Afternoon hours for bicycle rides . . . exhilaration, exercise, fresh air . . . convertible rides to Buggs Island for careless hours of ivater-skiing. Two to five, a time for the fastidious . . . car-washing, trips to the laiindermat, washing and ironing . . . the well-groomed sitting in a barber ' s chair, or at the beauty shoppe . . . The afternoon, ivhen football games are played in the rain, when snowball fights are fought in the snow, when couples grace the tennis courts for mixed singles and doubles, when the Betas play lo-lai, when social committees decorate for Sat- urday night blowouts . . . The Chimes- Duke ' s dinner gong . . . might as well stop whatever you ' re doing . . . can ' t stop the music . . . long queues of Chronicle readers in the Union, meal tickets ripping along the dotted line . . . another glorious sunset. Don ' t look at me like that! Afternoons filled with studious endeavors and study breaks from 1:00 to 6:00. 22

The Devil ' s Den, againr Just a moment miss, I ' ll get you a Kleenex. EVENING . . . and now what to do? . . . what to do? Sta- tistics show that during the week most undergrads study — at least for an hour or so . . . the problem is, where? The chapter room IS a losing cause . . . lib is packed and stuffy . . . some try classrooms, others go to East for what are loosely termed study dates in the dorm parlors or fishbowls. And there are always those who prefer the quiet confines of their own room . . . pencils, legal pads, cigarettes, coffee, and other stimulants surround the seeker after truth or a diploma or a 2.0 as he bangs out papers, reports, assignments. The Dope Shop, vending machines, chowmen, Fofs, Tops, the Owl for some suds — anything to relieve the pressure. Worn out typewriter ribbons, noisy roommates and neighbors, stereos with sleepy music, the frustrations of the student. Everything falls due the same week . . . cramming, jamming, writing, researching, wondering, panicking . . . Damn, wish they sold No-Doz ot the Dope Shop . . . will it ever end? No one studies all the time . . . evenings are packed with temptations to lure many away from the books. Intramurals — sneakers and gym odors, hard play, enthusiasm . . . and basketball games that canH be missed. Meetings . . . dis- cussions, plannings, committees, friends, controversies, un- And into the night . 24
