Foreword Herein we present the thirty- first volume of Duke University ' s Chanticleer. It is a war-time olume, and the finished product, therefore, is quite different from the original plans made last September. Yet, we hope that you will find in this book a portion of that spirit which is Duke and vhich makes us lo ' e our University. The staff has enjoyed putting this yearbook together for you, and if we have succeeded in representing the fine character of our Uni ersity, then we will have accomplished the purpose for ' hich we have worked this year.
