This is the Fifth Decade Program. Statistics and figures are overwhelming; artists ' conceptions seem unreal and strange. It is unlikely that many of us will be here at the end of the fifth decade to view the final results and witness the inevitable inception of the Sixth Decade. Yet as we are here now, we are witnesses of growth in visible process; sounds of machinery and electric tools disturb an afternoon calm; the pit behind the library, the rising structure of pre-fab Gothic behind Wannamaker, the purchase of land along Myrtle (Campus) Drive remind us that Duke is not stagnant, but is responding to the needs of the community, the South, the nation. 13
