glad you could make it for the formaI.' II had a real good time last night. Sorry if I seemed distracted.' 'Distracted?' 'Yea. I guess I was thinking about this guy I've been dating at school. We're starting to get kind of serious now, and . . . Boy, your phone call sure came as a surprise.' 'Yea, I'll bet.' 'Anyway, it was real sweet of you to invite me.' II only did it because you're so short, and I felt sorry for you.' That's what I should've said, but I didn't. Instead, we sat and enjoyed the sunshine for a while longer and then she hit the road. I haven't seen her since. 223 My junior year? I still have trouble discussing it without becoming melodramatic. Try this: a February dawn; four inches of new snow blanket; the Gardens; no one in sight. Voice over: 'Now is the winter of our discontent.' Obviously, not quite what I had had in mind. On to better things . . . A walk in the Gardens had been her idea. After all, we were going to graduate in a couple of weeks; this might be our last Chance to see the place. Twilight was falling, but it was as warm as it had been all spring. This was my first time in the Gardens in over a year. II love this time of day,' she said. 'Everything takes on a gray-green tint, you could cut the atmos- phere with a knife.' Or a Frisbee. We strolled among the flowers, towards the gazebo. 'You know,' she said, 'these flowers don't grow from seeds. I saw some guys down here one day, sticking them in the ground, already full-grown.' 'Really?' 'Yeah, even the occasional wrong-colored ones. It's all calculated spontaneity.' 'That's terrible. It's sort of like hearing the Chapel was pre-fab.' We walked on past the front gate and around the back way through the 'informal' areas. 'Want to see my favorite spot in the Gardens? I nodded. Shortly, down near the goldfish pond, she stooped beneath a rhododendron and pointed to the little creek flowing there. I had always known it was there, but had never taken the time to really appreciate it. The stream trickled slowly over a moss-covered log; among the rocks, a few brown leaves floated on the clear water; the banks were lined with undergrowth which hung over the creek, sheltering from view. Suddenly, Duke and Durham seemed to recede into the distance. We were far away and all alone. I didn't know where exactly, but it looked for all the world like a scene from the Blue Ridge. And it was the only spot in the Gardens that didn't look man-made. 'It's beautiful.' There were other things I wanted to say, but I kept silent. 'Let's look for four leaf clovers,' she said. So there we were, crawling around in the grass like a couple of J-frosh. I've never found a four leaf clover in my life, and I didn't expect to start then. I gave up after a bit, sat back and stared off into space. A few minutes more, and she did the same. There we sat. There aren't many people I'm comfortable doing nothing with, but this was one of them. iWe'd better head on,' she said. 'You've got to finish that project.' 'It'll wait.' But we both knew it wouldn't. We left the Gardens and started up towards West e for my last time as a Dukie. As we walked, visions from what was already the past reminded me of how, in four years, I had changed.
