DR. PAUL MAGNUS GROSS, Vice- President in the Division of Education and Dean of the University, has brought national and international fame to Duke during a lifetime devoted to building a sound educational program here. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the College of the City of New York (191 6), Dr. Gross received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia Uni- versity. Duke was yet unborn when Dr. Gross came to Trinity College as an assistant professor of chem- istry. He became a professor of chemistry and head of the department in 1921 and was elected Vice-President in 1949. During World War II Dr. Gross was Director of War Research at Duke. Subsequently, he was awarded the President ' s Medal for Merit for An invaluable contribution to the war effort of the United States in World War II. In 1949, Dr. Gross became President of the Oak Ridge Insti- tute of Nuclear studies. The same year he was a delegate to the General UNESCO Conference in Paris. He was appointed to the Committee on Science of UNESCO in 1952. Dr. Gross has combined successfully an edu- cational career with one of service to community and country. The University has benefited from his great name, but infinitely more important, from his brilliant mind and broad perspective. In deepest gratitude for these and other un- counted contributions to the University, the stu- dent body of nineteen hundred and fifty-eight dedicates its Chanticleer to Dr. Paul M. Gross.
